I don’t see any reason to even play Nichols. A lot of decisions have to be made in other areas and you can only bring so many players to evaluate. Nichols can be there to advise and chart, but I doubt MOS sees it the same way. Play Nichols behind the 2nd string OL? Not a good idea.

  8. You're missing the point I was making.... failure in that they haven't given the other QB's more playing time when they've had the chance. There were lots of games last year where the game was totally in hand, where they could have thrown in Davis to get him some seasoning, but they'd keep rolling out Nichols right to the bitter end. That doesn't help development. By no means was last year a failure at all... I'm talking about one facet, sorry you misunderstood what I was saying...

  9. Yeah both years in the playoffs have arguably been the best we've seen from Nichols, conversely was among the worst we've seen from the D.

Another outstanding ad libber was Tracy Ham. As far as adjusting I think Manziel will. Playing at Texas Tech & then with the Browns he should be able to pick up the little nuances to be successful. Other qbs have done it so the reasonable expectation is that he will as well. The only thing that will stand in the way will be Manziel himself. The amount of video/study time he puts in to learn. It's all up to him as he'll be given the chance & the time. Unlike others who were buried by their own teams behind two front runners.

  13. Ya but they don't necessarily play the same spot on kick coverage. More likely knock a Conteh, Renaud or Morgan off the roster.

  14. That's kind of the way it looks if everyone stays healthy. Demski is basically in the spot Flanders finished last season in. With either LaFrance or Augustine or both plus Demski we're pretty solid for backups on the game roster. The way the NI receivers are going there's lots of options. I'm hoping we're able to keep all of the rookies (Simonise, Wolitarsky, Petermann) for awhile. Petermann especially looked like a killer on special teams. I'd be scared to put any of them on the practice roster. Flanders might prefer to see if he can catch on somewhere else in that scenario. He'd have to agree to go on 1 game injured if he's not injured, same with practice roster. Could see Calgary being interested, plus there's always teams with injuries.

Doug Flutie was a pretty good ad libber as was Tom Clements. The difference between them & the other guys at qb was the fact they could see the whole field & both were very smart players. They both made things happen.

  17. WEEK 8 vs Hamilton. Bombers 39 Hamilton 12. No stats for backup QB. Banjo Bowl Bombers 48 Riders 28. No stats for backup QB WEEK 14 vs Ottawa. Bombers 29 Ottawa 9. Davis gets 3 reps, probably on the last drive of the game, even though the Bombers were up 22-3 going into the 4th. WEEK 17 vs BC. Bombers 26 BC 20. Nichols throws for 176 yds and 0 TDs and looked awful. No backup time. WEEK 19 vs BC. Nichols gets injured and our QBs combined have thrown a handful of passes, and subsequently look awful. All I'm saying is, get the backups some time when you have the opportunity. There are 4 scenarios listed above where they could have confidently put in a backup because the game was in hand... but didn't. So do they have these opportunities often, maybe not... but when they do, take advantage of them.

  18. Maybe, but the number 2 QB spot should not, and I hope will not be handed to Ross on a silver platter. Just cuz he has 1 year in the league already does not mean the job should be his or be the prohibitive favorite. Solid blocking up front or no, Streveler sure didn't seem to let the moment get to him.

  19. Bowman could have a huge year in this offense. He really can find the holes in the zone, and use that big body to shield DB's. Throwing the ole Lapo hooks, and slants to this guy will produce way more first downs, than last year.

  23. Agreed, I wasn't berating Hellebuyck for the less than .900, he faced far more high danger scoring chances, and there weren't too many soft goals. But Fleury's .940 or whatever it was against the Jets was a significant difference in the series.

You could hardly classify Ham, Clements & Flutie as pocket passers. They scrambled & moved the pocket. They used their legs to extend plays allowing their receivers to create separation. Most great CFL qbs were ad libbers.

  26. It appears it may have been when Austin Apodaca was recruited by Washington State out of high school where he was listed at 6'1 & 175 lbs... Apologize for getting Apodaca's height & weight wrong. I know I read that stat but it obviously is wrong. So then, you have to look at the qb situation here last year & why Apodaca didn't stick. The Bombers had committed to LeFevour & Davis. Unless something tectonic happened he was never going to stick with the Bombers. It just comes down to team politics. Apodaca never would have been given the chance to succeed. The Head Coach & OC pencilled in Davis & LeFevour to be their guys. Now all 3 of them are gone. It is what it is.

I think Nichols plays one series at least and then the others get some reps. They already have seen Bennett so it's possible that Ross and Future-Brady get half the reps.

Hell, I'd cut the QB's to 3 as they did last year, save some bucks and cut the dead weight now, use the P.R. spots for players who realistically have a chance to progress and contribute in the future, not wasted on pretend stories.

I agree. Especially since our week one opponent is Edmonton. Reilly literally attempting 6 passes and then has 2 weeks off before the season. We might as well let Nichols shake off the rust in the regular season just like our week 1 opponent.

  31. Has anyone doubted him? Does Flanders have a chance of making this team? I am thinking the possibilities are remote, just because of his passport. With Augustine and LaFrance around, we have good Canadian depth at RB now. Not sure there is room for an import RB. But maybe I'm wrong.

People need to stop thinking of wind or solar like they do the big power plants. They are smaller scale and should be seen as such. You won't build a wind farm and power entire provinces, but you can build some and generate some power so that you lessen the burden on other sources of energy.

  38. Hellebucyk faced for more situations where he was one on one with a shooter. Fleury usually had support in front of him; when he didn't, the Jets scored most of the time. That's part of the < .900 SP%

  46. even 4 opportunities on an 18 game schedule is substantial. I'm not going to go back to previous season any further, but if I did, I guarantee in 2016 & 2015, you'd see similar results, even when we're losing games. O'Shea has proven to be very stubborn about deviating from using his starting QB regardless of the score. It's no secret that I don't think Nichols is the stellar QB a lot of Bomber fans seem to think he is, and that's simply my opinion. I'd love for him to put up 40 TD's and 5000 yds this season and prove me wrong!

  48. To be honest, I find the continual Manziel Watch from TSN pretty disappointing. Like, I get that having him come up here is worthy of headlines. But the constant update of every tiny detail of his practices or games rubs me the wrong way. Makes it seem like the CFL and its fans are desperate. The CFL was good before Manziel and it'll be good after he's gone. We have got to stop treating these ex-NFLers as royalty, in my opinion. Still waiting for Vince Young to win his first MOP award...
