    Covid-19

And your plan was to do nothing, somehow identify and isolate everyone who's vulnerable, and then wait for herd immunity to develop. This is a new virus - how could officials KNOW FOR SURE who the most vulnerable people were? Some pandemics have killed many young and healthy individuals. But there was no way to predict (in the early going, maybe not even now) precisely who the vulnerable segments of the population were. You point to some segments as being statistically insignificant - but you forget that those statistics were not available a few months ago. The Spanish flu is the classic example of what can happen if you go the herd immunity route - most governments in 2020 just could not take that risk.

    Covid-19

Michael Gallagher - infectious disease physician COVID-19 has changed everything. The way we live, the way our kids learn, the way we work. It has trashed the economy, exploded unemployment, and harmed businesses, many of them, sadly, beyond repair. But here’s the deal: it’s real and it’s here and it’s still spreading. Do you want to know why medical people, real medical people, not some crackpot quacks and kooks with a YouTube account or Facebook page, are taking this seriously? Because it’s serious. And we’re serious people when it comes to people’s health and their lives. Yes, it mostly kills at-risk populations (the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions) but it also kills perfectly healthy people with no prior diagnoses and we don’t know why. I’m so tired of people acting like there’s information that’s being cooked up or withheld. You know why there’s lots of gaps in the information? Because we’re still learning about this virus every day. It’s new. It’s never been seen. How it acts, how it spreads, why it does the things it does is all new and we’re learning on the fly. Stop mistaking genuine lack of information for misinformation or withheld information. The numbers: this one sticks in my craw like no other. “I heard they didn’t die from COVID-19, they died from a heart attack but they were positive so they called it COVID-19 to boost the numbers and scare people.” Stop. It. You know how many people died specifically from AIDS? Zero. AIDS patients die from pneumonia or some other illness normal, healthy people fight off because the AIDS virus destroyed their immune system and they couldn’t fight off the infection. But at the heart of it, they died because of AIDS. The coronavirus attacks the respiratory system. The respiratory system is, in case you didn’t know, pretty important to sustaining life. It also has a huge impact on how other organ systems, like the heart, work. Guess what, when your lungs don’t work because they’ve basically filled with brick mortar because the virus is attacking them, that puts a bit of a strain on your ticker and very well can cause it to fail. So unless you have a basic understanding of or want to understand how interconnected organ systems are and how the body fundamentally functions: stop. End Part 1

It's questionable that it is the most sensible course of action for Sweden... and Sweden is not a good comparable country anyway. They have a very robust social safety net because of their investment in it and high taxes. Compare that with America for example where people struggle to get healthcare at the best of times.... It's just another bad faith argument by people who care more about their own lives not changing than they do about their fellow people.

  27. Originally, the tax cut was going to "pay for itself". Part of that plan was to repeal Obamacare, denying 20-22 Million Americans access to health care, and diverting monies to cover some of the tax measures. When that failed in the House, Republicans went to plan B - just make the cuts anyway, and add a couple of Trillion to the debt. Not a peep from those solid fiscal conservatives.

Trump took the work Obama did and claimed credit for it and drove it toward a cliff. The economy was going to crash under trump. Jobs aren't the be all end all, the stock market isn't the be all end all. Well paying jobs are the signal of a strong economy, not everyone being a wage slave to corporate masters. That's just new age slavery.

Dude, 3% increase year-over-year barely covers inflation... Trump's impact on the economy has been positive... but for all the wrong reasons, the stock market boomed when he got elected not because of investor confidence in his abilities to steer the American economy, but because most investors knew corporate tax cuts were part of his platform, they knew large American corporations would pay even less corporate tax than they previously were before he was elected. On top of all that, arguably the most archaic issue in the states - a lack of a national healthcare system - continues to dog the average, everyday wage earner, and remains completely unaddressed. Although median wages have increased, so has the number of Americans with absolutely no health insurance at all. Although less individuals are using social welfare programs (like food stamps) - Trump has persistently talked about cutting aid to these programs... of course usage is going to go down if you cut a program, that's like saying (as an example): "Hey, the number of youth offenders in Manitoba Liquor Marts is 0 now! Boy the police are doing a good job with that!" ... In this instance, we're giving credit to police for something they aren't even responsible for (youths in liquor marts, security guards deal with that). You’re certainly the most likely person here to spot a lie since you spew them so often and in such great volume. But it’s not a lie. It took me seconds to find a report from April with nearly 1000 younger people dying of covid in the US. If you have an ounce of class you will apologize to me. If you have two ounces you’ll go away for good.

Everyone knows that covid isn't the most deadly thing out there.... but it spreads like wildfire and no one has immunity it. This is why we take these steps we do. You can get a huge death toll when things are left to spread unchecked. Hell parts of the US tried to take steps and it's still out of control. Bottom line, to hell with the selfish assholes who just want to get everyone sick and let fate decide if they're the unlucky ones who have to die. It is reprehensible behaviour honestly. Why risk lives when we don't need to?
