Burmi Says He Will Return to NHL Next Summer

Recommended Posts

Just this tweeted out.  Havent seen if he specifically mentioned the Jets though.

There was a thought that he would have returned this season but his KHL deal did not have an NHL out clause and the Jets obviously didnt feel it was worth buying it out.

I believe the Jets retain his rights when he returns.  Ill be somewhat excited about this come next year.  I havent seen much in the way of commentary on his play in the K and my concern would be whether he is developing in a positive way or not.  He really lost out by how Atlanta developed him and he seemed to have an attitude issue about the way Noel was using him too.  He can be a dynamic player and would be a very good 3rd line player with 2nd line potential, plus he plays Centre or Wing.

On the flip side, he might be good trade bait too.  Capitals anyone?

The Jets have his NHL playing rights for one more season, whenever that season happens to be.

Burmistrov is an oddity.  He has the ability to be the Jets best defensive forward, I guess 2nd best now that Frolik is here, but dipsydoodles east west in the neutral zone and creates all sorts of defensive problems doing so.  He has pretty good offensive skills but can't seem to score.  For every positive there seems to be an equal negative in the same category, which doesn't really make sense.

Most of the problems seem to be between his ears, so if 2 seasons in Russia helps him grow up, then he could be a solid addition to this team.  Next year.  I can't see him projecting into the top 2 lines though.

After all of the time Maurice spent coaching in Russia, I would be very curious to see what Burmi can do while on his team.

As for whether or not be would fit into the roster, I'd say we still need all the help we can get.

I don't see a spot for him on the team, probably will be  trade bait, not by himself but as a package. Jets tried dealing him for a while apparently and no takers so you aint gonna get much for the guy but as an add on to a kane trade or a enstrom trade, who knows.

I'd love to see Burmi come back next season. The guy can play center and wing so I think any creative coach (not Noel) would be able to find a place for him. One of the Jets major problems is a steep drop off in bottom 6 talent. It'd be nice if Burmi could slot in on the third line with something like Klingberg/O'Dell/Lowry on the wings. A third line that could score and provide some tough defensive minutes would go a long way toward improving the home team.

Perreault is signed for 3 years and will be the number 3 centre for sure, Unless burmi is willing to come back and play the wing on the third line, i don't see the fit for him any more.

Lowry?Odell? Klingberg? As a third line? YUck

??, Perreault, Burmi though might put up some points.. more than the lowry, odell, klingberg line would.

Perrault and Burmistrov on the third line would be a good 2/3rds. I don't think that Klingberg/Lowry/O'Dell would be a proper third line, but sub one of those guys out in place of Burmistrov and I don't mind that. Certainly better than what we saw last season.

I like any of those guys on the third line a whole lot more than someone like Thorburn or any of the other bottom line guys that they have now. At some point the Jets have to give their AHL guys a meaningful look with the big club to see what they actually have in their system .

Too bad.

Burmi was a creative player who could do magic with the puck.

Sometimes, you have to give a player like that a little more leeway, but that wasn't going to happen under Noel.

And now we're down to letting him go, more or less, to another team, for what we can get.

You can't just try to fit these round players into square holes.

Maybe Burni never adapts to the NHL, but I'd hate to see him do it…with another team.
