I hate being a cranky old man but when I read that I just want to go on a old man rant about people having no common sense. I KNOW people that have spent their life using crutches because of polio. It's not that long ago. Vaccines saved everyone from that. F##k people are stupid !6 points -

it's ******* scary, no matter how you slice it, and you absolutely do not want any part of it. Stay home unless you absolutely HAVE to be out and avoid contact with as many people as possible. In AB, where we're a giant tire fire, I am really wishing for another "lock down" (meh) until June, when a lot more people are vaccinated. Things could get really really bad over the next two months if they don't do something...5 points -

The variant B117 is really starting to ramp up in terms of cases, looking West is seems like is was a good idea for the MB Gov to not loosen restrictions, more vaccines coming into Canada next week and next month so we need to get those into the arms as soon as possible cause this variant is close to getting out of control4 points -

First thing I've found. I'm looking for more. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/b117-explainer-variant-alberta-1.5962924 Is it more deadly? There is evidence that suggests B117 is more likely to result in severe illness compared to the wild type, but experts caution more research is needed. In a study published in Nature earlier this month, U.K. researchers found the variant increased the risk of death by 55 per cent. While that number is concerning, the researchers note it translated to an absolute risk of death from 0.6 per cent to 0.9 per cent in men aged 55 to 69. An analysis by Danish researchers, meanwhile, found a 64 per cent greater risk of hospitalization among variant cases. Existing research led U.K. government scientists to conclude the variant was "likely" linked to an increased risk in hospitalization and death. But Smith says the data from the U.K. comes from a time when that country's health-care resources were stretched, which could have contributed to higher rates of severe outcomes. .... This does not address the mortality but it does have some info on the number of variants are of concern (in the US). https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-updates/variant-surveillance/variant-info.html2 points -

We didn't, so having the US below us doesn't mean squat. We could have emulated Australia or New Zealand or any other country that locked down tight for long enough. Heck, we could have emulated Japan and made sure that everyone wore masks, stayed 1 meter apart, made businesses install forehead heat sensors at their doors and not let anyone in who ran a temp. It worked for them. Instead, we let the politicians make wrong decision after wrong decision. Open up, close down, open up, close down. Call non-essential businesses essential. Let folks walk around without masks, instead of no mask, here's your ticket. Let religious gatherings happen without any repercussions. In Alberta, we even went as far as to ticket people and throw one or two of them in jail, only to let them go without even paying a fine. They're now talking about spending millions of dollars on advertising to get people to get the vaccines instead of no vaccine, no entry. They don't even want people to have to have vaccine cards to prove they've been vaccinated in case it stigmatizes those who choose not to. All this means we don't get back to normal, likely for years.2 points -

Not really. I know lots of smallish farmers that wanted it gone. Lots wanted it kept. Often the split was aged based. Young farmers are pretty savy about marketing their crops. It really didn't make sense that a couple of their crops couldn't be marketed like the rest. Canola, corn , soybeans, and special crops have shrunk the wheat acreage anyways. The wheat board was a good way to battle the big grain companies but it had also morphed into a gigantic bureaucracy. I was producing non wheat board products at the time so had no dog in the race. I could see both sides of it. But I did find it odd that you could grow wheat in Ontario and market it however you wanted. But not here. You could market your canola however and where ever you wanted. But not your wheat.2 points -

The UK started building facilities last April after the pandemic arrived. They developed and produced their own vacine since then. They have now vaccinated about %46 of their population. And this was done in a toxic political environment. Our Federal government should be ashamed of itself. They attempted a poorly arranged joint deal with a Chinese government that has few ethics and was already angry at us. What a surprise it fell through. They then sat on their thumbs for months. Kudos to our provincial government for putting money into a Alberta/ Manitoba made vacine even though it won't be available till maybe October. Those guys were beating on the Feds door for a long time and couldn't get action.2 points -

If you are referencing the Calgary facility, it is privately owned and will not be able to produce vaccines until this summer at the earliest, and then there is the approval process, which could take weeks. If Mulroney hadn't shut down Connaught Laboratories, we would have been in much better shape.2 points

There were pros and cons to the the Wheat Board- the main thing was that teh cons came in and dictated what was going to happen to it. I feel it should have been left up to the farmers to do away or keep it. I think what's left of the WB is now owned by a Saudi corp...1 point -

"The new variant quickly spread from Kent across London and southern England, going from an estimated 3% of cases in England at the end of October to 96% at the start of February. The surge pushed Britain’s Covid death toll into six figures; it now stands at 126,000. Two-thirds of those deaths have occurred since Sept. 20, when the variant was first detected. he Arizona Cardinals are closing in on a veteran backup quarterback for Kyler Murray in 2021. After going with Chris Streveler last season, journeyman Colt McCoy will likely take over that role. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McCoy is expected to have a meeting with the Cardinals next week and that meeting is likely to end up in a deal that will make him their backup quarterback in 2021. yahoo1 point
