Obama pens an essay on the situation today: "Throughout American history, it’s only in response to protest that the political system has even paid attention to marginalized communities," he said. "But eventually, aspirations have to be translated into specific laws and institutional practices — and in a democracy, that only happens when we elect government officials who are responsive to our demands." "The bottom line is this: if we want to bring about real change, then the choice isn’t between protest and politics. We have to do both," "Change would be most impactful at the local level. The elected officials "who matter most" when it comes to reforming police departments and the criminal justice system work as state, city and county officials." Voter turnout in these local races is usually pitifully low, especially among young people — which makes no sense given the direct impact these offices have on social justice issues, not to mention the fact that who wins and who loses those seats is often determined by just a few thousand, or even a few hundred, votes,." Think about the specific changes we want for their local criminal justice system and police department. The more specific the demands are, the harder it will be for elected officials to just "pay lip service." “It’s natural to wish for life ‘to just get back to normal’ as a pandemic and economic crisis upend everything around us, but we have to remember that for millions of Americans, being treated differently on account of race is tragically, painfully, maddeningly ‘normal’5 points -

Ive got to be honest, these morons using All Lives Matter are really aggravating me. Saw someone I know (and like) was posting on FB about how Scott Hall (wrestler) deleted his account because he posted ALM and was attacked and this guy claims he uses it to mean we should all stick together but now he will be attacked for doing something nice. WTF people. It knowingly diminishes the cause, the protests and what black people are feeling. Stop it. Because, no All Lives dont matter right now...thats the point. Ugh. An awful lot of white people are stupid, insensitive and suffer that "subtle" racism. Get off social media for an hour and reflect.3 points -

I don't want to speak for Tracker but "understanding why someone or a group of people might get violent" is different than "being ok with violence". Our justice system takes into account why people may have performed a violent act (notwithstanding that police target minorities for arrests), but our economic system ignores why segments of society are forced into desperate situations that sometimes have violent outcomes.3 points -

I don’t like to throw around the word “racist” lightly - there are many forms of ignorance that can be displayed that are inappropriate but do not make the person an out-and-out racist. But I will say this strongly to Brandon. I have found a lot of his comments here offensive to me personally. I won’t assume to speak for the masses. I have shrugged them off so far as ill-informed in my opinion, but since he has decided to declare another poster as “racist” for making generalities, I invite him and everyone else to re-visit his own posts where he talks about a “culture” that he seems to ascribe to only one visible minority, and ask if this does not meet his very own definition? Either the definition of “racism” proposed by his last message needs to be discounted as incorrect, or he needs to read-think the toxicity of his own statements if the label of “racist” is going to be thrown about.2 points -

It has been said that the reason that America has become so polarized is that between Faux News, the GOP and now Trump, the neo-fascists and racists have become comfortable in coming out into the light. The mainstream media is not blameless. They have bent over backwards to present opposing points of view, even when one of them is as diseased as the alt-right, giving more legitimacy to who were fringe lunatics before. I cannot see how this malevolent genie can be put back in the bottle.2 points -

No new probable cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) were reported in Manitoba on Monday, leaving the provincial total at 295. Dr. Brent Roussin, chief provincial public health officer, said there are 10 active cases, 278 people have recovered and there are currently no hospitalizations. Seven people have died from the virus. Dr. Roussin revealed the single new case announced over the weekend was a temporary foreign worker from the Southern Health Region and was travel-related. Two cases that were identified last week have been linked to two truck drivers who had multiple routes through the United States. "Certainly it is important to know that these individuals took all the right action," Roussin said. "They became symptomatic soon after returning, they were self-isolated and tested, and there is unlikely to be any significant contacts in the community in this regard."2 points -

This is why people are protesting. ******* cops tripping on their power. It's too celebrated. I have even heard stories from people I know who became cops boasting about the liberties they've gotten to take when placing people in custody. Hell we saw it in Lethbridge with the cops busting up the lady in a storm trooper costume. You get too many school yard bullies with no career options but cops and they continue their bullying behaviour.2 points -

Don't mean to pick on you Tracker but this story has some wires crossed and the presentation of facts is important, these photos look like they were possibly taken from a re-enactment of the event as colour photog. was not at all common in 1955, even less so in 1944. Emmett Till 14 was kidnapped from his Uncle's home in Mississippi in 1955, executed and dumped in the Tallahatchie River for allegedly flirting with a white shop-keeper who later recanted specific details of her testimony in an interview granted in 2008. This was not a govt. sanctioned execution, although sure enough a jury of their peers let the accused parties walk. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmett_Till George Stinney was a 14 year old boy executed by electric chair by the State of South Carolina in 1944 for allegedly murdering two girls, ages 7 and 11. His conviction was overturned in 2014, 70 years after he was executed when a court ruled that he had not received a fair trial. Stephen King was inspired by this case to write his book “The Green Mile”, which was made into a movie released in 1999. https://lifenroots.com/en/the-real-story-behind-the-green-mile-you-will-cry/2 points -

So you are just willing to ignore the root cause? The bullies did nothing wrong? They did nothing to make the kid feel like that was his only resort? If you don't address the cause of the issue you will keep having the same problems. Fact is black people are still heavily discrimated against in the USA. The deck is stacked against minorities. Poverty begets poverty which begets criminal behavior. It is a vicious cycle that needs to be broken.2 points

Not at all, I'm saying two wrongs don't make a right. Violence is never the answer. I'm saying tracker thinking people going all vigilante (or the criminal version of this) is unacceptable. His opinions differ from mine, I don't believe that if you were to be in Minneapolis right now walking down the street minding your business that a black guy has the "right" to kick the **** out of you just because you are white and he's black and he's mad. To me that's not right. Solves nothing and you (being innocent) should not become a victim for no reason. He is saying yes Unknown poster because he's white should be beaten up and robbed because some bad cop did a stupid thing and somehow everyone should suffer.1 point

Michael Gallagher - infectious disease physician COVID-19 has changed everything. The way we live, the way our kids learn, the way we work. It has trashed the economy, exploded unemployment, and harmed businesses, many of them, sadly, beyond repair. But here’s the deal: it’s real and it’s here and it’s still spreading. Do you want to know why medical people, real medical people, not some crackpot quacks and kooks with a YouTube account or Facebook page, are taking this seriously? Because it’s serious. And we’re serious people when it comes to people’s health and their lives. Yes, it mostly kills at-risk populations (the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions) but it also kills perfectly healthy people with no prior diagnoses and we don’t know why. I’m so tired of people acting like there’s information that’s being cooked up or withheld. You know why there’s lots of gaps in the information? Because we’re still learning about this virus every day. It’s new. It’s never been seen. How it acts, how it spreads, why it does the things it does is all new and we’re learning on the fly. Stop mistaking genuine lack of information for misinformation or withheld information. The numbers: this one sticks in my craw like no other. “I heard they didn’t die from COVID-19, they died from a heart attack but they were positive so they called it COVID-19 to boost the numbers and scare people.” Stop. It. You know how many people died specifically from AIDS? Zero. AIDS patients die from pneumonia or some other illness normal, healthy people fight off because the AIDS virus destroyed their immune system and they couldn’t fight off the infection. But at the heart of it, they died because of AIDS. The coronavirus attacks the respiratory system. The respiratory system is, in case you didn’t know, pretty important to sustaining life. It also has a huge impact on how other organ systems, like the heart, work. Guess what, when your lungs don’t work because they’ve basically filled with brick mortar because the virus is attacking them, that puts a bit of a strain on your ticker and very well can cause it to fail. So unless you have a basic understanding of or want to understand how interconnected organ systems are and how the body fundamentally functions: stop. End Part 11 point -

Even the man who implemented the strategy for Sweden is not convinced of that statement you so confidently assert. And it would appear that not locking down hasn't spared their economy either. And herd immunity isn't even progressing like they thought. So any other mistruths you want to offer, or are you just spouting unwarranted opinions with no factual underpinning to them? https://www.npr.org/2020/05/25/861923548/stockholm-wont-reach-herd-immunity-in-may-sweden-s-chief-epidemiologist-says Here's another pair of recent articles on the "herd immunity" lack of success. And your plan was to do nothing, somehow identify and isolate everyone who's vulnerable, and then wait for herd immunity to develop. This is a new virus - how could officials KNOW FOR SURE who the most vulnerable people were? Some pandemics have killed many young and healthy individuals. But there was no way to predict (in the early going, maybe not even now) precisely who the vulnerable segments of the population were. You point to some segments as being statistically insignificant - but you forget that those statistics were not available a few months ago. The Spanish flu is the classic example of what can happen if you go the herd immunity route - most governments in 2020 just could not take that risk.1 point -

The times were much different back then with censorship being so strong on radio, tv & movies. Material by all comedians was tame by comparison to today. No surprise after what is allowed today that the themes back then would be looked upon as tame or boring. Some things about Wayne & Shuster are worth mentioning: Performed in Britain for Allied Troops in WW2. First comedians to ever perform on Canadian television. Had their own show & comedy specials on CBC TV & radio. Had their own summer sitcom on CBS TV produced by Jack Benny in 1962. Were voted the Most Popular Comedy Group in America in 1961 & 62. Appeared 67 times on the Ed Sullivan Show the most by any performers (at an unheard of $7,500 an appearance). Frank Shuster said that it was more like 58 times. Sullivan, famous for cutting acts out of the show or limiting performances to just a few minutes at the last minute was under contract to never do that to them. No other performers had that clause written into their contracts with Sullivan. One comedy skit in 1958 called Blood On My Toga was 12 minutes long which again was unheard of at the time. Despite numerous offers from American television networks to develop a comedy series, W & S never left Canada preferring to center their work out of this country. How much bigger would they have been had they moved to the States? Were very popular in Britain performing various times on television, comedy shows & clubs. (Probably from their time entertaining Allied troops in WW2). No question, W & S helped pave the road for other future Canadian comics to the US & internationally.1 point
