    Covid-19

Three responses to COVID 19 are happening: 1. This is all being blown out of proportion by (insert favourite scapegoat: media, liberals, scientists, etc) and people taking precautions are acting like wool producing mammals. 2. We're all going to die! Let's buy as much stuff as possible! Where's the hand sanitizer! 3. Let's stay calm, trust the science and be proactive The challenge: having dialogue with all three groups.

    Did You Know..

I've never understood punishing athletes for using marijuana. It is NOT a performance enhancing drug from what I've read, quite the opposite, so why test for it at all? It's just a remnant of the insane U.S. drug war. "Research has shown THC to inhibit motor control, balance, reaction time, and coordination. And while THC increases sensory feedback (more vivid colors, increased sense of touch, etc) that feedback is more difficult to properly utilize given the chemical’s inhibiting effects on movement." Or - more deaths are caused by the flu, diabetes, and cancer - some even mention abortions. Together with clips of some quack, saying we just need high doses of vitamin C and D. This point of view is the one I find most frustrating.

I'm 3, for sure.... Down the middle is always the best way to be. 1 and 2 are difficult to deal with at the best of times, in any situation.

  10. I did some digging and it turns out that the winner is determined by total points scored, regardless whether the points are through touchdowns, field goals or rouges. So yea, 18 points is 18 points.

  11. In my line of work if I take over a job from someone, I stick with what they were doing until I have a good understanding of it, then I change things to suit my style or where I think there's room for improvement. Sometimes it stays similiar, sometimes everything changes. That's what I expect from Buck, he should already understand the system and what he feels works and doesn't work, so I expect him to change things to suit his style. His style as a QB was never to cowardly check down every play, I suspect that won't be his style as an OC. It really comes down to what Buck thinks will improve the offense. If he thinks more aggressive playcalling will do that, then I expect that's what we'll see. While I don't like Lapo as a coach because I don't like his playcalling, I do respect his playbook and knowledge. He designs some very nice plays. So I hope we keep a lot of the playbook, and just utilize it different in how we call the game.

Here in Winnipeg, city facilities such as libraries, recreation centers and pools are closed as of tomorrow. Am wondering if movie theaters, gyms, dining establishments are next? I think for me that adds to the worry, trying to plan ahead for what may come.

The media is reporting what the government and health officials are saying. That's their job. The media isn't to blame... At least in Canada. That Fox News thing is pretty typical for them. They're a ******* mess, but everyone already knows that.

    Covid-19

Weird to turn this in to a racist type of thread altho honestly not surprised by this. Im looking at Manitoba, 6 of our now 7 cases are all travel related and its believed the 7th is a relative of 2 of the travelers. Should they close air traffic for 30 days? Yeah probably but what about the idiots to the south of us who are out in large groups getting drunk or the local idiots going to do the same? So.. How do you control it? U control stupidity... And by that i mean the people, so you shut it all down except maybe grocery and gas stations and obviously hospitals and medical facilities.. Lets be safe and say until May 1st. Id def stop Intnl flights to Canada but also from since im assuming the majority of Canadian cases are similar to Manitoba and travel related (Phillipinos population is large here) But I'd close the US/Canada border also cuz Americans are gonna be a problem here. U got 130 million of em who think this is the flu.

yeah, and it's one of those things that's kinda like Y2K, for the oldsters out there ... tons of people-hours and money were spent to make the new millennium a non-event from an IT standpoint, and so when it went pretty smoothly, everyone was like "why did we make such a fuss about that? Typical overreaction."

    US Politics

I dunno. The Dems are beholden to a lot of business money -- I don't know if it's less or more than the GOP but don't kid yourself, there is a corporatist wing of the Democratic Party that really really doesn't like rocking the boat. (and yeah, this is a "they're all the same" argument. I've said before that in certain ways they are all the same. but In a lot of significant ways some are way different.)

Time to stop playing by Republicans rules. They are not interested in any compromise so stop pretend they are acting in good faith. Play on their level or else things will continue to slide into the abyss.

This is why we're getting a jump start and "over reacting". Anything to not end up like that. I have a friend that I went to high school with that married a fella from Italy so is married with kids over there. Day 23 of quarantine. Home schooling the kids. 300 Euro fine for being caught outside of your home. It's dystopian... So crazy. What we're doing now with our own lockdowns is perfectly reasonable given how this COULD go...

  39. It may be helpful to distinguish between pandemic and epidemic. A "pandemic" means that it is widespread, whereas "epidemic" means intense and localized.

"Today WHO declared the coronavirus COVID-19 a “pandemic” – when there is not the slightest trace of a pandemic. A pandemic might be the condition, when the death to infection rate reaches more than 12%. In Europe, the death rate is about 0.4%, or less. Except for Italy which is a special case, where the peak of the death rate was 6% (see below for further analysis). China, where the death rate peaked only a few weeks ago at about 3%, is back to 0.7% – and rapidly declining ..."

    Covid-19

thanks! My family is pretty well set up to ride this thing out -- we have no kids, tons of friends, and jobs we can work from home -- but like JCon says, school closures are really jacking folks' lives up here. Emergency childcare + social distancing all at once, that's a nasty combination. And we've got a lot of small businesses here that are running month-to-month and they're really going to get smacked by this. My restaurant friends are organizing fundraisers and gift card drives so that they can keep some money flowing in to pay the bills.

I'm in the event industry, with a couple of outdoor food trailers and 3 indoor units. I haven't worked for several months and was anticipating 3 events to pay the bills until my outdoor season starts. All 3 of my events have been cancelled. I don't know what I'm going to do. I am in full on panic mode for money concerns as I have big bills that need to be paid to keep the ship moving. If it goes into the summer, well that will be the end for my business. Anxiety through the roof
