Bomber News: 2019 Off Season
Goalie and 6 others reacted to Colin Unger for a topic
The best way to soften that blow is to have good replacements for them. Time will tell on how good the replacements are but I do know that a good organization will replace players as they leave and not notice much of a difference. I remember a couple years back Calgary lost a lot of offensive lineman due to injury and they were still able to keep it together pretty good. Much more difficult of a situation than losing two interior offensive linemen in the offseason. I view Winnipeg as an organization that is basically at the Stampeders level now. In the past, you lose Nichols in training camp and Durant retires right before the season it would have been a gong show. They devised a gameplan that was successful in giving the team a chance to win until Nichols got back. Winnipeg definitely needs to add at least one proven receiver. Obviously, it doesn't have to be Walker. There's also something to be said for waiting to see how much of an improvement we get from young players like Wolitarsky, Simonise, Petermann, Nelson, Washington, or Thompkins. The CFL is a different beast than other pro football leagues. You can lose an allstar like TJ Heath and find a cheap replacement in Marcus Sayles who arguably ends up being a better player.7 points -

Dressler played his ass off for us & LaPo put him in situations where he got hurt like running fly sweeps. The guy was a baller for us every game. I'll never have anything negative to say about Weston.7 points -

Matthews would be better. So would Arceneaux & Roosevelt, imo. If I was running the show, I'd pass on Walker and sign Matthews for prob $100k less. Use the extra money to make a run at Ackie.5 points -

Fogg is all you want from a DB nowadays, turns the ball over. Interesting to see the DB market this year, everyone getting paid but them. I like that the Bombers shifted the money to pass rush and away from the secondary. Anyone who can cover is just going to draw endless flags.5 points -

The next half-decent receiver Walters finds will be the first. Since we’re resigned to playing Nichols as long as he’s healthy, I’d rather he had as much support through great receivers as possible.3 points -

The MBB All-Time Blue Bomber Team: Place Kicker
johnzo and 2 others reacted to SpeedFlex27 for a topic
There's a reason why kicking percentages were as low as they were back 40-60 years ago. Most kickers played a different position. Rosters were small so there was no room for specialists. All kickers played somewhere. They didn't spend the time needed to perfect their craft. That changed in the late 60's with the Gogolak's in the NFL as well as Ted Gerela (BC Lions) & his brother Roy (Pittsburgh). Teams saw that using kicking specialists helped the bottom line on the field & soon the NFL & CFL expanded their rosters so kicking & punting specialists could play. Colleges began recruiting kickers out of high school. High school players that had strong legs became punters & kickers. Instead of linebackers or receivers. It took a generation for the straight on kicker to become extinct in favour of the soccer style kicker. It also took a generation or 2 for qualified coaches to come along to be able to teach kids the proper kicking techniques. Today we have kickers routinely kicking FG's at an 80-85% clip year in & year out in both Canada & the US. In 1970, Gene Lakusiak was one of our 2 starting cornerbacks. As a corner he was a CFL All Star in 71 & 72 so he was a pretty decent player. The problem was in 1970 he was our kicker. He was good on 14 of 18 converts. He made only 4 of 26 field goals for a percentage of 15.4% which was horrendous. Yes, he actually scored 26 points as pour kicker which was a nightmare that I vividly recall. When Jonas came along in 1971, it was like a Godsend. We went from having the worst kicker in all of pro football to the CFL's leading scorer & the CFL's leading passer!! Jonas actually won us games with his leg. What a concept... Instead of watching Lakusiak blow another winnable game. Imagine having a kicker with a 15.4% accuracy record? And he kept his kicking job game in & game out. The interesting thing was that when Lakusiak was our kicker his play at corner suffered. Once he was free just to concentrate on being a corner his play was vastly different. . It was like the chains holding him back were removed & the pressure gone.3 points -

I don't think it's replacing him that's people are against. IF they find someone better perfect. You're making it sound like Thompkins has no business playing pro ball. Only speaking to his numbers as if that's the end all be all to show his talents. You're right, he didn't put up big numbers as our #4 option. Guess what, our #1 option didn't either. The only thing Thompkins could do was catch the ball when it was thrown his way. He did. Damn near every time. He was also a fantastic blocking for the leagues #1 rusher. I'm not opposed to replacing him. I'm opposed to shitting on a guy for doing his job as a #4 option.3 points -

Hearing that WR Derel Walker has agreed to join the @TorontoArgos. #argos #CFL — David William Naylor (@TSNDaveNaylor) February 14, 2019 Per sources, Derel Walker left Toronto with an offer of more than $280K. Plenty of interest still out there, but it's hard to think any other teams - WPG and SSK -- will be able to meet that price. Some believe it's only a matter of time before he accepts Argos deal. — Jeff Hamilton (@jeffkhamilton) February 14, 2019 That's a whole lot of money.2 points

I think Walters still plans to bring Dressler back, if he had no intention of doing so I think he would have released him well before F.A. opened out of courtesy, as he he did for Leggett, Randle and Wild and issued a statement at the same time thanking him for his service to the team, creating closure. Dressler deserves to be treated with class and I don't see this organization forgetting to do that. A possibility is that they may have already come to an agreement but are just holding back to announce his retirement and the launch of his entry into coaching. I would happily take him back for another year as either player or coach.2 points -
The truth in this statement makes me soo sad.2 points

Lapo likes to focus on a couple guys and ignore some. Honestly he probably would have continued to ignore Wolitarsky if Streveler hadn't had that connection with him. Dressler, Harris, Demski and Adams, these were the guys Lapo was always going to give the ball to heavily. Harris, Dressler and Demski cause they can take those short passes and gain yards after catching it and Adams cause he was Lapo's deep guy. The other receivers on the field? By and large distractions seeing only the occasional ball their way. Lapo is good at showcasing a few guys but he's not great at using everyone to their full potential.2 points -
