  2. Dalton Schoen and Blake Jackson got opportunities today with all of the receivers sitting out and looked pretty good I heard.

  4. Yes. And the CFL gives them a platform in which to do that, but we also need a platform to promote all of the Canadian benefits I listed earlier. Half the roster is American. 17 starter positions. Plenty of room for the "best players" to come in and make their mark. And here's a key point on which we disagree, I guess. But the CFL isn't a major league. It's a nationalized league much closer to the CHL, KHL than it is to any of the "big 4". It exists for a purpose, and that purpose isn't the same as those other leagues - not entirely anyway. Harris is the ultimate example of a guy who most likely doesn't get a shot if not for the ratio. And we would have missed out on his career - a guy who has been in countless schools as the local kid with a rough upbringing who turned it around. This is the ultimate argument for the ratio. The literal poster boy.

  5. We don’t have a Canadian national hockey team, so I don’t see the point you’re making. Our league has been heavily subsidized by the government and tax payers and needs to benefit Canadians. That means roster spots, guaranteed spots (and competitive contracts that comes with starting), keeping the wages earned (which come from Canadian ticket buyers) in the Canadian economy as much as possible. It is not *only* about fielding the best team possible. It’s also about benefiting Canada and Canadians.

  7. Have to think if they concede the 49 percent thing and provide a bit more dollars for the American players that they should be able to approve this. At this point its less on the CFL and more about the turmoil within the CFLPA
    3 points
  8. No it's 6 and 1 I'm fairly sure. I'm fine with them making it 6 true starters and 1 american who has aged in. The 49% bullshit was just a dumb idea from the jump. Also lets not all jump on what the media (Especially TO media) are saying. I've seen at least 2 americans say they voted no as well. This wasn't JUST about the ratio and Canadians. But even if it was. Tough ****. This is Canada. Don't like it. Leave. I'm 100% in for an all Canadian league even though I know it wouldn't be what we've come to enjoy.

  11. and the fact that employee kept coming for more....even after being bitchslapped....u reep what u sow...Langley in my opinion isnt the bad guy here, and hope that doesnt ruin his chance to try out
    3 points
  12. That video was going viral in a big way, I saw it multiple times before the news came out that it was a CFL player. Honestly though, unless something else comes out, good for Langley. He apparently used a wheelchair to roll his luggage to the drop off instead of a $5 cart which while … weird, is not worth the employee trying to pick a fight over it.

  13. It's been a tough couple of years ending in a long, cold and snowy winter and delayed spring. I cannot express how much I have been looking forward to the CFL season as a significant step towards normalcy. CFL teams are not awash with money and from my admittedly quick perusal of the agreement, it seemed to be fair. Neither side was wildly happy about it, which usually means it was a good compromise.

  14. Extremely and I can't stress this enough, extremely disappointed in the players. Not going to point fingers cause as a union they all bare responsibility for voting against a very fair offer

  15. I remember watching 36 year old Jackie Parker come out of retirement in 1968 when all the BC Lions qbs got hurt & no one could play. I also remember how much in awe the tv announcers were at the time with him putting his helmet back on at his age with no physical preparation at all. Parker was an assistant coach with the Lions at the time & hadn't played since 1965. He played 8 games. The Lions went 2-6 when he came back but Jim Young in his book said it was the damndest thing he ever saw. In those days players didn't take care of themselves like they do today. Training camp was for getting in shape & losing the 10-15 lbs they gained over the winter. There were no protein shakes but they had steak & beer. Most players smoked. Careers didn't last much past 30 years of age. By then, players were so beat up physically they could no longer play. Especially at qb where defensive players could take their heads off. So, in 1968 when a player like Parker came back at 36 after being retired for 3 seasons he was considered a senior citizen. It was a huge deal. Not many players played until they were 36 years of age in the 1960's. Ken Ploen retired at 32. Russ Jackson was 33. Sam Etcheverry was 32. All the punishment they took wearing inferior equipment compared to today took its toll. Back then players even looked older at the same age than their counterparts of today. It's all about lifestyle, diet & nutrition. George Blanda at 46 in 1970. Tom Brady at 46. Times have certainly changed.

I was thinking about this. There is more to this these shootings than the amount of and type of guns. People in the states, are violent, more violent than we are able to understand. violence is viewed as an extreme, but acceptable solution to some every day problems. look at the airport incident with the football player. Use of violence is encouraged, its even legislated....the stand your ground laws. enabling citizens to go after abortion health care workers. hailing rittenhouse as a hero. He met Trump. They are just a violent country. there are many many guns in Canada, but for the most part, we do not see them as a solution. americans have been exporting extreme violence since the korean war, now, it has come home. Switzerland has a lot of guns, but the people are not nuts, so..... they dont have these shootings. Just a part of the decay of their society, which has been going on since the seventies. No real sign of significant change ahead for the better that I can see.

  19. The CFL does way too much navel gazing on the product and misses the big picture. Remember when they set the blocking rules on kick returns so that basically only a perfect block chest to chest was legal? They overcomplicate things to the point of stupidity. That’s my major issue with this roster rule change. How the hell do you administer these rules? Take away one DI (won’t matter anyway if all the punters are Aussies), add two Canadian roster spots and axe the ratio completely. Now the refs can call a football game instead of having subs reporting constantly, and you’ll have the same number of Canadians playing. Is anyone worried that 20 imports will play the entire game on a 46ish man roster?

I bet a quick post on twitter tagging some players here like Biggie or Willie or Demski etc etc might be able to get the school some better looking footballs.

  22. 100% And again, half the roster and the vast majority of starter spots are American. So I think the CFL has shown that it matters very much. And reward those guys who do it with opportunities. Whether that be coaching positions for former players like Hufnagel and Dickenson or alternate opportunities for current players like Bighill. Not sure what you're arguing about. We do all that. But as a National league, it's also important that with all of these Canadian dollars being spent, we place of focus on people here AS WELL (not instead of, like you keep pretending I'm saying). When Andrew Harris came to a school I was teaching at and pointed at the field outside the window and told students he would cut across that field every day...It hits different. Canadian born and bred players tend to live in Canada and spend their pay cheques in Canada. Americans go home spend their money there. Yes, the long term guys might move here eventually, but that's a pretty small percentage of the amount of guys that come through the league each year.

  23. many americans come from a wayyyyy worse upbringing....and also...put tons of time in up here in charitable activities...schools....coaching in the city....many move here...so whats the point...any player who comes from disfucntion...bad up bringing....poverty and crime riddled environment should be aplauded....if u look back in history the CFL has actually given just as many...if not more Americans the chance to succeed and have a great story, where nowhere else would have...especially the minority player, and the under sized..under valued....does that not matter or count either?

  24. last I looked the NFL game is completely different than the CFL game...The part that makes the CFL unique is the rules...the field, and the fact it's all Canadian teams.....is the NFL now unique because they employ the best of the best Canadian players....I think not
    2 points
  25. Grass roots hockey does just fine and there is no stipulating you need X amount of Canadians....If the Jets had no Canadians...would fans stop watching...doubt it....If CFL went to an all Canadian player base...they would lose more fans than they would if they went to an all American Player base...the game would become not worth the price you have to pay to go see it, and the gap between elite layer and slug would be laughable every where i read they added an extra Canadian but its the 3/5 yr american on top of the usual 7 Canadians...correct me if I am wrong but thats what Ive been seeing
    2 points
  26. Yes, but it’s a national league. Whether you agree or not, one of the purposes of the league is help grow grass roots football, employ Canadians, keep wages in Canada, etc. It is not simply about importing the best Americans possible. Otherwise we’d all just watch the NFL.

  27. Willie was basically a victim of off field issues....not skill/size/etc...and spin what u want...but i know for a FACT many guys who would have been generational stars up here didnt come soley because the ratio, and didnt want to risk injury in a situation where they most likely had to beat out an established vet...in his prime, or be cut when a Canadian with no real reason to be on a pro field took the position...u can disagree and argue till the cows come home, but this has been the case for decades...even today, there are a lot of Canadians with no business being on a pro football roster, but soley are as they protected by BC...Does this make the CFL great?...in my opinion no....great for Canadian players I guess...but not great for over all game...and BTW...I am a Canadian player....

  29. I feel like this off season the fans have been extremely united on a lot of the controversial issues. Old or young province to province all I see or hear is fans on the same page. Don’t screw the players don’t remove the ratio don’t get rid of 3 downs get the deal done let guys compete for starting jobs etc. the league needs to do a better job of taping into the pulse of the fan base. Its not hard to see what needs to be done.

  30. I think once he would have struck me that would have been it as I know I'd have got the guy for assault. I hope I'd be a little smarter than Langley was. Certainly that UA employee won the prize for Dumbass Employee Of The Year.

  31. Exactly, after losing a season due to the pandemic, the lack of quality QB’s, the bad broadcasts, terrible marketing, and the huge issue of not being able to attract new fans there’s a lot of issues that need to be fixed, and a strike is absolutely the last thing this league needs right now.

  33. Soley at the feet of the Canadians...u still have your gauranteed 7 starting spots...you don't want your reps cut down...prove your worth and stop crying. Canadians have been beneficiary of all previous agreements and paid in many instances well beyond what they should...and many a u.s player shown the road due to being ousted by a far inferior Canadian ..sure it's the CFL but quality shouldn't be compromised by nationality...I can tell you first hand many a great player had opted to not even come here as he has had guys in his ear telling him to not waste his time cause he gonna be cut for a Canadian player who in some cases woukd be hard pressed to start on a top notch JUCO team..this is facts You still will require Canadian backups above and beyond the actual starting 7...not just naturalized Americans...suck it up..prove your worth..if it's mainly the Canadians balking at the 49% thing..and having American league stars who stick in league and with same team being somewhat rewarded for it...guys who put butts in seats and have their merchsndise fly off shelves..they can eat a bag...

  34. Bitterly disappointed. I can’t imagine the next offer being any better. I hope this scrap the 49 percent thing is all it takes and it gets done. I also hope the cfl doesn’t get all ham fisted over this. at this point no one has leverage. Every one is about to lose a bunch of money and hurt the league.

  40. The bargaining committee was majority Canadian
    1 point
  41. The PA might want to consider having a more representative bargaining committee in the future. Having a bunch of American players leading the way with the administrators probably led to this. Don't want to go to members with a deal you expect to be ratified and have it voted down.
