RIP Chris Schultz

Good guy. I'll always remember the Cup run in '91 and what a (literally) big part of the team he was. Charitable too, his work for Purolator Tackle Hunger has helped tens of thousands in need. RIP Schultzie.9 points -

Schultz’s death is gutting news to me. Always liked his approach on the TSN panel, and he was one of the originals who helped create the TSN football brand and build the Friday Night Football panel and phenomenon. Not a stretch to say that the success of that experiment went a long way to establishing the TSN CFL partnership and grew the popularity and exposure of the league in a big way. Was sorry to see him depart the airwaves, and very saddened by this news today.4 points -
It took me a while but eventually, I learned to appreciate Schultz' analysis. It was actually his weekly spot on 1290 that helped. RIP.4 points

My favorite line always from Schultz was who ever scores points more in this one will be the winner.3 points

Time knows no master and we cannot halt or delay it. My mother in law died a few years ago at age 99- two months short of her 100th birthday. She often said that everyone she knew in her adult life as peers had already died, and most of her familiar community and church had changed over time where she felt almost an alien in her own world- two of her children had died also. We are not permanent residents here. We are passing through and all of the accumulated losses are meant to let us know that our days, like the days of all those who have come before and all those who will come after, are numbered. A novice monk asked his master which was more important- the journey or the destination. The master replied," Neither. It is who we journey with." I have come to see that it is not the length of our days that matters but the quality of those days. May you be well and at peace.3 points

Ireland/Ulster is a wonderful example of what can happen when there is sufficient good will and enough pain and disgust over the past. There is a parallel between Ulster and the US to a degree. In both cases, what may have started out as legitimate protests over real grievances got coopted by essentially criminals who used and are using the veneer of protest to both exacerbate and profit from them to increase their power and wealth. In Ireland, when enough people saw that the IRA had become a criminal organization, dealing in extortion, selling drugs and so forth with no real concern for people, change became possible. I do not see that awareness in America today, and a low-grade civil war and fracturing of the country is almost inevitable. A poll quoted by CNN reported that a growing percentage of moderate Americans are willing to tell the redneck states to leave. Impossible? An American seer Edgar Cayce predicted racial violence in the US but that the breaking of America would come from class warfare, and I interpret that to mean the wealthy against the poor and that gap has been growing for some 60 years. A political economist about ten years ago stated that so long as the "Communist" in Russia alternative existed to Capitalism, the rich and powerful were careful to not grind the working and middle classes. Once the USSR collapsed along with its pretend socialist government, the field was seen as clear for the 3% to begin to erode the other 97% of their incomes and political power, and that has been growing since 1989.3 points -

I always figured you could blame communisms failure on Lenin' s Vanguard Party idea. Which may be comparable to what the US has now with their 2 parties. Here in Canada we have a long history of new parties springing up both Federal and Provincal that change the political scene and the county's mindset . And don't forget what the great philosopher Shrek said " Change is good donkey " Parties like, CCF/ NDP , THE BLOC, Reform, Social Credit, the Quebec Sepratists have made huge changes to our society even when they don't hold power. The US has lost that ability to foster new ideas. It is basicly a bunch of people ( mostly old white men ) clinging on to power and wealth at any cost including the failure of their country.3 points -

Thanks for that. Sometimes this list of deaths in the RIP thread comes across as just that - a list - and it is easy to overlook that each name carries with it a memory, an impact, an influence to many of us. Always important to remember the person and not just list the name. As for a deeper understanding, this particular analysis of dealing with death and grief has always stuck with me as a pretty accurate take on things: https://www.ofieldfuneralhome.com/grief-from-the-perspective-of-an-old-man2 points -

Damn I grew up watching Dave, Matt, Chris, and Jock. It’s news like this that you really do hate to see. It was a faux pas, but my most memorable Schultz moment was I believe Michael Bishops first start for the Bombers in 2009. We won 13-12 after the Argos missed a game winning FG. Schultz went on and on about we masterfully “iced” the kicker, only we didn’t. The Argos got a procedure penalty that pushed the kick back.2 points -

I've been a history/ religion/ political buff all my life. I find it fascinating, especially the story behind everything . But when I read things like this I don't know if the US survives it. At least the US we know now. In all what's happened since November the crucial point was the vote to impeach in the Senate. They had their chance to say the country is more important than me. And they failed. They had a chance to step back, to pull their country back from the precipice and they chose power and money. I really believe they are f##ked. I suppose I should still hold out hope for them because when I grew up I would never have thought that the violence in Ireland could reach some sort of settlement . But the US has a long way to go. Crap like you just posted ( not your posting if you know what I mean ) shows just how far they need to travel.2 points -

Based on the current expected vaccine supply, all Manitobans can get their first vaccine shot by the end of June. Also possible, by the end of May. This does not include the new J&J vaccine, which they don't have a supply schedule yet.2 points -
They've turned politics into sports. You may not always like the players but you always support your "team". It's kind of gross, pathetic and definitely anti-democratic. We have it to a degree in Canada but it's not institutionalized like it is down south. There are plenty of partisans that would never vote any other way than for their "party".2 points

I'm 65 so happy to hear I'll be getting the Pfizer vaccine.2 points -
Manitoba made a similar announcement re the 4 month delay on second dose Wednesday. They weren’t quite as bold as committing to first doses by June as there has been no confirmation of dose numbers from the feds yet. Sounds like J&J will be approved by end of month. Summer travel and butts in seats at IGF is starting to sound possible again.2 points
-
So I'm not sure where exactly MB is at with their vaccine rollout, but AB announced this afternoon that, by delaying second doses, every adult will be vaccinated by the end of June. They are going to be accepting the Astra Zeneca vaccine and giving it to people under 65 starting Wednesday next week. They'll be doing 50-64 year olds over the next month or so. Things really getting going now!2 points

Reign of Terror has such an uplifting feel to it. Honestly, it should be against the law to provide anything to anyone in line. Keep everything clear and without influence. But it should be criminal is to design a system that forces anyone, and especially minorities and those vulnerable, to line up to vote. They design the system to make it difficult or impossible for minorities to vote. The GOP is a criminal organization. They are terrorists.2 points

I think I will be... I have agreed to rent out the kitchen at the south gate bar too so hopefully will have some success there. It's very difficult to plan for because although events haven't officially canceled its hard to know what they would look like if they did happen. So absolutely no certainty on what to do. The shows are what I've built my business around and have spent several years building a viable show list. That and also the arena in Brandon with the carts. So no good summer work, and no winter work Also to respond to another quote above, you're right it isn't the manitoba govts fault. It's easy for me to be bitter and angry and sometimes it is misguided. Just a very scary situation to be in and the stress levels are quite high Hope to see you Jcon, will make ya a killer burger and some fresh mini donuts friend2 points
