Coney Barrett, like Anton Scalia before her, believes in an “originalist” interpretation of the Constitution, meaning she’ll apply the laws as the original framers intended, and not adapt her reasoning for any change in policy, adaptation to modern day thinking, and such. Forget for a moment that the Constitution itself allows for (and intended to have) Amendments as a way of self-correcting over time to recognize changes in society, and focus on just this one issue: the original framers lived in a society that did not recognize either black people or women as equals (or even people based on the legal definition of such) the former allowed to be subjected to ownership by others, and the latter not given rights such as voting or working to name but 2. So if she believes in that doctrine, then she must admit that per the original framers’ intent she cannot be allowed to sit on the very court that would not have allowed women to practice law or be a candidate for a judgeship. But hey, if you want to start with that “originalist” mindset, let’s not apply 2nd Amendment logic to anything beyond muskets. Oh I forgot, Republicans and Trump defenders alike don’t worry themselves with inconsistency and hypocrisy, they just demand strict adherence to the rules when it suits their interests and conveniently shrug it off with What-about-isms when it boxes them in to a morally inescapable losing argument any time they want to break those same rules because it no longer helps them.

I would think this was a very basic question to answer and I don’t see why she felt the need to duck it. Then, she wouldn’t even say that she thinks presidents should commit to the peaceful transfer of power. These are softball questions and her evasive answers send out warning signals to the populace, but of course, these are the kind of responses the Republicans want. Credibility shot.

My oldest was set to play flag football in spring, youngest soccer. Both were expected to play basketball this fall along with indoor soccer (or something else). I bought a basketball net for them this year, which got good use. And, when the snow flies, I'll make them shovel and tell them it's training for something.

They're going to confirm someone with very little experience, who refuses to answer the simplest questions about law to a lifetime appointment position? When the GOP is decimated next month, they'll deserve it. And when the Dems expand the court because it's so overwhelmingly representative of the alt-right, Republicans will deserve that too. This is a "democracy" that actively tries to get as few people to vote as possible, where hours long lines to vote are common place, where the president encourages his armed supporters to "monitor" the elections and for racist terrorist cells to "stand by" for when he loses.

I've had the pizza burger three times, twice it was great and once it was a terrible soggy mess. When done right it's good but very heavy. They need to bring back the Cactus Cut Nachos.... it was cactus cuts with cheese, bacon, green onions on top. So good (not healthy at all).

Those were not “trap” questions...pretty basic, and safe when answered. Senator @amyklobuchar “just asked Judge Barrett whether it's illegal under federal law to intimidate voters at the polls”. 👁‍🗨How about “the peaceful transfer of power”? “Coney Barrett won't even say that she thinks presidents should commit to the peaceful transfer of power” -Aaron Rupar Judging by a lot of her answers, it could be said that she didn’t commit to giving answers that could come back to haunt her. Not once did I think she was unsure of what she was doing.

But, there is one silver lining here: It's really a mix-bag of nuts right now... sheesh.

Judges can get removed if they have perjured themselves. The “nothing” answer is the safe way to avoid that. And to be fair, expecting her to know every statute off the top of her head is a stretch. Now logically, common sense would dictate that the answer is likely a “yes”. Now, if one ants to question her credentials, point out that she was a law clerk for 2 years, only practiced law for 3, has been an academic for 15, and was appointed to an appeals court for 3 years before this nomination. So 6 years practical legal experience and gets appointed to the highest court on the land.

It is unfortunate, but expected. If these trials didn't come up with any hiccups, I would be ver suspect in the safety of the vaccine- the large clinical trials are working as intended. A 1 in 2000 chance to develope a debilitating or fatal side effect would have devastating consequences of it slipped through the clinical trial process. Its a good thing that they are investigating these "mysterious illnesses".

After the GOP take their victory lap after the confirmation of ACB they will soon realize that they are in deep in the coming election and with no chance to win will turn to steal, the Democrats need to get all their supporters out to vote and make the this election over early, win Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and most importantly Florida then it's over and then they can look forward to stream rolling the Republicans.

    Covid-19

The problem with Dougald's quote is that is patently false. Business as usual? The government has reduced capacity, mandated masks shortened the operating hours and is looking to regulate noise levels as well. They are trying everything they can to keep people employed while trying to balance public health. They have said time and time again that it is safe to go out IF you follow all the recommended public health directives. It will come to the point that people follow along and these business will be able to stay open under these guidelines or they will be forced to close. I still feel restaurant dining with family is safe, not sure I would want to go hang out in a lounge with 9 others that I only see occasionally and don't know what they do the rest of the time.

This is just me but I think people in general won't take Covid seriously until schools get closed down again. That seems to jar people into thinking this is serious. They stay open while health officials & politicians lecture us constantly. Yeah, tough spot for you & your family. Glad we didn't have to fo through this when our kids were growing up.

This is normal across the board... I watched the CBC program and was surprised that they didn't bring up that everyone does this. It reminded me of the car graveyards where they have perfectly working vehicles just sitting and rotting away rather then selling them off at a cheaper price in fear of diminishing the brand value.

    Covid-19

NEW Last updated: October 13, 2020 Public health officials advise the 35th death due to COVID-19 have been reported, a male in his 70s from the rural east district in Southern Health. This was a previously announced case. The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 3.5 per cent and 124 new cases of the virus have been identified as of 9:30 a.m. bringing the total number of cases in Manitoba to 2,779. Of the 124 news cases, 26 were identified Monday, 83 were identified Sunday, and 15 were identified Saturday due to a backlog of cases. Today’s data shows: 16 cases in the Interlake-Eastern health region; 1 case in the Northern health region; three cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region; nine cases in the Southern Health - Santé Sud health region; and 95 cases in the Winnipeg health region. The data also shows: 1,248 active cases and 1,496 individuals have recovered from COVID-19; there are 28 people in hospital and five people in intensive care; and the number of deaths due to COVID-19 is 35. Laboratory testing numbers show 2,383 tests were completed Friday, 3311 were completed Saturday, 2049 were completed Sunday and 2188 were completed yesterday bringing the total number of lab tests completed since early February to 213,669. Case investigations continue and if a public health risk is identified, the public will be notified. As I see it not all new case happen in 1 day, lets wait and see what happens in the coming weeks to see if mask wearing and earlier closings will have any effect.
