Jets Lineup?

Yes, I know its ridiculously early... but

Kane-Scheif-Wheeler

Buff-Little-Ladd

Lowry-Petan-Frolik

ODell-Perrault-Galiardi

Trouba-Stuart

Enstrom-Bogo

Morrisey-Pardy

All of a sudden we might actually have depth at Centre

Maybe over-achieving for Morrisey and Petan... maybe not

I don't think Petan and Morrisey make it.

Kane-Scheif-Wheeler

Buff-Little-Ladd

Lowry-Perrault-Frolik

Galiardi-Slater-Thorburn

Enstrom - Bogosian

Stuart - Trouba

Clitsome / Pardy / Ellerby / Postma

Problem with those bottom 4 is only Postma shoots right.   But they will likely try to keep those 8 for depth.

Ladd is a Left (though I thought Buff played better as a LW last season than a RW).

Kane - Schef - Wheeler

Ladd - Little - Buff

Lowry - Perrault - Frolik

Galiardi - Slater - Thorburn (Peluso)

Enstrom - Bogo

Stuart - Trouba

Morrissey - Clitty

I think they really want Morrissey to make it and he sure looks like he could.  Maurice said last night that they want to keep Petan at centre.  They had been trying both him and Lowry out as wingers/centres.  Lowry will make the team on the LW I think and give them depth at centre.  They just dont have a spot for Petan this season and I dont think it serves him to be playing 4th line minutes.  Great problem to have though.

Maurice described Ehlers as having "flashes" which he certainly does, but he'll go back to junior.

Anyone think that Trouba/Scheif might have sophomore slumps?

It is definitely possible.  And if they do, then the Jets will struggle mightily this year.  They've both worked themselves into pretty prominent roles in the lineup.  I'm hoping Maurice's influence on the team last year and during the off season offset any chance at the dreaded sophomore slump.

Agreed.  They don't look ready yet.

Hard to guess at the third and fourth line until they test them out in games to see what kind of chemistry exists, but I think they'll look at:

Galiardi-Perreault-Byfuglien as their third as the offensive upside of Galiardi is higher than Thorburn and Hallischuk, with

Halischuk-Slater-Thorburn as the starting point for their 4th line, with Peluso drawing in some nights for Halischuk.  Or vice versa if Peluso does enough things with the puck during pre-season that Maurice thinks he can be a full time player and not just a meatsack.

Lowry starts the year off in St Johns but draws back in towards the new year once the injury situation demands it.  He plays well enough that he doesn't get sent back down.

I agree with this, although that 6th D spot is pretty wide open. There are 4-5 guys who could legitimately win that job and I'm not sure it will be Morissey who gets it.

I would be more worried about the fact that Maurice is pretty much the definition of an average at best coach and that the better performance last year was simply new coach syndrome.

His record is definitely nothing to write home about, just above .500, has missed the playoffs more then he has made them.

Just like the attitude he has brought in compared to what the Jets have had with Noel.   You can see the difference in the press conferences and the way he runs camp.   The experience he has coaching though is what I think this team needs compared to Noel.

No doubt the Jets are still very tough to make the playoffs this year, and id I were a betting man, I would bet against it.  However, hoping that with the younger talent he has here, he can replicate some of his earlier successes in Carolina.

You're not being negative enough. You can do better.

you going to argue the points I bring up or just try and snipe at me again?

I think Maurice is a better coach than you give him credit for. He certainly seems to have the belief and support of his players. We'll see how these new systems work out.

and since he hurricanes got to the finals he hasn't accomplished much, that was a long time ago. You can be hopeful that he simply had a bad run, but you also have to admit that he's not a slam dunk either. The Jets are basically relying on Scheifele being a #1 defenceman and Trouba being a top pairing defenseman, that is asking a lot of players so young. If they can handle it then the team should be fine if they can't...

Scheifele being a #1 defenceman?

Isn't that more on the GM than the coach?

I doubt there is a huge expectation placed on either of those players this year.  They are being given important roles because so far they have shown they can handle it.  It is part of the growth process, not yoking them under the expectation of them carrying us to the playoffs.  Scheiffle is on the line he's on because they hope this trio can become great over time, not because there is an expectation that he has to be our best centerman this season.  Trouba will someday be a top pairing defenceman for us, but if he's partnered up with Stuart, quite clearly they are not trying to do that this year.  No one partnered with Stuart will ever be considered a top pairing.

I think Maurice is a better coach than you give him credit for. He certainly seems to have the belief and support of his players. We'll see how these new systems work out.

In his first 3 months he made very few changes to the systems the Jets were using.  Mostly on the penalty kill, some on the power play.  Frankly those were the most important changes to make anyways, as the Jets struggled to be effective under Perry Pearn's dreadful systems.  Most of the difference in Maurice and Noel came from Maurice holding the players accountable, whereas Noel seemed to expect that as professionals they would act like professionals.  That assumption was incorrect, and it cost him his job.

It sounds like more changes to the Jets "systems" are coming this year.  That word gets thrown around a lot but doesn't always mean as much as people want it to - there are very few scripted plays in hockey.  It's beauty as a sport is that almost everything that happens on the ice is improvisation at high speed.  In hockey the systems aren't really x's and o's so much as a unified understanding of how the team wants to react in specific circumstances.  You can have a one man forecheck, two to create pressure, keep guys high at the blueline, that's easy enough to get players on board with that, but the stuff in your own end gets far more loose as you don't have control over what happens when you don't have the puck. You are trying to do things to influence the opposition's actions and regain control without surrendering a scoring chance.

They're not just doing an evaluation of these players, they are also trying to measure progression.  How quickly can they adapt to playing at this level, how far do they have left to go, can they get there this year?  Do they look more fatigued today than in their last game, similar, or have they bounced back with greater energy?

Even if they already know Ehlers isn't making the Jets this year, that wouldn't be the end of the information they hope to learn about him over the next few weeks.

They really want to see Ehlers and Lowry perform.  In Lowry's case, it makes sense.  I didnt think Ehlers showed enough to take a look at him on the top line.  But should be a lot of fun to watch.

Ehler's was clearly drafted for his offense. It makes little sense to play him with bottom of the roster muckers.

Why put Petan on the fourth line then...

Looks like a 3rd line to me. Slater & Thorburn are clearly 4th liners.
