    Edmonton @ BC Lions

GAME DAY NOTES CFL.ca Eskimos vs Lions: BC has dropped their last four meetings with Edmonton who won both visits to B.C. Place Stadium last year. BC's last win at home over the Esks came on Oct 22/16 with Jonathon Jennings at QB. - BC consecutive reception streaks: Emmanuel Arceneaux 108 straight games (of 109 career GP - held without a catch only on Nov 6/09); Bryan Burnham 53 games (all 53 of his career CFL games). - Travis Lulay: Lulay will be making his 4th straight start and he comes in averaging 311 passing yards per game. Since the start of 2017, the Lions are 4-3 when Lulay starts and 5-12 with Jonathon Jennings at QB. Lulay is #1 in the CFL having thrown just two INTs in 112 attempts. TD:INT Ratio - 2015-17: 1.26 to 1 (24:19); 2018: 2.00 to 1. Travis needs just 210 passing yards to become the CFL's 35th player to reach 20,000. - Manny Arceneaux 8,002: Became the third Lions' receiver to go over 8,000 career yards last week. He trails only Geroy Simon (14,756) and Jim Young (9,248) as the #3 receiving yardage leader in club history. In CFL history, he now ranks #45 all-time. - 2-4 Start: BC is trying to avoid dropping to 2-5 for the first time since 2011, and to be three full games out of 3rd place in the West. After 7 games last year, BC had started off 5-2 and since then have gone just 4-13 .235 ahead of only Montreal (1-16 .059). - Since October 2017: The Eskimos finished 2017 strongly with a 5-0 mark in October-November and a 12-6 record. Since that point Edmonton is 10-2 .833 overall behind only Calgary - Mike Reilly: Led the Eskimos to a 4th Quarter comeback victory, the 21st late game-winning drive of his CFL career. Reilly leads the CFL with 2,320 passing yards on pace for a career-high 5,965 yards. Reilly has 14 TD passes in 2018 and 131 in his career; his overall ratio is 131 TDs to 72 INTs, a ratio of 1.82 to 1. Reilly leads the CFL with 24 completions on throws of 20+ yard depth. - Chris Rainey: Did not play last week snapping a consecutive games run of 41 in a row and 50 of the last 51 games. - Edmonton comebacks: A common theme in the last 4 Edmonton wins ... they were not leading after the 1st Quarter. They lead the CFL with 3 wins when trailing after the 1st Quarter. In fact, all 5 Edmonton wins this year have required comebacks. - Long Edmonton TD drives: The Esks have 22 TD drives this year - those drives have averaged 74.9 yards or from their own 35. They have engineered 8 TD drives of 80 yards or more. Last Week's CFL Notables: - McLeod Bethel-Thompson: Led the Argos to a 42-41 victory over Ottawa. Here are a few superlatives from that game 1) From 24 down I: The Argo comeback matched the 8th-largest in CFL history, just 3 points short of the CFL record from 27 points. 2) From 24 down II: 2nd-largest in Argos' history, one point less than their 25-point recovery of Oct 2/94 (11-36 to HAM, won 39-36). 3) Half-time deficit: They trailed by 21 at half-time and won matching the 3rd-largest in CFL history after 30:00 of play. 4) 4 TD pass debut: One of six players with 4 TD passes in their 1st career start. CFL record: An incredible 8 TDs by Joe Zuger 1962) (Ricky Ray 2002, Matt Dunigan 1984, Condredge Holloway 1975, and Ron Reeves 1983 also had 4 TD debuts) 5) 2nd Half Passing: Bethel-Thompson passed for 233 yards and 4 TDs in the 2nd half alone. 6) Q4 game-winning drive: Drove 86 yards on 11 plays in 1:44 going 5-of-7 for 60 yards with completions to four different receivers. 7) 0:01 Left: Hit Armanti Edwards with a 23-yard TD pass with just 0:01 left on the clock on 2nd-&-10. - Johnny Manziel: Saw his first action making a start without having thrown a pass previously in the CFL. His 4 INTs were two short of the all-time record by a CFL debut QB starter (Tom Maudlin Sep 7/63 for Edmonton). Montreal made a Turnover on 5 of the first 6 possessions that Manziel ran and that included interceptions on 4 of his first 15 pass attempts. Manziel was pressured on virtually every throw however and was forced out of the pocket frequently. - Jorden/Mitchell: Kamar Jorden raised the CFL season-high for receivers to 185 yards in Calgary's 7th straight win, matching their best start since a 10-0 run to begin 1993. Mitchell raised his record to 63-10-2 in his 75th career QB start; he threw for 370 yards. - Hamilton +28 after Q1: The Ti-Cats 28-0 lead matched the largest in CFL history after 15:00 of play. - Calgary +14: Stamps tied a CFL record at 7 games in a row with at least a 14-pt lead matching the 1982 Bombers and 2011 Lions. - Edmonton: Drew the largest attendance for any CFL game this year with a crowd of 35,623. - Lewis Ward: Extended his 2018 CFL-best FG made streak to 19 and within two of the all-time record for a 1st-year player (L.Congi) ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

  2. Why does cfl.ca have Nye write the weekly prediction article? Worst record of all the predictors, mediocre writer and a Rider homer.

  4. This is the true litmus test. can we show better after getting a chance to play the offense that kicked us around so badly? we've made great strides in stats and in the eyeball tests against weaker opponents... let's see what happens against Hamilton again before passing judgement..

  5. Hate to burst your bubble, but there is no "heat on all responsible parties". Most thinking people recognize the direction this team is heading. Others have an agenda. And a 41-40 win is worth the same number of points in the standings as a 100-0 victory.

  7. This this this. The sky is not falling friends. CFL is having a bit of a rough patch in all cities. Look at Calgary, it is the best team by far for years and yet empty seats. All live sports are having dips in attendance. In the end live sports is one of the things that will keep cable companies alive so there will be a will to succeed beyond just the leagues themselves. South Winnipeg is growing. Big housing growth on both sides of the river. Sure there are a lot of immigrants but the second generation will be more open to "Canadian" experiences. The experience will continue to get better too. That golf course is not going to be groomed grass forever. There will be lots of housing and businesses including bars and restaurants close by. The rapid transit system south will be finished soon and the east west rapid transit will make the "horrible travel" easier still. A Grey Cup or two will shore up the "losing" mentality. Source: living in South Winnipeg with immigrant family and friends and riding transit regularly. Also be positive you wimps.

  9. Get what you are saying.....you never want to let guys get into their groove, no matter who they are. But am basing this observation, somewhat on personalty/and or mental toughness to respond to things not going their way, early. For instance, you can knock Reilly around early, but he will not change his approach. In contrast Jennings struggles, when you get to him early. Some guys do have a track record, one way or another.

  11. Almost.. -from tomorrow’s game notes.. - Bombers Off a Bye Week: Since 2014 and the return of the CFL to a nine-team league, the Blue Bombers have had 7 games coming off a bye week and are 3-4 under Coach O'Shea. However, after going 0-3 in post-bye games in 2014-15, they have since gone 3-1 in their last 4 outings. They were the last team to get a bye in the 2018 CFL schedule.

  13. Average attendance thus far is 26,380. This is right in line with many past seasons. As a point of comparison, we were 14-4 in 2001 with an exciting team. Average attendance was 27,033 and they blacked out home games back then. 2002 we were 12-6 and we averaged 27,559. Blackouts for home games that year too. 2003 we were 11-7 and average attendance was 27,225 and still home games blacked out. I don't think blacking out home games would make an impact on attendance.

    Introduce Yourself

Hello Everyone. My name is Doug and I am a new Blue Bombers fan from Belen, New Mexico USA. This is my rookie season for the Bombers and the CFL. I have become fed up with the NFL and I am enjoying this change immensely. I posted an introduction on another forum but, this one was brought to my attention via email today. Please have patience with me as I root around like a bull in a china shop trying to figure things out.

  15. As a newbie to the league and Bombers, is it acceptable to root for the Lions tonight versus the Eskimos? It would make the Bombers tied with the Eskimos after beating the Redblacks tomorrow night, right? 😀 Also, do Bomber fans have "special" names for each opposing team? Or do you call them by their team names? With the NFL, I used to refer to the teams as the San Francisco Whiners, Dallas Cowgirls, Washington Deadskins, Los Angeles Lambs, Seattle Seachickens, NY Midgets, Oakland Raiderettes ..... GO BOMBERS....CRUSH THE REDBLACKS!!!! Knock, knock!Who's there?Ottawa.Ottawa who?Ottawa know you're telling the truth?

O'Connor would have to win the remaining votes 70-30 to pull this off, and that's assuming no provisional ballots are discarded. It could happen, but I think this election is in garbage time. Tho of course O'Connor should do everything he's entitled to do to make sure the ballots have been cast and counted correctly.

That's where I also go, always get at least a 720p stream to work EDIT: run a good ad blocker too, makes all the linked sites run so much smoother. I'm using uBlock origin with a bunch of custom filters/white lists and related extensions to block virtually everything and automatically close any popups, redirects, everything. Otherwise I guess streaming is kind of terrible sometimes, I've kinda forgotten what the raw internet is like.

    US Politics

The Ohio congressional victory for the GOP was like us beating the Alouettes 7-6 on a last minute safety touch. Bombers still get the two points, but morningbigblue would be rightfully freaking out about our underperformance. Re, the bigger picture. it's a pat and often lazy left-wing thing to say that the Republicans are driven by racism, but man, after watching this Laura Ingraham piece I have to wonder about that. Her problem is that there are too many brown people in the USA, and that the USA she loves is gone because of that. (the bit about not voting for that massive demographic change is kinda funny, as Reagan and Bush I did far more to formally legitimize immigrants than Clinton or Obama, and Bush II almost got a giant amnesty bill to sign, before it was derailed by congressional opposition)

  25. I've never really liked this "analysis" of a QB... bceause this really applies to every QB... get pressure on them and they can't play their game... look at the history of the Pats losing big playof games with Brady at QB and I guarantee the common denominator in those games is the other team getting to Brady...

  26. He's also got the most punchable face ive ever come across in all my years on this earth. It really makes you appreciate Bob Irving even more(if thats possible) after listening to that idiot. Which is something i can no longer bring myself to do. As soon as i hear him on 1290 or wherever else(no idea why anyone even bothers asking his opinion on anything CFL related seeing as every word that comes out of his mouth is green diarrhea nonsense), i instantly turn the station. We truly dont know how lucky we are. Bob is so even keel and always maintains his impartiality no matter what the circumstance. Braindead fanboy Pedersen doesnt have an impartial thought or bone in his body. Surprised he doesnt walk the earth with green pompoms at all times.

  27. After 28 years of wandering in the wilderness, the only thing that really matters to me now is if we have a defence that is good enough to do its part in recapturing the holy grail… and on that score, I would have to see the jury is definitely still out. While I am not saying that the defence has not improved, the question is whether it has improved enough. I will only believe it has when it can more consistently contain the better offenses in the league and/or when late in the game, i.e. in a close game, in crunch time… The defence is able to preserve a victory.

  44. I watch nearly every game across the CFL each week and while I get just as frustrated with our defence as the rest of you, I would say the only defences that are better in the league are Calgary and Saskatchewan, and probably Ottawa although their latest showing is disconcerting. So that puts us above league average. Frankly, most of the defences in the league are being exploited like crazy and I think that has a lot to do with the modern PI and illegal contact rules. For several weeks our secondary has had some first year guys due to injury and we’ve still shown well, including sitting near the top in takeaways. I believe that we’ve been making mental errors where someone is out of position on a play. When guys are in position, they tend to win their battles (with the exception of the Edmonton season opener). The only thing that drives me nuts are how successful other teams are with five to ten yard outs on the wide side, but when you consider that that is rarely, if ever, a first read, it means we’re taking away what the QB actually wants. Hall over the last few weeks has let his front four do their jobs more often and been smarter about when to blitz and who is blitzing. Maybe just maybe we’ll see some progress. For those of you that don’t watch every game and complain when Reilly or Masoli puts up 300+ yards on us, try to remember that they do that against virtually everyone they play. It becomes very easy to complain about what we’ve got when we’re not comparing it to the rest of the league, the same way we sometimes see our guys as all stars and forget that other teams have good players too. Our defence is also very disciplined in terms of penalties, rarely being the team that hands over free first downs (with a few exceptions). That’s worth something. I still have the bitter taste of last season’s western final (and season as a whole) in my mouth, as I’m sure we all do, so that definitely creates a bias, but so far this season, this defence has been pretty decent. Let’s see if that remains true on Friday or not.

  46. my consensus is that some changes have been made that possibly did not come from Hall. As people observed, no more Bighill "hurling" himself into the O line uselessly for one. Which they were having him do at the start of the season.

    Blue Bomber Attendance

Anyone who thinks they get to decide who a real fan is and isn't... based solely on how many home games they attend... all other factors be damned... ought to give their swollen head a shake. One day I was gifted 10 free tickets by Wade Miller himself simply because I look like a walking Bombers billboard every game day. I spend hours upon hours reading CFL news and lurking on fan forums. I nearly cried when Dinwiddie threw that pick and I probably will cry when we finally hoist the cup. I'm a fan and I'd challenge anyone to say to my face that I'm not - just because I buy flex packs instead of ST's. Also if fans can only show support by spending money then I hope all these sanctimonious out of towners are buying the equivalent $ amount in merchandise, or recognize themselves as massive hypocrites.
