No, there are no both sides. This is a science argument and science doesn't pick sides. The effectiveness of the flu shot is what it is. Vaccines are for herd immunity and protecting the weakest among us.5 points -

You didn't come out and say that coronavirus was no big deal, but you have definitely downplayed the severity of it, and you have implied that the measures being taken are too extreme. But those measures are what will prevent the healthcare system from being overrun, and in turn, people dying because they couldn't get proper treatment. And if the measures don't work, it's because not enough people listened. But if they do work, it wasn't an overreaction; it means we took proper precautions.4 points -

Anti-vax posts have been removed - start an anti - vax thread if need be - but keep them out of the COVID 19 thread. Rants have also been removed. This has been a valuable thread that is needlessly evolving into anti-vax rhetoric. Do not private message me - my explanation is clear.4 points -

Flattened because we're all for the most part taking extraordinary measures to keep it that way. The issue is always going to be that when things open up again it will spike. This is a very contagious virus. It's not necessarily the most deadly, but it spreads so easily you can overwhelm the system pretty easily.3 points -

The simple fact is. Covid is more contagious and more deadly then the flu for which there is a vaccine. It sucks so many people die. But it’s not the potential wild fire Covid is. That’s the difference. People can say oh look the curve is flattening. I guess we didn’t need a strict lockdown. When it’s flattening precisely because of a strict lockdown. every flu season you don’t have major cities like New York over run in hospitals because of it. it’s really rather simple. the deniers who reach to grasp the most tenuous of logic do so to use as a wedge to bolster their alt right trump love anti truth nonsense.3 points -

This is contrary to the what the federal government has stated. They say in a "best case scenario," social distancing will last until at least July. Covid will not be over in May. It might peak at that point, but there will still be many infections at that point, especially if we don't properly flatten the curve.2 points -

Nobody is ready for what is coming. Already there are stories in the newspapers and on TV questioning the White House estimates of 100,000 to 240,000 dead. The White House officials who devised those models won't provide the assumptions that went into them, and none of the models contained an endpoint for when the virus might run its course and the dying will stop. I just saw a public health expert from the University of Minnesota on MSNBC who dismissed the White House models out of hand and said we're looking at more than a million deaths from COVID-19 before the end of the year. More than a million.2 points -

Because the strong and healthy can still pass it on to vulnerable people, even if they are not symptomatic. We also don't know everything about this virus yet, as it is new, so it is incredibly dangerous to put the general population at risk by not taking precautions. It could have more detrimental effects on healthy people than we realize. Right now when we don't have a vaccine is all the more reason to keep our distance. A vaccine will be developed eventually, so in the meantime, let's not let it spread exponentially. Yes, the closures are terrible for the economy, but I would rather millions of people not die or have irreversible damage done to their bodies. You also keep saying that the flu is deadlier, but the coronavirus death toll has only spiked within the last two to three weeks. We don't know that it isn't going to be worse than the flu in a few months time. THIS is why we are being more cautious with coronavirus than with the flu.2 points -

So on one hand, you're saying that coronavirus is no big deal and that the flu needs to be taken more seriously. But on the other hand, you are criticizing the #1 remedy to the flu crisis (aside from basic hygiene). How the hell does that make any sense? As far as the effectiveness goes, yes they sometimes miscalculate which strain of the flu is going to be the one that gets bad, but getting the shot is still better than nothing and should help boost your immunity. As far as the "hazards" go, there is a far, FAR greater chance that you will be harmed from the flu than getting harmed from the vaccine. People who are immunocompromised especially cannot take that risk. Flu shots are not perfect, and nobody is claiming that they are, but they are better than the alternative (getting seriously ill). And this is coming from someone who, admittedly, hasn't gotten the flu shot for a while, but in light of the pandemic, will be getting it going forward. Always take precautions.2 points -
maybe the most interesting thing, to me, was that Americans who play CIS ball will now be considered NIs. As explained by Walters, if Brian Dobie recruits an American to U of M, and they play for 3 years and earn their degree, then they'll be declared NIs for the CFL. Pretty interesting...2 points

Not quite, only goes back to 1950... so there is no footage of their losses in 1923, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1934... Also fun fact: In 1936 and 1927, the Canadian Rugby Union refused to allow them to compete for the Grey Cup. Can we still elect to do that?2 points -

The scary thing for the US is that Trump is taking almost all his information from Fox News and regurgitating it word for word. Apparently commercial distributors in the US are buying up as much of the critical supplies as possible, marking them up substantially and then essentially selling them to the highest state bidders. It is the free enterprise system at its worst.1 point

I used to read GR in the early 2010s then I found too many factual inaccuracies and couldn't find anything other than cherry picked and manipulated data and opinion pieces masked as factual reporting and studies... It's a crank website. Trust me, I used to frequent that site. And yes, I have considered the links and info you have posted... weighed it against other sources and dismissed them because they are so out to lunch. Now if a website continues to churn out misinformation... it gains a reputation.... and at a certain point, it's safe to say that it is a crank website.1 point -

The flu question is bewildering - the more you look at data, the more I wonder why we don't do more Covid is a higher death rate but disproportionately affects 50 and older - mostly 70+... anyone who says different is not looking at the stats - I totally agree that we are saving lives now at the expense of deaths when Gen X needs senior care - we will have no money, massive debt and no tax base... I also agree that this lockdown is a panic response and herd immunity - far better to test and isolate those in danger but I don't think we have a choice... if anything this highlights how the Boomers have overwhelmed our health care systems already and how we are on a razor thin margin of error I think we are flattening the curve just to buy time - and that's not a bad thing We are fighting the unknowns right now with this lockdown - I think next winter, Covid hits again and we respond the same as we do with the flu...1 point

For the millionth time, because this is a new virus that spreads ******* fast! The flu has been around forever and doesn't overload the health care system. That's what we are trying to accomplish here, save lives by not having to choose who lives and who dies because we don't have enough resources to handle everyone getting sick at once.1 point -
