  1. that's tough...don't wish an injury like that (significant) on anyone, especially someone who gave so much to the WBB FC. Get well soon, Stove!!

It's something that will rile up their rural core supporters incredibly well. Keep em angry and frothing at the mouth with no time to think. Not that any of them are prone to thinking anyway.

  3. Man, I think about the life of a pro athlete ... working for months or years to rehab a significant injury, all the while the football world is moving on without them and an army of hungry kids is fighting to take their spot. The focus, discipline, and grit required to get through that is just mindboggling to me. Good luck, Stove, hope to see you back blowing up kitchens real soon (except for ours, of course)

  4. It is very odd indeed. Not allowing Globals to get a better salary after their initial contract seems like this was more a way to reduce a salary in the league than it was about finding and expanding a global market.

this is the problem with the democrats. You have 2 different groups that vote for you and both are different. Biden was the status quo pick, which pisses off a significant and growing part of their support.

Severe punishment are only a temporary deterrent at best. At one time people (including children) were hanged for stealing or had one hand cut off, but that changed nothing. I have worked with offenders and none were ever deterred by the threat of consequences- they either did not think they would get caught or didn't give a damn due to being in the grip of a psychosis or in such emotional turmoil that they felt compelled to what they did. The US has the highest percentage of incarcerated people in the world but still has one of the highest incidences of violent crime. The roots of crime are in poverty, childhood abuse/neglect, addiction, lack of education (and hope for a decent future) and mental illness. Unless we deal with the root causes, we will still be having this discussion 50 years from now. Most criminals are not all that different than you or me, but at some point in their lives, their life experiences caused them to turn left instead of right.

  9. Remember this was to grow the game of football. The ideal scenario is guys coming to play here, Canadians to have opportunities to play in other countries as well. Grow the game to the point where there is money to be made for TV deals home and abroad - which is a long term goal. We've hit a couple of predictable speed bumps: A. The middleground between effective global and replacement level import B. The lack of organization in leagues abroad that makes it unappealing for Canadian players. C. The impatience of those who expect immediate results in a long term project that could take decades to develop.

  12. Yeah if you aren't going to pay the global players a reasonable amount if they deserve it what's the point? Guys like Hansen are exactly the ones that this program was designed to find... yet he might quit because it's not worth paying him anything. Another half formed idea by the current CFL management.

We have some big issues in Thompson with our education system. RD Parker collegiate has an attend and you will graduate policy in place just to try and get kids to attend. It's a mess. It is also one of the most well funded school division in the province. Sometimes problems go beyond funding models. The money is there. The problem in Thompson is a highly transient population, students coming from reserve schools unable to keep up with curriculums, lack of public transit to schools coupled with a severe winter climate, the school division evicting students from school grounds at lunch hours, and a general malaise by the school division and teachers to do anything about attendance. Frontier school division communities are generally very low income communities. Social problems in these communities exacerbate the problem, as you well know.

  18. If that's the case then how long do you wait until you get measurable results & how long do you pay them below the CFL minimum? IMO if you're going to keep Global's you should at least pay them the same as the rest of the players. That means minimum for most of them, but allows for paying more for better Global's.

  19. Sean McIndoe did a hilarious write-up of this whole scene in a Grantland article reviewing an old YouTube clip. I’ll put the link to the whole thing here: https://grantland.com/the-triangle/nhl-grab-bag-the-ref-should-be-seen-not-heard/ but one part I loved was the explanation of why the goal counted. At that time the video review could explore how a goal went in (kicked, thrown, high stick, headed, whatever) but the video review guy could only review what the on-ice official requested and not add anything else. So Morel only asked “did the puck cross the line or not?” and the video guy couldn’t say anything else. Here is how McIndoe imagined that discussion: “OK, so here’s what actually happened: It turns out the replay booth could only rule on whether the puck entered the net, not how it went in. Once they determined it was across the line, the rest was up to Morel, who’d somehow missed Emerson’s toss. • I would have loved to have overheard that conversation, as the replay guy desperately tried to tip Morel off without overstepping his authority: Morel: OK, so the puck did cross the line? Replay guy: Well, on the one hand, yes. But on the other hand … Morel: OK, so it’s a goal, got it. Replay guy: Look, I’m just going to toss this out there, but maybe you could … Morel: I’m going to let the players know, thanks. Replay guy: Really? Because I would glove to discuss this further … [dial tone] … He’s a dead man.” I was at this game too, and with no in-house replay except for the small TVs in the corners, it was hard to make out in live action what happened. Thought Emerson just got tangled up with Belfour crashing the net and the debate was goalie interference. Thought the Hawks were silly for being so upset. Then got home and saw the highlights and said to myself “Oh. Yeah, I would have been supremely pissed too.” That incident actually led to changing the goal review rules and establishing a central war room in Toronto.

  23. I'll limit my responses to stadium related sights. 1994, 9 years old, watched the Goldeyes win the championship in their inaugural season. Before the game Dad took us to buy brand new baseball gloves. Little bro left his sitting there in the stands after the game and we didn't notice til we were halfway through the parking lot. Dad was so pissed. We went back to look for it and amazingly it was still there undisturbed on the seat. Dumb lucky kid. The 2011 'Last TD at Canad Inns' was a nice way for Chris Garrett to cap off nearly 200 yards rushing. 2013 Front row end zone, Aaron Kelly caught a corner TD, jogged directly beneath me, looked me dead in the eyes, and faked tossing the ball up to me. It still hurts. Even more amazing we managed any passing TD's at all that season

As GCn20 already pointed out, many of the communities are very low income and have a range of social issues. Unfortunately socioeconomic concerns come to school with the students. Significantly higher expenses for resource and special needs (despite demands still being met at much lower rates than in Southern MB). Having a majority of students below grade level also makes it much more difficult for even grade-level students to have their educational needs met. Even with higher funding, it still doesn't meet the needs. I doubt even twice the funding would fix the education gap.

Yes, salaries in Thompson are significantly higher than they are elsewhere - that would be where a large chunk of the funding is going My understanding is that stems from having a negotiations friendly board, who were formerly union members when they worked in the mines

The thing is whenever anyone talks about banning handguns and assault rifles is that with a hacksaw and 5 minutes I can turn any hunting rifle into a concealed and fully automatic firearm, and any shotgun into a concealed and extremely deadly weapon so unless you are talking about a full firearm ban you are simply making life about 5 minutes more inconvenient for criminals who wish to arm themselves. So ban handguns and assault rifles but it really isn't going to make much of a difference other than a false sense of security. There is no magic bullet to solving gun crime without taking the guns away from law abiding hunters/recreational shooters as well....and the criminals will just find another way to arm themselves on the black market. In this regard, I agree with your sentiments about it being a waste of time. A noble one...but a waste of time nonetheless unless you want to take ALL guns away and that is a surefire way to be sitting in opposition.

"As Common Dreams reported in March, voters in their late teens, 20s, and 30s have been clear in their demands for bold climate action, calling on Biden to declare a National Climate Emergency—which would empower him to allocate federal resources specifically to the issue—and to create millions of sustainable jobs while addressing the climate crisis by passing a Green New Deal. Biden, however, has responded by approving oil and gas drilling permits at a faster rate than former Republican President Donald Trump and refusing to ban crude oil exports. Kate Aronoff of The Nation tweeted Monday there there is "probably a decent amount of young people not all that pleased to see the administration sucking up to fossil fuel executives as the Earth rapidly loses its capacities to maintain life." democrats dont really seem to care much about being in power. If they did, they would do something for the people that vote for them. also... pressure is off when they are minority, or have a manchin to rely on.this is why they put their money into conservative candidates, and oppose, with money, those that actually want change. They are the "we tried" party.

Very good article from Murat Ates in The Athletic about Josh Morrissey dealing with his dad’s cancer and eventual death last season. Too long to copy and post, and the link won’t get you through the firewall, but here is a small except. Just to give another perspective on hardass bad cop Blake Wheeler and the locker room problems he as a leader is responsible for: “Josh Morrissey spent the 2021 NHL season knowing each game he played might be the last one his dad ever saw. When the last game came — Winnipeg’s 3-2 loss to Montreal, completing a jarring Canadienssweep — Morrissey was alone in his knowledge of what it meant. When the handshakes were over and Morrissey returned to his Bell Centre stall, he couldn’t bring himself to change out of his gear. One by one, his teammates took off their jerseys and equipment to get ready for the flight home. But Morrissey didn’t move. He slumped in his stall, equipment still on long after the final buzzer. Morrissey had shared the news of his dad Tom’s brain cancer with as small a social support network as possible. Jets leadership knew. The men with letters knew. But most of Morrissey’s teammates did not… ……When Tyler Toffoli won Game 4 in overtime, completing the sweep, Morrissey was overwhelmed by his emotions. “Sometimes, you don’t realize how much something’s weighing on you,” Morrissey says. “I’m not a big crier most of the time but it just all came out. I couldn’t really stop it. It was just so, so much. I think it was the weight of the entire year. Ever since he was diagnosed, not once did I have the option — in my mind — to not be strong for him. That was the first time that it all came out.” Blake Wheeler was one of a very small number of people who understood the full extent of Morrissey’s pain. The 6-foot-5 Jets captain, well-known for his curmudgeonly affectation with the media, recognized his teammate’s distress. He approached Morrissey at his stall. “He’s a big guy — he’s a lot bigger than me — and he just grabbed me. It’s emotional for me even talking about it right now. I’ll never forget it. He just gave me a big hug. I was almost squirming away and he just swallowed me up with his hug and just stayed there with me for a few minutes,” says Morrissey. “I’ll never forget Wheels giving me that hug and saying, ‘He’ll be so proud of you.’” The years between Morrissey, 27, and Wheeler, 35, allows Morrissey to look up to his captain as much as a mentor as a good friend. He says Wheeler would do anything for his teammates, including giving him a hug that no one else would have known he needed. He also says Wheeler would hate to have this story told. “I haven’t talked about this once, actually,” says Morrissey. “I haven’t told this story. It’s emotional for me. Just what it meant for Wheeler as a friend and as a captain. It meant the world to me.” The hug ended. Wheeler returned to his stall while Morrissey stayed frozen in his. More time passed. Eventually, everyone cleared out of the Jets dressing room. That’s when Morrissey dug out his phone and went back to his stall, still wearing all of his equipment, still thinking about his dad. “I wouldn’t take my gear off,” Morrissey says. “I felt bad for the trainers but it just felt like as soon as I took my gear off, the game was officially over. So I called him.” “
