Ukraine 'Appears To Have Won Battle Of Kharkiv,' Entering New Phase Of War KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian troops are withdrawing from Ukraine’s second-largest city after weeks of heavy bombardment, the Ukrainian military said Saturday, as Kyiv and Moscow’s forces engaged in a grinding battle for the country’s eastern industrial heartland. Ukraine’s general staff said the Russians were pulling back from the northeastern city of Kharkiv and focusing on guarding supply routes, while launching mortar, artillery and airstrikes in the eastern Donetsk province in order to “deplete Ukrainian forces and destroy fortifications.” Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said Ukraine was “entering a new - long-term - phase of the war.” After failing to capture Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, the Russian military decided to concentrate on the Donbas, but its troops have struggled to gain and hold ground. Before the war, Ukraine had its most highly trained soldiers in the region to stave off the Russia-backed rebels. Russia has captured some villages and towns during its invasion. The Ukrainian military chief for the Donbas’ Luhansk province said Friday that Russian troops had nearly full control of Rubizhne, a city with a prewar population of around 55,000. Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s forces had also made progress, retaking six Ukrainian towns or villages in the past day. Western officials said Ukraine had driven Russian forces back around Kharkiv. The largely Russian-speaking city was a Russian key military objective in the early phase of the war, when Moscow was still hoping to capture and hold major Ukrainian cities. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said Ukraine “appears to have won the Battle of Kharkiv.” It said, “Ukrainian forces prevented Russian troops from encircling, let alone seizing Kharkiv, and then expelled them from around the city.” Regional governor Oleh Sinegubov said in a post on the Telegram messaging app that there had been no shelling attacks on Kharkiv in the past day. He said Ukraine had launched a counteroffensive near Izyum, a city 125 kilometers (78 miles) south of Kharkiv that has been under effective Russian control since at least the beginning of April. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/russia-kharkiv-withdraw_n_627f935fe4b050d9519247f33 points

Three-peat Kickoff Countdown

I'm embarrassed to say that I was totally wrong. I was describing the Double Wing offense & not the Wing T. It's been 20 years, sorry. Double Wing: No splits on the LOS. Super tight formation. You can see where the FB lines up right behind the QB. No way the Bombers ran this. Wing T: Like the Double Wing based on speed & misdirection to confuse defenders. Split T: This is the base formation I remember seeing whenever the Bombers played under Grant. You can see the wider splits on the OL. This created running lanes for the backs & also spread out the defense. The T refers to the 4 "full house" backfield. Hence the name Split T. Once again, sorry for the mix up on my part. How I got the Double Wing mixed up with the Wing T & Split T is beyond me. I guess I just had my senior moment for the day,3 points -

Great choices Speed. 27 is a popular number, with notable running backs Johnny Augustine and Robert Mimbs, DB Kelly “Mr. Sharpie” Malveaux, and no less than 6 Blue Bomber Hall of Fame members. The 3 above plus 1930’s-era guard Bill Nairn, 1970’s-era RB Jim Washington, and today’s choice for me who stands above all of them. Revolutionized the game and had a stadium erected because of him. Pretty good legacy.2 points -

Huge news. I spent so much time staring at my both of my children's sleeping chests when they were babies just to ensure that they were still breathing. That moment of panic when you don't see it moving initially? The worst.2 points

2021/22 - CFL Offseason - Non-Back-to-Back Grey Cup Champion Thread

Here are some of the details of the league offer per 3Down. Italics are the deal parameters, underlined comments in brackets are mine: Here are the details: • $18.9 million in total guaranteed increases to the salary cap league-wide. (This equates to a one-time salary cap increase of $420,000 in year one and no other increase, or no increase until year 7 then a $2.1 million cap increase, or an $75,000 increase every year, or some other computation) • $5.94 million in guaranteed compensation paid for community outreach and promotional appearances league-wide. • An opportunity for twenty-five percent of all revenue growth over an agreed upon the threshold, to be added to the salary cap starting in 2023. • Clubs would be permitted to re-sign their veterans to partially guaranteed contracts, a first for the CFL. • A club would be allowed to choose one American player (non-quarterback), who has been in the league for at least four years or has played with the same team for at least three years, who would be considered a Nationalized American. • This one Nationalized American would count as a National on the roster. He would join 20 or 21 Canadians who also count as Nationals on the roster. • Each roster would have a minimum of seven National starters. This would include at least six Canadian players. The seventh starter could be either the Nationalized American or an additional Canadian. • The roster would also include three quarterbacks of any nationality, 19 Americans and up to two Global players. • A starting Canadian quarterback would count as a National (Canadian). • These roster changes would kick in as of 2023. • The minimum salary would increase to $70,000 in 2023 and $75,000 in 2027. • An updated Code of Conduct that applies to all members of the CFL Community, including fans, instead of just players. (Way to go, Speedflex. You pissed off the big dog and now Ambrosie is coming for us all!) 🤣 • A seat for your union on the Board of CFL Ventures, the commercial arm of the league, will allow us to work together on marketing our league and building our business.1 point -

Washington was a helluva back. Had at least one thousand yards season. He & Steve Beaird were pretty damned good. Throw in Richard Crump subbing in & that was a great backfield Dieter Brock had to work with.1 point -

They already have, at least partially. Last night they were wearing a jersey that had a Manitoba Moose knock-off logo. I'm not aware if the old one has been mothballed entirely or not. The old one still seems to be front & center on the WHL site.1 point -

Lewis was involved in what's still one of my most favourite Bomber plays of all time. It was in the 1958 Grey Cup and the Bombers are down 0-14. QB Jim Van Pelt laterals to Lewis who starts running to his right but then stops and, with a TiCat hanging on to his leg, throws a pass back to Van Pelt, who'd run a route down field. Van Pelt catches the pass and takes it in for the first Bomber TD.1 point -

I remember telling my dad on the way to that game, for absolutely no reason at all, that Greg Carr was the next great Bomber receiver. Then he had like 2 catches for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns at half before his leg exploded and he missed the rest of the game and I thought I was a genius. I think 21 year old me just kept hoping we were going to find the next Milt Stegall, I even had a Jeffers-Harris jersey. 😆1 point -

In the conversation for greatest defensive player ever on the Bombers. Where Ty Jones and Willie Jefferson were/are game wreckers, Battle is like Adam Bighill in that both controlled the game when they played and were the glue of the defence, solid and steady, but also would make the game-changing spectacular play with regularity as well. Battle’s 1990 Cup game is one of the best defensive performances ever in the championship.1 point -
