  1. I think the Liberals probably feel if they blow this thing up, they have 100% lost but if they try to cover it up and sweep it away, when they are inevitably attacked on it during the election they can claim there was no wrong-doing exposed. And cling to the idea that JT can charm his way to another win. The Cons better be friggen ready to embrace moderate voters. When I was in Mexico last year I did meet one Trump supporter but he was quite negative on Fox News saying that the worst aspects of the right wing movement basically take over and it overwhelms any good work Trump might be doing. I find more and more Canadians are seeing JT as an empty suit. Not so much that they hate him or think he's a bad person...just that he's totally devoid of anything beyond his pretty face.

  4. When you consider how many players come out of Quebec, it wouldn't do anyone any favours if other teams weren't allowed to draft them...

  5. Considering what kind of mess the Bombers were in when Harris started his CFL career, I'm not sure it would have been doing him any favour to have drafted him then.

  7. TIDBITS - CJOB Special. (Shorthand version) Walters Moving on from Dressler Flanders - want more return ability - will see. Matthews - he’s focused on NFL, but ‘could’ end up here. O’Shea - regrets losing ‘good’ people, football and otherwise. Jefferson will fit right in. Intrigued to see him play. Ultra competitive West. Negotiations- players will work hard to get what they want. Better partnership and communication now. Couture ready? Yes. Gray will compete. No doubt OL can be as good. TC will determine who’s who and where they play. Streveler- expand his roll..still Matt’s team. Augustine - will have to work on ST & protection. Will be competition 2 spots open on Rec. Petermann & Simonize - both improved. Knox to Wilson. Wilson was slated for MLB. Mexican player in camp? Looking at it. Globalization- to improve revenue streams. Likes the big thinking. Nichols knee injury? Into good training. No knee concerns. Wants to be more consistent. Harris - doesn’t know where the money’s coming from when asked of teams signing Free Agents. Brown & Tait - negotiations? Brown brings up a fund for injuries. Tait - guranteed contracts? No go. Pie is too small. Sask. - Tait says it all depends on Collaros...otherwise - yeesh Brown says they’re going to be terrible and hopes they’re terrible.

  10. True - but he was part of pretty much the only dominant OL the Bombers had from 1995 - 2012 Gauthier, Sheridan, Khan, Greene, Goodspeed That was a solid group.

  13. So we would basically be able to claim a guy like Geoff Gray, Nic Demski or Anthony Coombs one per year without having to draft them?

  16. As a cost savings measure this strategy is going to register as a huge fail on Boeing's behalf, I expect their stock to tumble as more companies and countries reject the MAX 8. Changing the flight characteristics of the original design and trying to compensate with gadgetry is a big no-no, I see the MAX 8 project as dead in the water.

  18. Doesn't bode well for "pilot-less" commercial flight anytime soon, flight has too many variables to manage and thousands of things that can go wrong and do. The more complicated they make these airplanes the less chance a human has of correcting malfunctions while in panic mode. It sounds like this system should have been integrated into "auto-pilot" with one big red button to turn it off or turn it on. K.I.S.S. principle.

  21. Beating a dead horse here but I find this incredibly fascinating. Here's an article (published after the Lionair crash but before the most recent crash). It explains what the pilots likely faced. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/16/world/asia/lion-air-crash-cockpit.html?action=click&module=Top Stories&pgtype=Homepage In essence the new MCAS system activated, trimming the plane nose down by raising the stabilizers located on the tail. MCAS actived due to a fault sensor that indicated the plane was too high nose-up (which it wasnt). The pilot's would instinctively pull back on the yoke to raise the nose. This force causes the elevators on the tail to activate. But the elevators provide weaker nose-up than the stabilizers provide nose-down. So its basically a tug of war that the pilot cannot win. There is a procedure to overcome this but, incredibly, it sounds like Boeing never shared this with pilots. In fact, it seems Boeing never shared the existence of the MCAS system at all. After the Lionair crash, they sent out a guide to over-come the MCAS trimming nose down but its a bit convoluted. On the left side of the yoke is a switch that controls electrically powered trimming. So when the MCAS wrongly trims the plane into nose-down, the pilot would have to recognize what is happening and use his left thumb to active this switch, over-riding the MCAS pull on the stabilizers. But once the nose leveled and the pilot released the switch, MCAS would kick in again and go nose-down. The pilot must flip two switches to kill electrical power to the trim system to cut off MCAS control and then use the manual trim wheel to adjust the stabilizers back to stable. And apparently this MCAS was a cost saving move because Boeing engineers originally had plans to create larger stabilizers on the tail to off-set the increased size of the engines but that costs money (and might have caused the MAX planes to be given a new classification, rather then being considered 737's...new classification requires new certification for pilots). Basically, Boeing said the MAX planes were basically the same 737 and required minimal training to operate. I imagine Boeing is working on a software patch but there will surely be a push for a re-designed tail section and fleet-wide implementation before the planes fly again.

The Liberals won last time on the strength of the dislike for Harper, they can't rely on that anymore and Trudeau has been exposed for what he is and can't rely on that anymore. They gotta do something or we're going to have prime minister weenie in Scheer. Covering up **** never helps, it only makes it worse. Shoulda apologized, canned Trudeau and moved on, but nope, not our Liberal party. Still entitled to their entitlements.

  23. I'm old enough to remember the territorial protection in the CFL. Teams paid for players college and they got very involved at the high school level to find the best prospects early on. There were always home town hero's on every team. It was a great system, especially in the west.

  29. Bill Frank. The man was a monster at LT back in The Day. Frank & Walby may have been the 2 most dominant tackles to play for the Bombers. Walby at RT & Frank at LT. Please add Bill Frank at Tackle. Buddy Brown also deserves to be on that list at Guard. Bill Frank towering over DE Wayne Smith, His Rough Rider opponent.

  30. When the Atlantic team comes in, I wouldn't mind seeing the No of NI starters drop to 6, and increase the active roster by one or two NIs. Young guys still get a chance to play and prove them self, earn spots. Teams can start that 7 and get an extra DI, but they aren't forced into starting someone whose a fringe roster guy.

  32. Walby is the best OL of all time in the CFL, so he gets a spot by default. I'm tempted to give Bryant the other one because he's been so good and so steady. Feel like Frank Rigney, Buddy Tinsley and Dave Mudge all deserve serious consideration tho. Guys like January, Goodspeed and (especially) Perez aren't even in the same class...

  34. So the special teams have been completed, with Wade Miller taking the last spot, and John Bonk is running away with the vote at Centre. Therefore it is time to move on to the guards and tackles. I have divided them up as best I can into their specific spot, hopefully I have not made any glaring errors as to who plays in what position (some players split time at both, tried to divide them based on where they either played the longest or where they received league recognition at all-star time). All info as to position comes first from the Blue Bomber media guide and then other online player sites - don't hate on me if I got a position wrong, but please offer corrections, and as always any omissions. Here is a sizable list of nominees to start things off. GUARD - Nick Bastaja, David Black, Travis Bond, Larry Butler, Bill Ceretti, Brendan LaBatte, Ed Kotowich, Les Lear, Bob Lueck, Brett MacNeill, Lou Mogol, Steve Patrick, Cornell Piper, Sherwyn Thorson TACKLE (there will be at least a couple of really great players who won't make the top 2 here) - Stanley Bryant, Mo Elewonibi, Bill Frank, Martin Gainor, Dan Goodspeed, Jamarcus Hardrick, Richard Huffman, Glenn January, Dave Mudge, Butch Norman, Christopher Perez, Frank Rigney, Roger Savoie, Bobby Thompson, Buddy Tinsley, Chris Walby

  35. I was in Costa Rica in January on a tour with an American guy and a guy from Germany. Me and the German guy got into a rousing conversation about how useless our current elected leaders were. He really couldn't stand Merkel. After slagging our respective heads of state, we looked at the American dude (from New Hampshire apparently) expectantly to see if he would join in the slagging, and he just shrugged his shoulders and said "what are you looking at me for?"

  36. I thought his first five games here were pretty good, particularly in the faceoff dot. His last two games have been very forgettable, though. Then again, I think the entire team wants to erase last night's mostly pitiful effort.

    The RIP 2019 Thread

Had no idea Randy Turner was even sick. **** cancer, man. Turner was a Bombers columnist back in the day and was so unbelievably talented. He did Odds and Sods after every home game and they were as funny as they were well written. He was a huge curling fan and while he did write about it often, he also curled in the big MCA Bonspiel every year for a good number of years. He was the first writer I ever saw use the term "Grand National Drunk" to describe the Grey Cup, and it's stuck with me ever since. In recent years, he became an absolute must-follow on Twitter, as his ability to be the most sarcastic prick in the room translated well to that medium. Legend doesn't seem to describe it well enough...one of the best Winnipeg media personalities ever. Period.

  39. It's always going to be a numbers game. For every good Canadian there must be a hundred as-good Americans. Wouldn't be surprised if it's even more. What we really need is more loopholes for guys like Ben Cahoon and Drew Wolitarsky to slip through and become eligible "Canadians" Interestingly, Wolitarsky (my favourite Canadian on our team right behind Andrew Harris) wasn't born here, didn't go to school here, and didn't grow up here. It's his ability to play ball I like, even more than his shiny new passport.

  40. No way should they reduce the amount of Canadians... that is a very unique factor that really can change the make up of a team. It really adds a unique twist to the game that I really like.
    1 point
  41. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the ratio is EXTREMELY important to me. I'd rather watch a team of all Canadians than a team of all Americans. The NFL can have all Americans....I want a league that's about MY country and people who were born and raised and went to school here!!

  43. 1 less NI per team = the 9 worst NI's not getting to play pro football in Canada. The CFL has reduced the number of NI starters in the past, and it didn't stop folks from watching. Reducing the starters by 1 wouldn't stop (m)any folks from watching. I've never heard anyone say... 'If they don't start 7 NI's, I'm not watching any more'. Personally, I think they should have reduced the number of NI starters by 1 when Ottawa came back into the league.
