Hi everyone. I'm new to MBB, and appreciate the opportunity to make a small pitch. I am an author and CFL fan/historian in the Toronto area, currently working on my second book about the Argonauts. The first (Bouncing Back: From National Joke to Grey Cup Champs) was published in 2013 and told the story of the 1983 Argos, who ended a 31-year Grey Cup drought that year, just two years after the worst season in franchise history. The book I'm working on now is about the 1991 Argos, who were owned by John Candy, Wayne Gretzky and Bruce McNall, signed Rocket Ismail to the largest contract in football (not just CFL, but football, period) history, and won the coldest Grey Cup ever played -- in Winnipeg, of course. I've interviewed dozens of players, coaches, execs and others associated with the team and the league of that era, and I'm planning a research/vacation trip to Winnipeg in July (to coincide with the Argos' game there -- my first chance to experience IGF!) for interviews with individuals who were involved with the 1991 Grey Cup festival and game. I'm looking for connections to anyone who might have good stories and experiences from Winnipeg's first time playing host to the big game. I'm especially interested in interviewing individuals who had encounters with John Candy that week, but at this point I'll consider any interesting connection that might factor into the story. I'd also love to find anyone who has any connection to the two frozen beer cans that were tossed at the Rocket as he crossed the goal-line with the kickoff return TD that essentially clinched Toronto's win. I realize it was 28 years ago, and at this point anyone of a certain age could claim to be (or know) the throwers. I'm certainly not counting on being able to positively identify those responsible, and I definitely don't want anyone "brought to justice." But everyone old enough to have seen the game remembers the first beer can almost hitting Ismail before its frozen foam exploded on the turf -- the second can, fired from a different part of the stands a second or two later, has been largely forgotten -- and yet nothing (as far as I know) has ever been reported about who did it, why, etc. A search for the thrower is potentially a fun little angle to pursue along with the much bigger picture of the Argos (and the league) in 1991. Anyway, all of that is to say, if you have a personal connection to the 1991 Grey Cup game that you think would be worth me hearing about as part of my research, and/or you know anyone who has such a connection, I'd love to hear from you. You can DM me but a better route would be to email me: paulwoods13@gmail.com. Thanks!3 points

I think he'll retire. He's old and beat up. His contract was front loaded, so he's not making as much anymore, and the Canucks get stuck with a worse cap hit than the Panthers do if that happens.2 points -

Looks like Ottawa is going to give Montreal some competition for the East basement this year. Their offense was going to be shaky to begin with, given the players they lost and now they lose their OC late in the off-season.2 points -
It was how he went about like he was better than everyone else in the league and he proved that by first demanding a $400K paycheck to come into the CFL. And then the manner in how he left leaving his team in a bit of shock. Right or wrong, MTL paid up for him and he just **** on them. And then to tell some AAF guys that the CFL was a terrible game and he couldn't succeed in the game because it's not really football. I don't have that interview but that is what one of the AAF TV announcers described in the game that Memphis played against the Iron. It's his smug attitude toward the CFL that makes me happy to see him fail.2 points

If they can't get government support or afford to build a proper stadium then why bother? I think what's happened now is Randy Ambrosie is in this so deep & has taken the CFL along with him that to back off now would be a major black eye to both him & the CFL. So, they'll just forge ahead & damn the torpedos. They'll handle a financial crisis when it occurs so no sense worrying about it now. I just can't see this team competing for free agents or for them to ever sell out consistently. We'll be seeing crowds of 16,000 at their home games & the team will be another burden to the other 8 teams. I didn't include Toronto as they're already a burden to everyone else. Ambrosie is talking about a LDW Coast Bowl with the Lions. They must be thrilled knowing they'll be forced to fly 2/3 of the way to London over 5 time zones to play that game against an opponent who'll never be a serious rival.2 points -

that would be something. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6873379/Astronomers-soon-reveal-picture-taken-black-hole.html I don't get a lot of it, they say nothing can escape a black hole, but they also say anyway, this is a lecture I watched on the subject, which is really accessible.... by one of those brilliant scientists.... his explanations are very good.1 point

What I gather from this post is you wanted a good backdrop. But, standing at the Grand Canyon, and using the word drop, in any form, goes against my good judgment. That’s how I take care of my selfie..1 point -

Did I read the street party admission is included with a season ticket playoff purchase? Wont that be the whole 15,000 or is this an additional 15,000? Its a great idea to control numbers and benefit charity. Soon the city will complain of the costs...of a charity initiative. 😉1 point -

I find its such a massive drop it almost doesnt seem right. Like, Im not sure people appreciate it because of how big it is. I sat on an outcrop with my feet hanging over. Stood near the edge with my back to the canyon to get a high selfie showing the fall. I mean, yeah, stupid as **** if you fall, but a heck of a photo if you dont!1 point -

As compared to mike singletary, steve spurrier, mike martz, bill polian, With troy polamalu and hines ward involved as well. I feel like the mere existence of both the xfl and aaf makes for a nearly 0% chance both combine for 3 seasons before folding.1 point

Good news, Laine's predicted 4 wins to close out the season.1 point -
Had Charlie Roberts expended anywhere near the preparation time that Milt Segal put in, he would have totally eclipsed George Reed as the best running back the CFL has ever seen, but a Red Bull plus a couple of chocolate bars as breakfast, game day or nor isn't gonna do it. He would have been a legend rather than just another talented runner.1 point

I think about this every now and then and it still bothers me... just imagine what kind of player Charlie would've been if he had put in even half the effort Milt put in... probably the most purely talented player I've ever seen play...1 point

Must have been a considerable uptick in salary to make that move. With more money comes expectations. Fan expectations are as follows, take careful notes, Derek. 1. Be positive .don't tell it like it is. That's being a nit picking negatron. Out of touch with an agenda. Defend and praise the people will defend and praise. 2. But don't be positive for QBs, coaches , GMs and other team functionaries we have turned against. This will change often. This makes you an apologist and somebodys lackey. 3. Be negative towards things we are negative about. That's the way it is so tell it like it is. 4. If there is any confusion consult with us, daily if possible, on what to say and think. Got all that, Derek?1 point
