Anytime I see people whining about left-wing bias in "mainstream" media, I roll my eyes so hard it hurts. If the Con's want to get elected, they have to find a way to come back toward the middle, rather than going further to the right. Staunch social conservatism just seems so anti-Canadian. Canada has always been a (relatively speaking) socially progressive nation. There is nothing wrong with tightening budgets a bit and being smart with our money, but when you start talking about anti-abortion stuff, and not accepting Pride Day and things like that......that's just so wildly un-Canadian, to me.5 points -

The Cup is won by the players and coaches, they have worked to earn their right to have their name engraved on it. Even if it is just a "fan base", I see no reason why I should get to immortalize myself on a part of the Cup as a fan. Already have my name in the concrete paving stone in front of IGF, so they have honoured my fandom in that fashion. JMO.3 points -

O'Toole ran to the right when the campaign started. He's far more moderate than Scheer was. He's from Montreal and holds and important Toronto seat. I think you can expect a very Bay Street focused platform from the CPC. But, holy geez, Scheer whining about the left wing media? They have the Sun, National Post and Globe and Mail as mainstream right wing publications and he thinks the right gets bad press? Yikes.3 points -

It has nothing to do with being on one's computer chair. It's common sense as far as proper training goes, and it's clear this particular LEO was either poorly trained or not trained at all. He flubbed this incident completely and now an innocent man is recovering in hospital due to his recklessness and outright stupidity. He was within arm's reach of the subject the entire duration of that video. He had strength in numbers with a colleague being right next him. You don't wait multiple seconds to let an actively resistant subject return to a vehicle with unknown contents. You holster your weapon, or lower it at the very least, and draw a different intervention option, or utilize a control technique like a takedown, either with the assistance of your colleague or not. I'm not sure what his verbal intervention was like during the incident but it was obviously ineffective. This LEO demonstrated his lack of knowledge in his job, in a situation where he's required to make decisions to protect the public good. He failed miserably. The blame is not 50/50 - at all. The LEO could've and should've handled it differently. This is a cut and dry case of excessive use of force.2 points -
It’s actually remarkable that month after month after month, we still have incidences like this latest one in Wisconsin. With all the publicity. With all the negativity directed at Police Officers, whether they’re complicit, innocent, or directly involved, some still chose to let the outlaw in them overcome what little sense they have left. I mean, what the fcuk’s the matter with your brains? You CANNOT shoot an unarmed person in the back, when there’s no resistance and in front of his children. I cannot think of a penalty that fits this kind of crime. Its just unfathomable.2 points

It's beginning to look like they'll shut down Maple Leaf - with phase 1 restrictions back in place in PMH I know I've said this before: but how do you then go ahead and open schools? All the minister does is have a news conference telling us what we already know. Edit: I just heard this directly from an MLA. They believe it's safe to open schools because most cases are isolated in communal clusters. SMH.2 points -

You'd think by now these candidates would have actual, thoughtful, concrete solutions to all these problems in Ottawa caused by the Leftist Bogeyman since 2015. This supposedly prosperous vision for Canada remains virtually unknown or at best, very unclear. Scheer suggesting the CPC is "in great shape" smacks of delusion to me. His comments about challenging the leftist elites, the mainstream media and its left-wing bias were also comical and very Trumpesque. His departure should be seen as a win and O'Toole would benefit distancing himself and the party from such a tired, petulant, and ridiculous narrative. All of which is to say nothing of the technical issues yesterday. What happened is a bad look in itself for a party who prides itself on managerial competence.2 points -

Last year, Canada’s Big Telcos asked the government to block a key CRTC decision that will make Internet prices more affordable for millions of Canadians. You joined over 150,000 Canadians who spoke up, and told the government you deserved lower internet and cell phone bills. Bad news: the Government caved to pressure from the Big Telcos and Internet prices are already on the rise. Shouldn’t the government look out for your interests, not Big Telco profits? Of course it is a cash grab. Not that there is anything wrong with that per se. If a league finds new ways to generate income and there is fan interest, more power to them. And the league certainly needs a cash infusion. The Bombers for example generated $11.5 million on ticket sales alone last year, 32% of their income. Their game day, concessions, and merch sales were another 24%. All those totals will essentially dry up this year. So they need the cash badly to keep the operation going (paying staff who were not laid off is just one example). But here is where I have a problem with it. The Bombers are community owned, so their books are public. They made a $3.5 million profit last year, which is in line with their 5 years average. Saskatchewan and Edmonton (the other 2 community owned teams) each lost money - the Riders $200,000 (essentially the cost of their Grey Cup bid and prep) and the "let's not call them THAT anymore" 's lost $1.1 million. We have no idea about the other 6 teams, but each club ponied up $680,000 to keep the Als running when they had no owner, so they were $5.45 million in the glue while they were rudderless. The big issue for me is those 5 or 6 privately owned teams (honestly have no idea where Montreal is at these days). All the private owners (David Braley in BC, Bob Young in Hamilton, MLSE in Toronto, Calgary Flames through Murray Edwards in Calgary, and Roger Greenberg in Ottawa) are all in the $1 billion + net worth range at least (MLSE alone is worth $4 billion). They won't open their books, but they were unable or unwilling to pony up their own money to keep the league operating this season, and now the CFL wants $400 from each fan to generate revenue. If the owners are making money off their teams (and the Bombers have shown in the last 5 years that you can generate profits off of your team) then it really sucks that they capsized the year and the league now want the fans to pay to keep it afloat after the Government handout failed. If they are not making money by and large, then it is time to scrap the current version of the league and figure out a financially viable way to run it, or bury it forever. In either circumstance, don't run to the fans first for a cash grab. Get your own house in order, then you can soak us with ticket prices, but at least we get a little entertainment for our spent money, and not just a meaningless engraving on a plaque.1 point -

It's on the LEO to control the subject and deescalate the situation. For all we know, the LEO wasn't even issuing verbal commands and was just pointing his weapon right in the subject's face. But there's no use playing the what if game, so why even go there? A LEO's duty is to the public. To protect the public and serve it by upholding the rule of law. In this instance, he didn't do his job because he let a subject continue to be actively resistant and walk away from him. He had ample time to neutralize the subject and properly and effectively deescalate the situation. He didn't manage the situation and now a man has seven bullet wounds because of that negligent incompetence. There's no onus on anyone but the LEO here; it's his duty and his job to be the law. I'm not sure what's so difficult for you to understand about that. If you're going to make excuses for the LEO, why not do the same for the subject who got shot at point blank range?1 point -
That argument and viewpoint doesn't wash any more, Had they shot him after seeing a gun and it pointed at them, then that's reasonable. To shoot the guy based on the fact he might have had a gun plays right into the rhetoric of racists. If it was a white guy, would they have assumed he was going for a gun, and shot them? From everything we know about this situation was that this guy was trying t break up a fight between two women, and was trying to get his three kids away from the situation. Shooting based on the info we have and what we've seen, no one can say this was justified.1 point

This just reeks of cash-grab to me... every aspect of it just seems such a gimmicky way of doing things... the fact that the certificate of authenticity is digital and I can have an 'augmented reality' of the Grey Cup in my home? So... $400 for a bad photoshop and a PDF? Yeah...hard pass. The missus and I already got our photo (which was free, by the way) with the real Grey Cup, went to the game when they won... oh and speaking of the Grey Cup... just wanted to point out this gimmick costs MORE than an actual ticket to the Grey Cup?1 point -

There are different stages in denial. Trump is wavering between shock and disbelief. We’ve seen the angry. We’ve seen the bargaining, but we haven’t seen any guilt. He’s incapable of that. So, it’s full speed ahead to win, at ANY cost, because, as you say, he knows he’s in big trouble. Before, it was all for his own personal glory. Now, it’s the realization that what he faces is not a hoax.1 point -

I came to Canada in 2006. Dont know anything about football or CFL. Basketball is the main sports back in my native country. But I like sports since I was a kid. I remember watched a Steelers game on my uncle’s cable when I was young. Probably that was mid-80’s. Then in 2007 when we got our own house, one late afternoon I was looking for a sports show on TV to watch and saw this game WPG vs SSK. It was the Grey Cup game. It was a good game early on and Stegall, Roberts and Glenn all stood out for me. Unfortunately they lost the game. But been a Bombers fan ever since.1 point
