Gonna head to the clinic and get mine today, I think. I'm officially 6 months from my last dose on Jan 21, but I'm told they'll give you the shot anytime after 5 months, so I think I should be deemed eligible. That new variant is no joke, and I want no part of it.

    Today I Learned

TIL the force of various football maneuvers: "To do the calculations, I reached out to Tim Gay, a renowned physicist at the University of Nebraska who wrote an indispensable book, “The Physics of Football,”" Two men of about 220 pounds (or 100 kilograms) run on a field until they reach top speeds of about 10 meters per second — when the defender suddenly slams into the receiver and brings him to a dead halt. Now their speeds are zero. Newton’s Second Law: force equals mass times acceleration. The acceleration — or deceleration in this case — is determined by the change in speed of the player divided by the time over which it occurs. The duration of hits can vary dramatically, of course, but Gay has studied NFL films enough to assert that a fair estimate to use is one to two tenths of a second. Do the math. Multiply the mass by the acceleration, and divide by the time interval over which the change in speed occurs. The backward deceleration comes out to minus 240 feet per second squared. That’s 1,650 pounds — or about three-fourths of a ton. “You get forces equal to the weight of a baby whale,” Gay says. Gay has toyed with other calculations. When two players collide helmet to helmet — only sometimes against the rules — he estimates it’s akin to having a 16-pound bowling ball dropped on the head from a height of 12 feet. Even the noncontact forces on the field are breathtaking when Gay puts them in kinetic-mathematical context. Gay once calculated the force with which a great NFL runner-receiver makes a lateral cut. It’s one of the most transfixingly elegant moves on the field — “They almost teleport,” Gay says admiringly — and he wanted to measure it. There are two forces being exerted when a player hard-plants his foot — that of the body, and that of the turf. “The ground obeys Newton’s Third Law and pushes back on him with the same force,” Gay says. “About 800 pounds of force shoot through his ankle and his foot.” And then there is the torque of a face mask penalty in the NFL, which he frames with an especially vivid comparison. “It’s about the same as if you stuck your neck in an industrial washing machine at full speed,” he says. As you watch the playoffs, remember the most important physical statistic of all. This one any innumerate person can understand: The injury rate in the NFL is 100 percent. They all get hurt. Fully one in four of the league’s retirees will need a joint replacement. They suffer arthritis at five times the rate of their peers. And they are four times as likely to suffer neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or ALS. Yet, the NFL’s health insurance program lasts five years after retirement — if they qualify for it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/01/12/nfl-physics-violence/

  16. The way this regime drafts/develops OL, it's not as big of hit as it would be for some teams. We didn't miss a beat when Goossen retired or when Chung left. As mentioned, we have guys already in place to slide in, should Couture not be back. I don't know that we actually have too many draft picks we're waiting on at the moment. Looking at the picks from 2020-22, most are already here or have been sent packing. Cole Adamson is the only one I can think of that I'd consider an up and comer. 2020: Noah Hallett, Brendan O’Leary-Orange, Marc Liegghio, Nicholas Dheilly, Kyle Rodger, Tanner Cadwallader, Bleska Kambamba 2021: Liam Dobson, Redha Kramdi, Patrice Rene, Robbie Lowes, Kyle Borsa, Shae Weekes 2022: Tyrell Ford, Cole Adamson, Chris Ciguineau, Jeremy Kapelanski, Cedrick Lavigne, Konner Burtenshaw

When the pandemic started I got into several nasty confrontations with covidiots. After a while I thought about it and decided no more. It bothered me more than them. And it goes against my moral and spiritual beliefs. So Covid has taught me it ain't worth it.I am better to remove myself.

Pour one out for Civil Servants. One of the most challenging things for any gov't, when everyone knows that they're getting booted from office, is holding onto staff. Order in Council appointments have zero protection (and they know that before going nt), so they often looking for other work long before the gov'ts term ends. Politicians make the decisions but the staff are who get things done. Without competent, experienced staff, there's very little chance you'll get much done. When the NDP was in its final throws in gov't the staff cleared out. The new NDP gov't in Alberta scooped up the good ones. It was a mess. These are political appointments, so they usually have deep roots with the party.

Yep...it's not cool with some people, but if you keep a respectful distance, don't bother your neighbor, and are nice and quiet, I see no issues with it. In Northern Manitoba being 50 yards away from someone is still a heck of a lot farther way than you get from someone in some of the South hotspots. That being said I've had a group of party guys follow me out before and blaring tunes, and being jackasses, and it ruins the day, I asked one group one time "Why did you bother following me, you obviously aren't here to fish anyway"...."Dude, we saw you have an auger and we don't have one" was the reply....lmao. I couldn't be upset with them after that.

Note all the trees and green they put in the images but will not plant trees or create actual greenspace. That, unfortunately, will be lost to budget cuts down the road. It's going to remain all concrete.

  26. My exact thoughts when I read that s**t last night. I guarantee he would not be saying that if Rourke was with any other team. I hope he enjoys having VAJ as the starting QB next season.

  27. the really funny/interesting thing in that barrage of Rourke tweets I posted last night, is the Lions fan who believes that, for the good of the league, the league should allow (even using their own coffers) for Rourke to be paid whatever it takes to top the NFL offers. Because the league apparently needs him so badly, we should just ignore all caps and just pay him whatever to stay in BC. Get ******. I'm ready to see the Leos back down at the bottom of the barrel again next year with Edmonton and Sask...

I fished through the ice last year right next to Clayton on Wekusko. He grinds hard for his footage though...lemme tell you. He is out hours before daylight and doesn't come off the ice until late. Had a beer with him in Snow Lake and he is the nicest guy. Don't disturb him when he's on the ice unless you see his flag before he does, but afterwards he will teach you all that he know. Just loves fishing that guy. He is out almost every day, and he told me that only 1 in 5 days is worth the filming, but he still loves those 4 other days on the ice/boat. He gets incredible support from all the lodge owners too. They are scouting for him for days before he gets there. With electronics the way they are now, sharpshooting is the way to go. Livescope is just so good and accurate that just driving structure ready to drop your jig is amazing. My buddy is so good at it, it's why we don't get small ones. We drop only when there is a big one. Through the ice....just find out where Clayton is going this week and follow him. lmao...jk....sort of...I've done it.

Jigging for monster lakers at 150+ ft. is a ******* experience for sure. I was lucky enough to fish God's Lake in 2019, so now those three lakes you mentioned are on the list. We had a trip to Athapap booked two years ago but had to cancel due to the pandemic. I thought jigging for big walleye was fun - until I tried jigging for big lakers. A game changer with tube jigs.

Just never have. When I go Lake Trouting I'm usually sharpshooting on Clearwater, Tramping, or Athapap, for the big girls with Livescope and I'm fishing really deep with massive baits and there just aren't the little ones around where I target. Through the ice, I don't generally go for Lake Trout. That being said, it's probably because I only go for Lakers a couple times a year and mostly as Clearwater and the guy I go with is just insanely good at finding the big fish. He is a well known fishing guide up in the North. Even has his own fishing forum...lol. Woodstoves are the bomb if you can find one. Pretty popular this time of year...lol.

  35. I don't doubt that Rourke would stay if he wasn't presented a real opportunity. But at this point, with the amount of workouts and offers, the ability to chose the best fit/opportunity, it seems obvious that there's a path to success. So, the league has probably lost him for a couple of years at least.

  38. Kolankowski got better and better as the season went on. He started out slow but by the time Couture came back, I think a lot of people were wondering if we weren't almost better off just leaving Kola in there because things had been going so well. I would have no problem if they had to start the season with him. Dobson is a Manimal, for sure, but at this point, I'm still way more comfortable with Kola starting ahead of him. Couture is a beauty for sure, and hopefully they can work it out with him...

  42. Yup absolutely and all great receivers who produce consistently great numbers need a QB to ensure their talents are fully realized. Not sure the Elks have that right now. I could be wrong tho, maybe the amateur evaluator of professional football talent in me is not seeing the full potential of TC. Plus my dislike for any team not called the Winnipeg Blue Bombers might play a part in how I'm looking at this.

  44. the other thing to consider about Demski... with CFL players, we're not talking about millionaires... guys consider playing salary but also post playing career.... Demski likely already has business opportunities, maybe a job, and a home in Winnipeg.... and legacy... he could go down as winning 3 or 4 championships with his hometown team.... is playing somewhere else and getting an extra 15 or 20k worth it when you've got all that at home?
