  1. Booch

    Some observations

Bad game all around..but nothing to get panties in a wad about..every team this yr has served up a deuce or two..and at end of weekend we will still be in 3rd..and have the tie breaker on B.C and 2 wins up on them and should be 2 wins up on Sask That being said... 1) this loss was totally on the coaching and not the players..from stubbornness to adjust and stupid decisions (putting Nichols back in..roster decisions) you can place this one squarely on the coaches. Sayles is not ready for prime time and was abused repeatedly yet we sit Fenner until the end..and he comes in and just makes plays..inexcusable and if that isnt changed for Cgy game I have lost a lot of faith and respect for the coaches 2) hopefully this ends the Lankford experiment..proof is in the pudding and and he proved it..pathetic kick return results and receiving.. gimme a break! Drops and no real threat at all. As I mentioned before any traffic or contact he cant make the catch as seen on the 3rd down fail and if u have speed to get behind the defense. What good is it if you cant catch. The 3rd down gamble if it was Washington..he makes that grab and would have positioned himself to box out the defender..Lankford doesnt have that skill set. Also not sure if it just me but when ball is in his hands I just cringe thinking he gonna fumble it for some reason. 3) Lapo play calling...deviate for christ sakes and put players in the spots to make the plays..as in the above comment even tho Dressler is a smurf..he can and does make the tough catches in traffic so to put a questionable receiver in that spot for that play is inexcusable as well..Wolitarsky is better suited for that..not a Lankford 4) Roster...A db backfield that doent have Fenner or Leggett starting with Randle..Alexander and Fogg..for now is just stupid..Sayles hurts us and I know our coaching staff gets all hot and bothered by new upstart rookies..but c'mon.. he ain't ready yet and having it as it was last 2 games is not putting out our best roster. Same with offence..If Dressler is still hurt then any receiving corp without Washinton or Flanders in that spot is again wasting talent and not giving us best option..Beat would be Washington as he gives a different body type and mismatch advantage and I will bet my left nut that once he is I bbn lineup..be tough to take him out..and I kinda like my left nut.

  4. CFL Game #47 Team Trends โ€“ Calgary at Saskatchewan: - Stamps Off a Bye / Bye games on the road: Calgary has played 17 games since 2005 when they have come off a bye week and have a perfect 17-0 record back to July 2005. This year, they won after a bye in 2018 Week #4 defeating Ottawa 20-17 on Jul 12/18. Their last loss after a bye came on Jul 1/05 vs TOR and that was in Wk #2 when they had yet to play that season. Calgary is 11-0 in the 11 of those 17 post-bye games that have been on the road as they are this week. - How Dominant has Calgary been? Up by 14+ Pts UPDATE: One way of measuring a team's sustained level of dominance is how often they take big leads. The Stamps have led in EVERY contest this season by 14 or more points and this it is now 7 games in a row. In CFL history only three teams have EVER led by 14+ points in more than 7 consecutive games and none made it to 8 in a row: Rob Maver Inside the 10: Maver has at least one punt pinning opponents inside the 10-yard line in his last 4 games and in 6 of 7 overall this year. He is #1 in the CFL with 7 of these 'I10' punts this year and with 70 since 2012. ๐Ÿ‘โ€๐Ÿ—จJustin Medlock is tied for 2nd with 5. (Last year Medlock had a total of 7) Lauther 94%: Since Week #2 Brett Lauther has been the have I CFL's most accurate FG kicker other Lewis Ward. Lauther has made 15-of- 16 attempts for a 93.8% mark over the last 6 games. What is remarkable however is that his average FG made in that span is 38.1 yards. For the season, his average FG made of 38.6 yards is #1 in the CFL. - Recent SSK v CGY matchups: The Riders have split the last two meetings against Calgary after snapping a 10-game losing streak against them across the 2013-2017 seasons. Since 2013, Zach Collaros will this week be the 7th different Riders' starting QB to face the Stampeders. Calgary has had just three in that time (Tate, Glenn & Mitchell). - Riders holding leads: The Riders have been fantastic recently in winning when they enter the 4th Quarter with the lead. Since 2016 they are 13-2 when leading after Q3 and 31-9 since 2013. - Calgary #1 in 20 Defensive Rankings: Including fewest points allowed, Calgary is #1 ranked in 20 out of the 28 defensive statistical categories. The only exceptions are primarily in Turnovers forced and passing attempts. - Alex Singleton Update: Through Week #9 no player had a higher % of his team's defensive tackles. Singleton has made 45 of the 258 Calgary defensive tackles for a 17.4% share. Next: Adam Bighill at 14.71%, and J.C. Sherritt at 14.65%. - Few starters: This game features the two teams that have employed the fewest number of starters this year. Saskatchewan has had just 31 different players start at least one game while Calgary is next at just 32 starters. - Zach Collaros: Combined with Hamilton and Saskatchewan he is 1-14 in his last 15 starts and 25-29 overall in 54 career starts. - Bo Levi Mitchell: Threw for a season-high 370 yards in his last game - this was his 6th career game of 370+ yards. Mitchell brings a 28-6-2 record as a starter on the road into this game at Mosaic Stadium. He also an active 8-game TD pass streak back to 2017 and has won his last 7 starts. - Sacks in 23 straight games: Calgary had their streak with at least one sack in 23 games in a row snapped last game. - 12.3 / 11.1 Pts Allowed: Calgary is challenging a long-held CFL record having allowed only 12.3 total points per game thus far. In the entire CFL Era (1958 to today), the fewest TOTAL points allowed record is held by the 1964 BC Lions at 10.5 per game and followed by Hamilton (1965) at 10.9 ppg against. - Calgary +17 T/O Ratio: The Stamps are at +17 for their 2018 Turnover advantage - that +17 mark after 7 games is on pace for +44 which would break the CFL record set by Edmonton in 1981 at +41. Calgary's club record is +27 set in 1996. - Most QB Starters Single Season: Montreal has used 4 different QB starters this year and with Johnny Manziel questionable for Week #10 may lead to Antonio Pipkin or Matthew Shiltz being #5 for them. The CFL record is 6 different starters by Winnipeg in 1983 (Dieter Brock, Tom Clements, Norman Gibbs, Nickie Hall, John Hufnagel and Mark Jackson). - 1st Down Rushing Avg: Despite having the CFL's #2 rusher in William Powell, the REDBLACKS have averaged the lowest number of yards on 1st down rushing plays. They have gained just 4.8 yards per 1st down rush and that ranks #9 overall. By contrast, Winnipeg is tied with Montreal for #1 in the CFL at 6.2 yards per 1st down rush. - Lewis Ward 96%: Ward began his career with a 3-for-4 FG performance in the season opener and since then has not missed a kick of any kind. Ward is now 25-for-26 96.2% with a streak of 22 makes in a row, the longest streak ever made by a 1st Year player.

  5. Agreed - you can't call out the fan base like that, even if some people were booing him. Just makes for an even more toxic environment next time things go south at home. I like what Harris had to say about Nichols' post-game comments: โ€œShoot, thatโ€™s the way it is, man. Our fans are great. We love our fans, they expect winning football and thatโ€™s what they deserve. But Matt also deserves a lot of respect, a lot of credit and tonight, for whatever reason, he didnโ€™t get that. But the whole offence deserved to be booed today, myself included.โ€ (Source: https://www.bluebombers.com/2018/08/19/upon-review-ott-44-wpg-21/) At least Harris is owning the fact the offense was a big reason for the loss Friday.

How about wondering why every year there are intriguing or exciting receiver prospects in camp (this year Corey Washington sits idle), yet our coaching staff either cuts them or strands them on the practice roster... while scrubs like Lankford get the tap on the shoulder??

Nichols does need to play better but I think we would had lost this game even if Mike Reilly was our quarterback. How many penalties did Nichols take? This game IMO was lost on undisciplined play across the board. How many 2 point converts and touchdown drives by ottawa had occurred after Winnipeg got the stop only to have given Ottawa a second life through a pentalty? Most of the time it was a penalty that had nothing to do with making the defensive stop. Iโ€™m sorry but this was one of Nichols better games this season. If the defense and the offense hadnโ€™t taken uncharacteristic penalties weโ€™d be celebrating a win and nichols likely ends up with 300 yards passing and zero turnovers. It doesnโ€™t bother me that he was booโ€™d but did we really expect Matt Nichols to put up 45 points and win the game. He never had and never will be that type of quarterback. We can win with Nichols but not like this. With Nichols as our qb we need to do all the little things Right and we found out what happens when we do all the little things wrong.

Easily? Yes, I would question that. Edmontonโ€™s offence is driven, and pulled along by Reilly. He has relied heavily on above average receptions by his receivers. Iโ€™ve not seen such reliance on great catches in a long time. Donโ€™t get me wrong, Reilly has proven to be the best, Just because the Bombers are susceptible to his comebacks doesnโ€™t mean he canโ€™t be beat. And the defences? I see problems in both team defences. Thereโ€™s no way their defence is โ€˜betterโ€™ than ours. We are very evenly matched. Reilly has been the difference..

  16. Agreed that experience is valuable for receivers, but Simonise's forte was supposed to be speed, and since some here were saying that we do not have the deep threat(s) we need, maybe he is an answer as a replacement for Lankford. Realistically, Lankford should not be that difficult to replace.

  17. I believe, we hold the tie-breaker against the Leos Our schedule says: CGY 2x EDM 2x SSK 3x OTT 1x MTL 1x I think there's hope, 3-4 wins should be doable... with Nichols or Streveller. and remember, we hold the tie-breaker against the Leos

  23. If there wasnโ€™t a better time to keep Streveler in the game, then I donโ€™t know whatโ€™s what. Players complained about the booing when Nichols went back in, but they werenโ€™t booing Nichols..they were booing that decision to remove Streveler. We werenโ€™t going to win that game at that point, but Streveler gave us energy and excitement, but Oโ€™Shea didnโ€™t see that. Bad read on his part. It was a moment everybody saw..except Oโ€™Shea.

  30. Yep. This fan base is past the point of being happy to make the play offs each year. Its time to turn the corner as a franchise and do what ever it takes to get that done.

  31. Hard to judge the DB's harshly given the amount they have Bighill, JSK, Leggett and Loffler blitzing on passing downs. They literally have no support under or over most of the time. That's why the back shoulder stuff and double moves are killing them. I'd like to see Leggett and Fenner both starting, one at safety, one at SAM. Play with a more traditional look. Less blitzing Bighill and JSK too. Use them more in coverage.

    Some observations

It looks like they have Loffler playing a non traditional role as a safety..why..not sure.. and is he capable of doing it?..not sure again as I don't know what his responsibilities are supposed to be. Sayles just needs to learn the game..league.. and players.. so he is getting abused bad cause of it..and with a defensive backfield.. if one guy is suffering it really hurts the overall unit as guys overcompensate..and also it just allows too much room in the weak spot. 2 back sets are fine..but we need to pull defenders out of the box and show verticle threat and more layered routes.. we send a token guy deep(ish) and rest are all in the short dump and immediate second level area..and most times usually within the hashes..congests everything and limits a lot of big play stuff as too many defenders in area.. What edm or Calgary how they spread it..and have guys get huge yac up the middle or with crossing patterns..they get the ball and 9 times out of ten have just the man on him to beat.. and if they do open field.. but us..guy makes a catch and within 5-6 yards are multiple defenders to contend with..look back at games and see how many times we have had guys catch in stride with room to romp..I can think of maybe twice? Our Offensive scheme is good if u have some variation and layers to it..but we dont..and teams now see it and will adapt and stifle it

  34. MOS and co will trot out Lankford and meanwhile Edmonton's depth receivers are Mitchell and Hazelton and Calgary has Michel and Begelton. If only a reporter would ask Walters a tough question such as "Why are we five years into your regime and you still can't find american receivers?"

  42. I don't think his post negates this. Our own players have responsibilities, but these results are consistent with a bend and break defense. If Mike O'Shea does not eradicate this scheme and philosophy this offseason, then his job too should be in jeopardy.

    Paul Lapolice

Said this several years ago, LaPo is not a great coordinator. He cannot or at least doesn't seem to adjust as the game goes on and certainly not at half time. He has had the luxury of having Harris in the second half of most games and as was mentioned last night, they appear to be a front running team or at least one that can play when they are close at the half. If they are behind any amount his running game goes down the tubes and he doesn't have a QB who can throw like Harris and for that matte the QB doesn't have the game plan that Ottawa did. In a nutshell we got out coached in all phases of our game. Our defense was terrible and Fogg had probably the worst game of his career. Saylers (not sure how to spell it) did not play well either. The game plan was terrible. Our offense ditto the defense, not prepared and far to heavily weighted on Harris. Our HC, wrong personnel decision: Langford, get rid of him you have at least three others either on the PR or on the sideline that can play better than him. His kick off returns east west instead of north south. Flanders far superior to him in every regard regardless of position. Challenging a play in the first quarter just another dumb coaching move. Too early in the game. The reality is we are a talented team with mediocre stubborn coaching.

Absolutely both. To keep this post short as I've made my points about both, Nichols is average at best, and Lapo can't adjust when things go wrong or a key player gets injured, among other things.

  45. O'Shea isn't showing he can win us a Grey Cup with some of the decisions he makes. For a guy with 5 1/2 seasons under his belt & he pulls a stunt like that? The handling of the Nichols/ Streveler situation tonight just shows how his stubbornness will be our downfall. Why did he put Nichols back in?? Why wouldn't he play Streveler earlier to get experience? Please don't say the game was still close & taking Nichols out would have meant we gave up. There was no way we were ever going to win this game. This would have been a perfect opportunity to play Streveler to give him much needed experience. One can only hope that Walters speaks to him about what happened & it doesn't happen again. Someone has to talk to O'Shea about this.

  50. This is the response? Thank you for completely proving what I'm saying. No one forces anyone to play in the CFL so how is it oppression? How about if you disagree with the protests you give me some legit reasons why it's bad that people are exercising their right to free speech. Just because I am a white Canadian doesn't mean I don't have eyes and ears to see what's going on. Some players are using the platform they have to bring attention to the differential treatment of people of different races, and if you don't think different groups get treated differently then you really aren't paying attention. Just because you're old doesn't mean it's OK to be racist. But her emails tho amirite?
