Four Tennessee Republicans voted against removing slavery exception from the state’s constitution Although Tennessee abolished slavery after the Civil War, an article in the state's constitution says that "slavery and involuntary servitude" are allowed for someone who has been convicted of a crime. Understandably, there's a strong push to strip that language out — but four Republicans in the Tennessee Senate have voted against removing it. The bill to remove that article from the Tennessee Constitution was sponsored by Sen. Raumesh Akbari, a Memphis Democrat who serves in the Tennessee Senate. When the bill came up for a vote, Sen. Brian Kelsey and three other Republicans voted against it. Four Tennessee Republicans voted against removing slavery exception from the state’s constitution - Alternet.org

Ho hum is the way these types of ‘bombshell’ ‘breaking news’ reports seem to land. Even stuff like the attack on Capitol Hill that happened in real time right in front of all our faces isn’t enough to say stop this madness. We’ve seen Kellyanne Conway’s ‘Alternative facts’ phrase back in 2017 gradually take complete hold of this country and is strangling the life out of it one unchecked (other than twitter shaming)blatant lie after the other.

Bombshell claim alleges FBI produced 'fake' background check on Brett Kavanaugh The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is facing stark criticism for its handling of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's background check. According to The Guardian, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-N.Y.) alleges that the bureau's investigation into Justice Kavanaugh may have been "fake." On Monday, March 15, Whitehouse penned a letter to newly-confirmed U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland as he called on him to "help facilitate 'proper oversight' by the Senate into questions about how thoroughly the FBI investigated Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearing." The background check came came after Christine Blasey Ford and several other women accused the eventual Supreme Court justice of sexual misconduct. Although Kavanaugh denied the accusers' claims, the bureau was called on to conduct a background investigation during the Senate confirmation proceedings but, at the time, some Democratic senators accused the bureau of having an incomplete background assessment. For example, two key witnesses within the case were not interviewed. Whitehouse also noted that there were a number of witnesses who wanted to have their account included "could not find anyone at the bureau who would accept their testimony and that it had not assigned any individual to accept or gather evidence." Whitehouse said, "This was unique behavior in my experience, as the Bureau is usually amenable to information and evidence; but in this matter, the shutters were closed, the drawbridge drawn up, and there was no point of entry by which members of the public or Congress could provide information to the FBI." so something called the United Football Players Association took to Twitter to say that they've been told the CFL is planning on scrapping the 2021 and 2022 seasons, and would come back as part of some joint entity with XFL after that. Immediately, CFL "insiders" (Lalji, Naylor, etc...) refuted it and said it went completely against everything they've heard. The CFL then released a statement:

Now that they'll no longer be bargaining contracts locally, their elimination was inevitable.

Carbon Tax isn't just about getting more tax dollars in the coffers, it's also about encouraging new (better?) habits like buying locally sourced materials and products, paying more for craftsmanship that lasts rather than relying on cheap/disposable crap (whether that's clothing, furniture, electronics, vehicles, construction, whatever...) There is a human cost involved in having same-day delivery, $1.79 cheeseburgers, and a new cell phone every 2 years. There are plenty of social issues that could be helped with the money a carbon tax would collect. I don't enjoy paying more in tax, but then again I'm not a big consumer and I believe we don't pay the real cost for things anyhow. The Value of Nothing by Raj Patel talks about this. Does it make sense that bananas from South America are $0.79 a pound? Imagine if everyone involved in getting a piping hot disposable cup of coffee into our hands every morning, starting with the bean farmer all the way to the fast food employee, lived relatively as good a life as the person drinking it... coffee would be a thousand dollars a cup! I'm not so naive as to think that could ever happen, and I suppose that makes me lucky because I sure do love coffee, cheeseburgers and bananas. My point being that funding research into an alternative fuel so that we can continue to exploit and consume at our current rates shouldn't be the ultimate goal. Maybe consuming less and being smarter with dwindling resources should be the objective. Like and Subscribe for more ramblings from a middle aged hippy 😛

Republican-led states had highest COVID cases and death rates: study A new study found that while states with Democratic governors suffered from higher COVID-19 incidences and fatality rates at the outset of the global pandemic, states with Republican governors suffered more severely as the COVID-19 crisis continued throughout the second half of 2020. The analysis published on Tuesday in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Medical University of South Carolina reviewed 19 COVID metrics across 50 U.S. states between Mar. 15 and Dec. 15. "From March to early June, Republican-led states had lower COVID-19 incidence rates compared with Democratic-led states," stated the study. "On June 3, the association reversed, and Republican-led states had higher incidence." The researchers noted that Republican states reached up to 1.8 times the amount of deaths in Democratic states by Aug. 5. The test positivity discrepancy peaked on June 23, when it was 1.7 times higher in Republican states than that of Democratic states. The study also theorized that the reason for these discrepancies is because Democratic-run states, namely New York, New Jersey, and California, were "home to initial ports of entry for the virus in early 2020," welcoming more people abroad who had already contracted the disease. Republican-led states had highest COVID cases and death rates: study - Alternet.org Greg Abbott bizarrely suggests Democratic election reform allows 'using cocaine to buy votes' Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) suggested over the weekend that a Democratic effort to improve access to elections would lead to "using cocaine to buy votes." During her Sunday morning program, Fox News host Maria Bartiromo asked Abbott about legislation known as H.R. 1 that aims to improve election integrity. "Before I was governor, I was the attorney general of Texas," Abbott explained. "And when the Obama administration tried doing things like this, I filed 31 lawsuits against the Obama administration. The strongest tool that we have is the litigation tool." "And when you look at some of the things that they are talking about with regard to H.R. 1, they are trying to institutionalize voter fraud in the United States of America," he continued. "They want to make mail-in ballots permanent. Everyone knows -- including Democrats in Texas -- have said that one of the easiest ways to cheat in elections is through these mail-in ballots." According to Abbott, Democrats want to "protect ballot harvesting." He then recounted an "amazing story" about people "using cocaine to buy votes" during his time as attorney general. "It was Barack Obama himself who knew about the dangers of ballot harvesting in the state of Texas," Abbott said, "because under his administration, he sent his U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas as well as the FBI to south Texas to arrest and to prosecute people who were involved in ballot harvesting that were using cocaine to buy votes through the ballot harvesting process in the state of Texas." might be hard to believe, but its true. if you want to find out about it, I can post something. here. https://ieefa.org/ieefa-update-renewables-surpass-coal-in-u-s-power-generation-throughout-the-month-of-april-2020/ "Coal’s high cost has made it increasingly one of the last fuel choices for many utilities, a trend reflected by its declining market share for electric generation: just 15.3% in April, according to preliminary EIA figures." This , below is 2019, so the advantage for renewable is larger now. cost continues to drop. "Prices per megawatt hour from electricity for coal-fired power plants range from a low of $60 to a high of $143, according to Lazard, a financial advisory firm that publishes annual estimates of the total cost of producing electricity. This is the levelized cost, which includes the cost to build, operate, fuel and maintain a power plant. Wind is significantly cheaper: Unsubsidized, levelized prices per megawatt hour of electricity from wind range from $29 to $56, according to Lazard’s most recent figures." https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2019/06/04/climate-change-coal-now-more-expensive-than-wind-solar-energy/1277637001/ Has nothing to do withn subsidies or incentives. just straight cheaper to build renewable. If you are talking about manitoba, its bringing up the rear on this, so yeah, coal might be cheaper. USA is where these figures are from.

  23. After 27 games we've reached the middle of the season so it's time for the annual mid-season review. Exceeded Expectations Ehlers - continuing his performance from the playoffs Stanley - whoda thunk we'd live to see this? Appleton - the new Roslo Lewis - a 4th line UFA that actually can play? Forbort - another good UFA signing that has saved the LHD from being utter crap Copp - started out great but fallen back lately Meeting Expectations KConn, Scheif, Wheeler, Stastny, Lowry, Perreault, Pionk, Poolman, Beaulieu, Helle, Brossy Dubois - This was a tough one. Very much flip a coin. Had signs of brilliance at times but others times I understand why Torts had problems with him. Since he has not played worse since coming here from CBJ I'll give him a pass.. Below Expectations Morrissey, DeMelo - The two guys who we thought were the best at each side may be the worst at each side. Morrissey looks injured at times. I've mentally traded him several times now. Harkins - Where is that young fellow from a year ago? Does not help that Thomson is played over him. Granted that's PaMa but that's also on Harkins. Not Worthy of a Review Niku, Vesa, Gus

coal is not cheap. Bloomberg: In most places in the U.S., most of the time, it now costs more to produce an additional kilowatt hour of electricity with coal than with any other major energy source. NPR: "Preston says that right now, coal is more expensive than natural gas, wind or solar in many parts of the country. So when demand slows, coal plants are the first to shut down."

I am bewildered as to how and why the Libs would not give money to the CFL. 1. They are asking for a loan not a handout, and not a particularly big one by federal money standards 2. The CFL is huge in western Canada, and is well liked in Ontario and Quebec so Liberal support of it could not possibly hurt them in an area they have to be desperate to try get some support in to form a majority. No chance the Cons even criticize such a move by the Liberals because their Western base would not like that. 3, The Liberals love to throw cash around, I am sure they have a 40 million dollar itch somewhere in their magic unlimited spending well that they so often rely on. 4. The Liberals want an election. No chance a Canadian institution dies just prior to them pulling the trigger on one. I fully expect that the Feds will be helping the CFL this season. It just does not make sense for them politically not to do it.

Well, this statement is BS. Canada doesn't have the infrastructure to be "oil independent" regardless of where the product goes. (this is not dissimilar to Canada's current vaccine dilemma, either) And before you piss and moan about Trudeau singlehandedly destroying Alberta's petroleum and gas industry again, rewind to 2014. That's when oil prices worldwide began to decline markedly and Alberta wasn't immune to that. This was roughly a year before Trudeau became PM. https://bta.ca/global-collapse-of-oil-prices/ https://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/industry-news/energy-and-resources/in-alberta-anxiety-grows-over-declining-oil-prices/article21122662/ https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/alberta/low-oil-prices-will-punch-huge-hole-in-alberta-budget-prentice-says/article22015643/ https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/alberta-and-the-oil-crash-1-year-later-1.3126945

With a continual downward trend in drawing power that wouldnt have happened. I think that is the best case scenario. If we got say 2 weeks of inter league play, a big multi league all star game, and a 2nd grand championship game that'd be a win for every one involved. Not to mention the potential of interleague trades and such.

No I am not talking about wasting votes. I am talking about voting for rhetoric and ending up worse. You know, like when you all voted for the UCP because of how awful the NDP were supposedly. How'd that work out? We had a carbon tax here already, trudeaus would have been nothing if we had kept our own. But no, conservative politicians made that a battle for some reason. I am not sold on their effectiveness, but they are a reality. Just another consumption tax. Again I will point to the UCP. How did they work out with their empty promises to get the price of oil higher? One more tax cut we will all be back to work right? Hey you know who else didn't get any pipelines built? Stephen Harper. Energy east wasn't going to fix anything and the world is moving towards a lesser dependence on oil so trying to pretend that is the answer long term is putting all your eggs in one basket that is full of holes. The conservatives are oil oil oil, the NDP are no oil, the only party that actually talks about oil, but we need to prepare for the future are the Liberals. And I ******* hate the arrogance and entitlement of the liberals. But the current conservative party are no different that the UCp and Republicans who want to pillage everything and burn it all to the ground. There is no wasted vote, but if you think this bunch of conservatives will make anything better you have rocks in your head.

  48. So, while I agree with most of what's been said recently in this thread, I wanted to just say that I think there'll still be a level of interest in regional rivalries. So regardless of what rules, and the ratio and all of that......it'd still be Winnipeg playing Regina playing Calgary playing Edmonton........so there will always be a passion for the "local sports team", regardless of all the extraneous stuff. That's something that I've thought long and hard about this week. The thing that makes the CFL special to me, is it's my home province playing against other provinces and that's probably what I cheer for the most. And nothing, regardless of rule changes or whatever, is going to change in that regard. They're not taking away the Bombers.
