The reason is in the title. It's the CANADIAN Football League, not the Silver Metal for US Players League. Canadian kids should be able to have a real chance to play pro football in their own country and not have to fight over the scraps left to them by Americans who for whatever reason, didn't make it to the NFL. Ya, the number of Canadian kids playing in US colleges is growing but it is still a very small percentage. The CFL is special because of the ratio and our rules and I hope it stays that way.8 points -

No Canadian ratio, and no way Nic Demski would have ever seen the CFL field IMO. No current Canadian o-lineman would make the cut either. And maybe Andrew Harris does not survive his first year and gets replaced before he becomes dominant, or gets cut more quickly after his dip in play in year 4 and never becomes the long standing talent he has become. Fact is there are too many Americans playing that can fill the role of a Canadian that no Canuck would get the chance to grow as a player without the ratio protection (the Baltimore Stallion experiment showed how dominant a team of all-Americans could be and how Canadians would not get a look with a stacked American roster). And if no Canadian kid playing pre wee football can dream of making it as a CFL pro, they lose interest in watching the game on TV or in the stands, and the CFL goes bye-bye. A Canadian success story breeds interest which breeds eyeballs watching the game and kids invested in playing the sport.4 points -

Judge was in camp with the Texans a week after being drafted so he was just as much of a risk as Gray. Gray being a local gave the Bombers an advantage for retaining him long-term. Interesting note from this article is that Sask was actively trying to trade down from the #2 pick but had no takers, so they went with Judge. I wonder if his being a late addition to the draft with clear NFL aspirations had an affect on how teams felt about him? With hindsight, I'd guess every team would have been much more willing to take that deal given how few decent players came out of that draft! https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/cfl-draft-riders-1.41040094 points

IIRC, it was Nic "Self-Proclaimed NHL Insider" Kypreos who made some speculative comments back in January on Tim & Friends; I'd take those comments with a grain of salt considering the source. It was barely discussed anywhere else back then. Of course this comes up again now that the Jets are struggling. That doesn't make any of the speculation credible or accurate, though - then or now. Kypreos is a clown.1 point -

Yes, when measuring the trade one should look solely at the value of the pick and the advantage it gives. The long term value of it is not really in any team's control. Blue chippers can bust, and players can move on after their first contract. That is why keeping and compiling as many as these top draft picks as possible is how winning teams are created. With the benefit of hindsight, Cam Judge followed by Geoff Gray are probably the two best picks to make. Cam is who I probably would have chosen. Hard to say if he would have stuck around or left. We have a few players who moved around before coming to the Bombers and committing to us long term. Also, and not to be diminished, is the fact that at the time we chose Gray he was an NFL player. We were lucky he came back to the CFL. OL from Canada have a fairly good rate of hanging around the NFL.1 point -
BuT wE cAn'T rEnAmE tHiNgS!!! BLACKSTONE, Va. — Pickett. For as long as anyone here can remember, that is how the sprawling military base neighboring this tidy little town in southern Virginia has been known. Named for Confederate General George Pickett, it was first established as Camp Pickett when the Army built it as a combat training ground soon after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Then, in 1974, the then nearly 45,000-acre facility was renamed Fort Pickett. But the Pickett era ends Friday when the name will come down as part of a sweeping congressional order to the Defense Department to remove Confederate names from its installations and assets. Pickett, which has been operated by the Virginia National Guard since 1997, will be renamed Fort Barfoot after Col. Van T. Barfoot, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient who lived in nearby Amelia. ...... Seidule, a Virginia native who served as vice chair on the federal Naming Commission tasked with identifying Confederate names in military locations and recommending new ones, said Pickett was thoroughly undeserving of the honor of having a base named for him. “Pickett was a war criminal who summarily executed 23 U.S. Army soldiers in 1864 and then skedaddled to Canada because he was fearful of being hanged,” Seidule said. ............... Barfoot was awarded the medal for his actions in May of 1944 with the 45th Infantry Division in Italy confronting German soldiers and tanks. In a single battle he neutralized two machine gun nests, captured 17 enemy soldiers, disabled a tank with a bazooka and led his fellow soldiers who were wounded to safety. He remained in the military for 34 years and served tours in Korea and Vietnam, according to a Virginia National Guard press release. Barfoot, whose grandmother was a member of the Choctaw Nation, will also have his Native American heritage honored at Friday’s renaming ceremony with members of the Choctaw Nation and Virginia-based tribes participating in ceremonial songs and dance. https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/03/21/confederate-name-change-army-base-virginia/1 point

It gave us an all star DB that was one of the best defensive players in the league that year. Petey gave us a few really good years as backup NAT receiver depth and was great on teams, Ekakitie gave us the luxury of taking a futures pick with Gray. These were all important to our climb up the hill. For sure. Not placing blame on Walters for that one. There was not a lot to choose from.1 point -

But as a draft pick, how much value is he when he's having that impact for another team? Sask only got two full seasons out of him and his best play has been for Calgary and Toronto. Gray is also just starting to come into his own so his true value has yet to be determined.1 point

Evans can't carry Willy's bag of footballs if you compare the two. Willy's OL here was light years worse than anyone else's. He never publicly blew up on any of his teammates like Evans did. He took his lumps & suffered silently while we thrashed him as a shitty qb. Evans would have been in a straightjacket in a padded cell had he played behind that cruddy **** of an offensive line while being criticized to the bone by us, the fans & media. Willy never had a chance to have success here. The damage was done once that ankle & foot injury happened & Willy tried to resurrect his career in Toronto a year later.1 point -
that draft is probably the weakest in recent memory. They knew it going in and did the best they could... it just didn't work out. Ekakatie was a bust, to be sure, but there wasn't a lot to be had in that draft, from what I remember.1 point

The assests they got and the assest they got rid of certainly was. Willy was a high salary bench warmer at that point. Bombers needed to shore up the D that year and build depth moving forward. This also cemented Nichols as the starting QB. We didn't win a cup BECASUE of this trade, but it was absolutely a fundamental part of getting the team to the place it needed to get to.1 point -
Honestly I'd never thought of the deal as anything that amounted to much. Certainly for us, but I really didn't see a great profit for the Bombers in it. We had to pay a price for a guy who some thought may have become our next starting QB after Ricky finished. He absolutely did not. Bombers have the most wins in the league and 2 'Ships since then. Was the trade a fundamental part of building that run? I'd say not. People are welcome to disagree.1 point

2023 CFL Draft Discussion
bb1 reacted to JuranBoldenRules for a topic
This draft will be very interesting. There's about 10 guys that are probably NFL players for how long that last for them. Will be interesting to see how far they drop. Bombers could be a team to take a swing on one of them in the first couple rounds. There's also a lot of depth in the draft, and Canadian depth in general around right now. The draft is pretty heavy on linemen both ways and LB's. Not much for "skill" guys. Not sure if that makes those "skill" guys more of a target early or not. Korte-Moore is a great pass rusher in Canada West. I think he'll be gone before the Bombers pick. He's a guy that probably isn't quite good enough to get the NFL look, but might I suppose depending on his testing. He's an end from UBC, kind of hard to judge him because OL play in CanWest hasn't been great last couple years. Most of the guys who will be CFLers on the line are his teammates. Don't think he'll play anything but end in CFL. Anthony Bennett, Regina by way of FLA and will qualify as a national. Great rush end in Canada West, on lighter side but could be one of those "ratio breakers" and certainly a guy who will be able to be in rotation. Let's just say though he feasted on shitty teams (like the Bisons)...didn't do much vs Sask. Bemiy from Southern Utah might be gone earlier than the Bombers pick too. Probably available right away. Kind of a Sayles type. Would be able to rotate inside and outside. I watched Seguin at UND a lot, he transferred to another FCS school. Another inside-outside guy but I think likely to be a 3-technique guy in CFL. Obiang out of Texas State, where Dobson finished up, is an interesting one. Nose tackle type. Will be interesting to see how he tests at whatever pro day's he does, don't think he's participating in any of the Canadian combines. Sambu out of Maine, again where Dobson played until his last year, played a lot of OLB, stand up end. Likely to be a solid special teamer, probably like a 4th-5th round pick, came from a prep school too that a few of our Manitoban players who ended up down south went through. Bonhomme out of South Alabama via Indiana via the prep school circuit, huge recruit, another guy who played with a bunch of Manitoban kids in prep school. Stand up end type, played all LB spots in States but bet he's a rush end up here. Could be a great value pick mid draft, think he won't get NFL look. Schmekel, another Regina guy, greasy looking guy, big but agile, nose tackle type, dominant career in Canada West basically from day 1. I think he'll kill a lot of guys at the combine 1 v 1. Bison guys: Kornelson...not sure he's a DL in the CFL. Think a team might turn him around to OG. He's got the OL body. Probably run about 5.6 at the combine. Francis...3 technique type in CFL I think, played weak end for Bisons, basketball guy, got BIG later in high school so he has pretty good feet. Could be another turn around candidate to OL. Viner-Cox...tweener 3 technique type, played a bit of both for Bisons. Not sure he has the explosiveness to make the jump.1 point -
