Back Up QB
The Classic and 16 others reacted to Bud Ross for a topic
My name is Bud Ross and I'm Alex Ross' grandfather. The competition for the QB backup slot at training camp will be intense. Here's a brief introduction of Alex with some history: As a freshman at Alpharetta High school, Alpharetta, Ga., he led the freshman team to an undefeated season. Coaching changes at Alpharetta, prompted him to transfer To Buford High School, Buford, Ga. Because of transfer rules, he couldn’t play varsity until his junior year. He led Buford to Georgia State championships his junior and senior years. He virtually owns the record book at Coastal Carolina University. He thinks, lives, and breathes football. Happy to be on board, Bud Ross17 points -

His petulant retaliatory behaviour on Twitter the last two days is actually sickening. There's no defending or justifying what he's done. You're done with football...? That's fine. But show some goddamned class and be a ******* man about it. What kind of self-respecting professional athlete bails on the one team who gave you the opportunity to continue your CFL career, greedily keep money you absolutely don't deserve, and then proceed to take childish digs at that very team...? What a pathetic, disgraceful, *****-made piece of ****.14 points -
These are different circumstances tho...Teams punting a guy when a post season bonus is due is for the year coming up, so technically nothing has been earned by his play and if a team wants to go in a different direction and use costs elsewhee..then so be it..It is plainly laid out for you in your contract and the chance that you can be released prior to is no hidden trick. When players choose to structure things this way, then that's the risk they take. From experience in negotiations and knowing how this works, and based on guys I know...the smart guys set up their bonuses in season...post TC...game 6 and after the guarantee day for vets (for vets who meet this criteria) I have never heard of a team axing a guy due a in season bonus payment...and if your earning it...why would they?? Durant tho...got a bonus for signing a contract witht he intent to be at camp and part of the team....but opted to say screw it and not show...take the money and run and most likely had no intentions of probably even coming...and now is using the body not responding excuse,,,and I had a kid...blah..blah..blah...join the club putz...so totally different circumstance and just plain pathetic. If anything hopefully the CFL can rescind the cap hit...the 70k aint gonna hurt the team and if it makes him feel better at night...then good riddance6 points

Who else wants to beat Vegas in 4 just to shut them and their fans and the media up?5 points -
Manziel and Kaerpernick are entirely different cats. Manziel has shown some very troubling personal conduct issues, whereas Kaepernick took a principled stand against systemic violence perpetrated against minorities that have been around even prior to the birth of America. Whether Kaerpernick wants to come to the CFL, or if he can adapt to the Canadian game are still to be determined. So far as I know, he has no desire to come to the CFL, but he was a damned good quarterback.4 points

It’s one thing to retire and do it in the fashion he did but to publically denigrate the organization that gave him an opportunity to extend his playing career and, by all accounts, supported him as he mulled over retirement options with his family .. that’s just something else. What a piece of work. I’m not one to believe in any ‘sinister plan’ but the way he’s carrying himself right now really does make a person think that he never intended to honor his contract and all he was in this for was the quick pay day.4 points -

I disagree. The Jets played defensively and controlled the game. The forecheck was successful, all the quality chances were the Jets, and the GKs couldn't get any pressure. It was pretty dominant.3 points -
The signing bonus is put in to protect players from being brought into training camp as competition or a camp arm only. It is a commitment from the club to the player that we want you on the team and here is salary up front to prove that. Players complaining about being cut prior to being paid a bonus should ask if they prefer no bonus and get cut later in the season with no chance to sign with another team. The only way around that is guaranteed contracts. Don't like what Durant did here and don't like how he is handling this on Twitter now. Really makes me wonder if this wasn't his plan all along.3 points

Pre bonus cutting is just the same as cutting pre-camp...it's just done before the money is due to save costs on a player not in teams plans....and most times it goes right to the day before the bonus is due as teams are trying to move the player elsewhere first....and at times look to them to restructure it prior to the trade, or agree to it as part of the trade...and player refuses...and in the end ends up with nothing...trust me...seen that scenario happen multiple times2 points

I don’t think it’s too ridiculous to expect that a signing bonus be returned if a player can’t even be bothered to ever report to the team. that being said, rules are rules and this will be a major sticking point come next fall when the PA will no doubt not be thrilled with the fallout this caused. Durant may have helped himself but he just effed many others.2 points
-
Players get cut all the time before their bonuses are due. BUT that's before they play the game or deliver their service. They have not put their bodies in harms way or performed for the team. No pay but no work. Collecting your bonus, then retiring means you collected for a service you didn't provide. Durant was prepaid for a service, like a deposit, and didn't deliver. If the team had cut him, I have no problems him keeping the money but that's not what happened.2 points

Revealing interview. Not from Durant of course, Pederson didnt lay a glove on him, getting at the truth wasnt the purpose of the interview, but how Durant used a Rider PR and media tool to get his spin out. If you didnt know or realize what Pederson actually is and what he represents in relation to CFL "journalism" you do now. As for Durant... when reporters virtue signal with "heartless" managment decisions I want Durant cited as a counter balance. It'll never happen I know.2 points

Manziel is now even more likely to sign in the cfl which might shake a qb lose from Hamilton. https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/tamu-football/report-new-england-patriots-no-longer-considering-signing-johnny-manziel/1 point -
Durant chose fatherhood over football. Fine. It was probably time. Then, where a scenario presented itself for a great teaching moment for the future, father Durant fumbles the ball. Big time. Is this how you teach morals to your first born? Doubles double reneged on a deal, a promise, and with that poor thought process, traded his honour in a cowardly, non-grown up way...he avoided the situation. It was easier that way. Respect and honour are not easily won, but they sure are quickly lost. And lost them he did. That, is what Durant ‘deserves’.1 point
-
Yeah I see that now, you are right, but I'd still make a case to the league to be forgiven that 70K against the cap. Bombers will make a profit this year like last, so the amount of the loss is not the biggest issue, the fact that it counts against the cap is the issue. If they could get that forgiven, then they would be in better shape to use that money later in the year. Talking about offseason rule changes next year, they should write in a rule that signing bonus money does not count against the cap if the player retires before the regular season starts. Overall, I think that would only help all the teams in the league in situations such as this.1 point
