SOme welcomed good news! Trump ignoring covid precautions because it projects weakness and he has to project immense strength all the time because he is alpha and so on and so on.... gets covid and gets taken out of the race with a month left in the race... Biden following all precautions and respecting the cdc guidelines for covod- gets jeered at from the right and alpha orange man as being weak and afraid... doesn't get covid and continues on the campaign trail... There is a parable here somewhere... let's hope it has a happy ending with a good moral...

I cancelled my Xmas dinner already. "But, shouldn't we wait to see how things are?" "No, I don't want to risk having your parents over at all. Ever. What if they get sick?" This situation may last several years in my house. Can never be too safe!!

True, which is why we've adapted as we've learned more about the virus. We've been promoting safely reopening and trying to reduce the risk. Not really with schools, of course, we're just throwing them into the classroom and hoping. And, apparently, our gov't is willing to shutdown some things but not bars. But, we still don't know enough about the long-term health effects. That, to me, could really hurt the economy.

Sweden didn't take a long term approach, they took a gamble. And, it's been a failure with more unnecessary deaths. Herd immunity works with a vaccine. Not without.

    Covid-19

So let's talk about seniors care facilities.... they're locked down tighter than a drum... yet they still have maintenance contractors going in regularly... like why? Put that **** off if it isn't critical. I had to go into a place recently for some work that really wasn't critical and yes they have a questionnaire to fill out every day but really, nothing stops people from lying on them. Just seems entirely too risky given the risk factors for the residents.

Time does not stand still. It feels odd that it's closing but it really, really needed to. I hope that they can preserve that beautiful building. I was part of an exploratory group that looked at converting the building (upper floors) into a new venture. It would have been really neat but would have cost too much and I don't think the investors (tax paying public) would have been too keen.

We also need better, faster test results. Want the economy back? Get people back to work after possible exposures with quick tests and test results. 5 days is too long for people who work in the front lines and those in the service industry.

I can't even talk about bars and restaurants without becoming enraged lol. Health officials are all saying "Most of the spread in WPG is via bars and restaurants" yet we continue to operate as is...AND I can't have my family over for dinner (not that I actually want to, but the point is still there) because it's too dangerous. The way it's being handled is truly showing how horrible our "leadership" is.

I’d like to see your sources.. Sweden is a completely different society than ours. They voluntarily had a few lockdowns because the people there seem to be more aware of why they should. They’d did have restrictions as to size of group meetings and they did have a higher mortality rate than their neighbours. Were they right in their path? Who’s to say? The economic impact is still debatable but that’s the same in many countries. Quote: “Despite the more relaxed approach, only 7.3% of people in Stockholm had developed the antibodies needed to fight the disease by late April -- well below the 70-90% needed for herd immunity.” - New Scientist Sweden is not the shining example many want it to be, but I herd they have good meatballs. 🙂 Canada - total deaths...9316 total cases - 160,265 = 0.0581 Sweden - total deaths...5893 total cases - 93,615 = 0.0629

True. The only thing they need to gut are some interior, non load-bearing walls. Pretty simple stuff. The actual structure is remarkable. For the purposes we were exploring, it would have had some heavy duty requirements and this structure would have met them.

I have been extremely fortunate that my family and friends have not been directly affected by the virus, from a health point of view. Many have experienced financial implications but, so far, health has not been impacted. There have now been two incidents this week that have potentially exposed my grandmother, in a long-term seniors residence, and at my children at school. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. Wear your masks, please.

What is kind of engaging about this... For weeks trump supporters and the right wing propaganda arm of the party, have been floating the "Biden is going to "catch" covid and dodge the debates and hide out in his basement until the election" conspiracy. Now trump is exactly going to do that and those same fuckers are going to gain and preen about how tough trump is and how brave he is and ram their noses to far up his arse... Gah, maddening!

They took a long term approach that looked at the overall health of their society... it’s not some ridiculous economy over lives as is portrayed They actually made the same mistakes as us in terms of long term care homes - and accidentally elevated their death rate - but regardless it is very interesting to watch their curve remaining flat and their death rate at or near zero - herd immunity has become a dirty word but Sweden may have achieved it will find out this October for sure But skyrocketing overdose rates are fine - because those are different lives... got it

Had the exact same feeling when we were home a few weeks ago. We went to the Bombers Store to buy stuff, and as we were walking back to the car, I stopped at the fence and looked in at the empty stadium. A sickening feeling. I would go for CFL ball 12 months of the year, but right now, especially, it's tough......

The CFL needs to stop trying to charge premium prices for their product. I'm a huge CFL fan and I'll pay a lot more than most people to see games but cripes at least in Calgary they are pricing themselves out of being an affordable family outing unless you want the crappiest seat in the house.

My issue with Ambrosie, Cohen, etc, etc, etc, is that none of them have made real efforts to grow the next generation of fans. Individual teams have their own promotions and whatnot, and the CFL has had some partnerships with the Family Channel but nothing sustained and focused. It's fine to try to attract International viewers but there is a whole generation of Canadians that does not care about the CFL. Never mind the new immigrants who are here and are interested in new activities. Grow the game at home. Invest and focus on making the CFL relevant and fun for youth.

    Around The NHL 2019/2020

I agree and I think that they would be crazy to trade him. I wouldn't touch him or Sheif. Selanne all over again. If they were going to, they could get a prospect and D man (plus a lot else, I would hope). Since the team is ready to win now, top forwards, top goalie, but lacking depth at the back, a D man could help them win next year. This assumes that they can't sign any D man of value next month. And, our window to win the Stanley Cup did close last year when we lost three starting D Men on the right side. It can be quickly re-opened again with another quality D man or two or three.

  47. The one thing I don’t get from the local TSN1290 media (and I sense the majority of the “Laine trade” talk is solely a media creation rather than them actually quoting sources) is that they keep saying the Jets have a 2-3 year window to win a Stanley Cup, which I think is nonsense. Their top 5 forwards aside from Laine (Wheeler, Scheifele, Connor, Ehlers) are locked in for 4 more years each minimum, as is Hellebuyck, and their top d-man Morissette is here for 7. And team windows always seem to be short-changed. How many times did we hear that the Caps window was closed before they won, or the Sharks before they made the final, or the Pens after the 2009 Cup win, or Boston after the 2013 Cup loss (you get the picture). Laine is still an RFA after next year’s contract is up, so we have him for 3 years minimum right now. Don’t move him unless we clearly win the trade from a “right now” perspective, otherwise, take the $11 million plus from Kulikov and Byfuglien that is off the books and get a serviceable centre and d-man.

  49. So now my 3 best, and I’ll flip the script with the similar 3 types of wins: 1. The “how did we win this” moment. Opposite of the dominant team that laid an egg, this is the underdog that found a way, and although we’ve seen comeback wins out of nowhere in random games (none more memorable than Milt’s Miracle in Edmonton after we fumbled the game away 15 seconds earlier, which falls at #2 for this category), this type of win is more fitting for one amazing end to an otherwise mediocre season. The 1988 Grey Cup is my happiest win of all the Bomber Cups. Too young to feel emotional about anything from the 1960’s and earlier. ‘84 and ‘90 we were expected to win and did so dominantly. 2019 was such a cathartic release of all the weight of 29 years of futility that I was more relieved than elated when they finally won it (much more outwardly happy watching it now than I was on game day). But ‘88 was such an up and down year, many fans had quit on the team (witness the record low turnout for the semi playoff vs Hamilton, yep, I was there in the stands! Immortalize those names on a Grey Cup base) and the whole game against BC and Dunigan and just praying they could hold on against that juggernaut offence, and Murphy carrying the offence, and Kennard clutch with all the field goals, and that incredible defence, and Cameron kicking the snot out of the ball into the wind, and that once in a lifetime INT at the end? Pure joy to watch unfold at my Grey Cup party with friends. 2. The “anti-humiliation” win: So rather than the bad team at it’s lowest depth of despair, I did not want to think of the dominant team that laid waste to a weaker opponent as the flip side. Those are great spectacle but not for me the stuff of “best moment ever”. And I have seen plenty of the good side of blowouts - 58-2 over the NFL Alouettes, a whole lot of wins in 1984, especially Reaves’ 4 TDS and 220 yards over Ottawa in a 65-25 mauling and the 20-3 defensive domination of BC, Matt’s 713 game, Milt’s 4 for 4 game on 75th anniversary day vs BC, and the 68-14 dismantling of Hamilton after a team mutiny (followed by the Jets beating the Leafs 4-2 in a Winnipeg sports double header I got to witness in person with my dad for both - best birthday ever). All great, but for me I remember the fleeting joy of a wretched team that for one brief moment lifted away the storm clouds (kind of like that moment in “The Prefect Storm“ where they hit the eye and see sun, and for a few seconds they think they’ve survived, only to be crushed by a 100 foot wave one minute later). 1998. 0-10. Yes, 0-10, on the heels of a stunningly bad 1997 team that won only 4 games. Worse in ‘98. We were losing games by an average of 2 touchdowns Trailing Saskatchewan 28-10 going into the 4th quarter of the Winnipeg half of the September back-to-back (6 years before it got it’s Banjo Bowl moniker). It got so bad that the Riders line up for the kickoff after a TD and drill the ball into Wade Miller’s face on a line drive kick 10 yards away and recover the onside kick. Miller is crying his eyes out on the sidelines, such is the abject despair on this putrid team, I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP! The President of this team was reduced to tears in the middle of a game. And then Troy Kopp strolls on to the field and we rally like I have never seen before, and we win 36-35 in the final seconds and CanadInns explodes with joy, relief, pure giddiness, and a pent up rage and frustration. And the fans en masse spontaneously decide to rush the field in celebration, me amongst that throng. To find happiness amidst such usual despair Is one of my all-time greatest memories. 3. The “heights of victory” win, my counterpoint to the “depths of despair” loss. But again, not the dominant team that won as expected - even though the 1984 West Final might fit this category This is the win that just pushed you to renew all faith in how great things could and would be, the moment that re-energized your fandom. Stuff like the Clements trade, the emergence of Khari-Milt in 2001, perhaps the Don Jonas era for older fans. And although the whole 2019 playoff run stands out, and vanquishing Calgary on the road and the Grey Cup itself are huge happy moments, I pick the West Final for 3 reasons. Most importantly, I was there, and seeing it live always adds to the drama of a game, especially a playoff game in hostile territory against our biggest rival. Secondly, the last 4 minutes of that contest were unbelievable, and everyone on both fan bases had their hearts in their throats, so to come out on top is so sweet (I can only imagine Rider fans feel like I did after the loss to Baltimore in 1994). And the players running to the stands to high five every single Bomber fan who hung around to cheer was just icing on the cake. I re-played the entire CJOB broadcast, including pre- and post-game, on the drive home. Most wonderful 6 hour car ride of my life. Shudder to think how that drive would have been if they had lost. My favourite in-person game of all time.
