This team needs better receivers, no doubt about it, but bemoaning Arceneaux to the Riders is foolish. They guy was looking pretty close to done even before he wrecked his knee. He will be a non-factor.6 points -

Got the Walters interview here: We shall go on to the Cup, we shall fight in the West we shall look on the seas and oceans, we shall recruit, with growing confidence and growing strength in the passing game, we shall hunt on the beaches, we shall peruse the landing grounds, we shall turn over the fields and the streets, we shall burrow into the hills; we shall never surrender,5 points -

Bull. It’s through scouting, and drafting. You can add, heck a free agent signing may even put you over the top but you do not build through free agency.5 points -

You could make the case that getting those guys to avoid testing FA is a testament to Walters work.......5 points

Interesting hearing from management about what many of posters have been mentioning about Loffler's struggles in coverage...and confirms to me that he didn't get put in a traditional safety role...also interesting that Jones was in position to supplant him...t4 points

You want to talk Walters? OK, I'll go there, but that's not where I was going before this post. Walters MO in the past revolved around working the FA market big time, bringing in experienced guys and hoping that our scouts could fill in the blanks. This year he's gotten rid of a bunch of experienced guys and hasn't done much in the FA market. I hope the scouts can actually fill in the blanks this year. Walters biggest get this year was Bighill. No problem at all with that. We paid him big. We found him more money outside the SMS. All in all, good work. Goosen is one of our biggest losses, which isn't on Walters. He also extended a couple of good players. So far. So good. Losing Chungh wouldn't have been as big a deal if we hadn't already lost Goosen, but changing out 2 all star, NI OL at the same time is a big deal. Complaining that Chungh's camp knew that his value went up was sour grapes IMO, but Walters stuck to his 'number' and let Chungh walk. He stuck to his 'number' and let JSK walk. He stuck to his 'number' and let Loffler (A good decision IMO) walk. He also let Randle go, which I personally don't agree with. It remains to be seen if the new cheaper starters promoted from with in work out. Jefferson's a great DE. Rose can play although 3 teams in 3 years is a bit of a red flag. I'm on the record saying I'd have used the SMS room differently and I stick to my opinion. Making offers isn't Walters job. Signing players is. Other teams seem to value most of the FA's that we wanted more than we do. Is Walters 'number' the right one to get us the top players? It doesn't look like it is. I don't see us fixing the problems that we knew we had going into FA. I don't see us replacing the guys we lost to FA with FA's. I'd give Walters a C- so far in this year's FA game. That's hardly hating everything he does.4 points -
Zylstra, Mitchell or Duke. Honestly, right now I'm disappointed with the way we tackled free agency. I'm not too bent out of shape about Chungh, since the whole point of developing a strong stable of Canadian OL is to be prepared when departures come up. That's the business. I'm not too disappointed about Loffler, because anyone willing to pay him those dollars is insane. I'm mildly disappointed about JSK, but we kept Bighill and to me that is far more important, so hey, fine. Receiver grosses me out. We needed a WR1 worse than any team in the league and we lost out on all of them.4 points

Well - I guess we could sit here and rationalize why they shouldn't have signed each of those receivers Bottom line though: they NEED to sign a receiver and they certainly have not proven they can scout any. Just my 0.02 - sorry about beating a deceased equine.4 points

I tend to think we'll eventually end up signing Ackie. One of Matthews/Toliver would be nice in the interim. Have zero interest in cry baby Hazelton. But I think our coup still ends up being whichever one of Duke/Zyl/Mitchell comes back. I don't even know which guy I'd want most, they're all insanely talented receivers. Diontae Spencer could happen too. How did Terrell Sinkfield do last year?3 points

In only 3 games with Nichols as his QB back in 2015, Walker tallied 31 receptions for 470 yards and a TD. That works for me.3 points -

If we are talking QBs then what Strev has shown in his short time behind centre suggests he is a far better QB than Nichols....quicker decisions, better arm, better running, and spreads the ball around much better. However if you include the OC into the equation it may well be a different conversation. Many who have watched LAPO years ago see the same tendencies even today......he does not game plan for big strikes it’s all short and dump so he may well hinder what the QBs including Strev can and will do. With that said I totally agree from what I have seen Strev is a better QB and with some experience he will show he is a prototypes CFL QB. My hope is that both the OC and HC realize what they have....develop him and make sure he gets playing time so he doesn’t bolt to the NFL after this season. Make him feel wanted he seems like a real down to earth kid!3 points -

That's just the make-up of the man though. Khari had that gunslinger mentality and I'm sure his OCs (at times) weren't too thrilled with some of those chuck and duck plays but couldn't fault the results. One real difference between Strevs and Nichols is how they spread the ball around. Streveler didn't lock into a single guy (or no single guy dominated targets - for the most part) .. Each game, whether by accident or design, Nichols seems to .. "forget" about certain players.3 points -

I didn't see very much change in play calling between Streveler and Nichols. I saw one qb being hesitant and dumping it off and the other qb making much quicker decisions and had the arm strength to "knife" it in to guys like Wolly and Thompkins. Far to much last season did we see Nichols struggle throwing balls around the 10 yard mark where a receiver would be in stride and could catch the ball and gather some YAC. From what I watched guys had to dive or go to the ground to make any catches giving them no chance to turning it up field. Streveler was light years better at throwing to guys in stride. I do agree though that we run way to many passes that suit Nichols where it's a quick dump off and hope that the guy can break a tackle and make it 10 yards. I'd like to see more plays that they used to do with Khari where he chucked it up and let the receivers either make or break the play.3 points -

Thompkins is a Slot rec who will get the tough yards. He won't be a regular deep threat. I'm more interested to see what Simonese will do. He burned two of the "top" CBs last year for big plays. I'm hoping his development has continued and he will become a game changer regardless of his passport.3 points -

I don't think it's ludicrous to suggest RECs may be following QBs they like.. .as another poster theorized the other day. With D.Walker... I think there's lots of alluring things about TO and MLSE. Football specifc, fanbase etc... hell no. But as we see in other sports... lots of guys hate the spotlight. The flipside to the great fanbase argument is in a place like Toronto, Walker can conceivably have a year with no real pressure to succeed other than internal drive. Still makes the same coin...if not more... and I'd agree too that MLSE prob has some sort of housing options for these guys. When guys spurn Wpg for the big cities, I often think we're lucky. I want the guys who see the team we have, Osh's leadership, the string of playoff appearances... if this city ain't good enough for you, than you're not good enough for us. Simple.3 points -

With each of those ‘offers’, they were seriously trying to upgrade. They had placed value on each of those players, and the value was high, even though, as stated by Walters , it wasn’t as high as the asking. My point was , we stopped there, where our line was drawn, and where it fit in our budget. We didn’t go up and over to get said player. Kind of like an auction where you want an item but are unwilling to overspend on that item because it would look nice to our neighbours. Sure, he swung for the fences, like each and every one of us wanted, but he stayed within his limits. That’s still responsible in my books.3 points -

I’ve been excited in past years when we signed our share (and more) of free agents. - It didn’t work out. I’m more patient now. I’m dazzled by the Red Carpet treatment by a number of teams and even tempted to be a bit envious. BUT When I look at our roster, and see all the key re-signings that we’ve inked, and the couple of additions that we have made, I realize we didn’t need those more expensive options. We’re close. Question marks remain, but you really didn’t want all the fun in one day, did you?3 points
