    2023 CFL Draft Discussion

Both the rules and ratio have been adjusted over the years yet the issues remain. Having owners/partners who do the bare minimum to promote/grow the game is a much bigger problem (IMO).

We have already seen how certain types want to americanize the game. I think it's wilful ignorance to suggest that no ratio wouldn't mean going to full on american rules. The game is fine, the rules are fine, the ratio is fine. The problem is lazy assed teams not wanting to put in the work to grow the game in their own markets.

Always happy to hand out billions of dollars to wealthy companies to clean up messes that they are already required to clean up. Rinse repeat. Take money from the people and give it to the uber rich. Protected land? Nope! Let's give it to my pals who laundered money through my child's wedding and take kickbacks. Law & Order for everyone but not a PCs. Drunk driving and murdering people is okay as long as you're a Con and don't act woke. Who cares about answering questions from the media?! The Cons are above answering questions unless they are planted. Threaten to kill the PM and overthrow the gov't? Here's some coffee and donuts you poor KKKonvoy! Here's an envelope of money that was designated to be spread around but you can have it if you run for us! How dare you compare us to nazis when all we do is meet with and hang out with them! And on.... and on... and on....

I'd argue that he was an expert in using wedge issues and omnibus bills in order to try and get the things he wanted. Fortunately, the Supreme Court shut him down over and over again. He did not work with the opposition and he wouldn't even meet with Premiers.

  7. Should the league just fold then? Never going to reach new fans? Streaming it is part of it. Getting top performers on social media is another. The top 40 times, presses, jumps, etc. showing 1-on-1s of DBs and receivers. Promoting it to the areas where these kids are coming from, get the team beat reporters and podcasters to put out team need lists and top performers in each position group. Not everyone reads articles. There needs to be short, easily consumable media released on a variety of platforms. In the off season, there are fewer opportunities for that; but when an event does come around, the CFL whiffs.

The size of government is not the problem- its what the government of the day does with that power- to either make the lives of ordinary people better with good schools, healthcare, environmental regulations and infrastructure, or facilitating profit and growth at all costs so as to maximize profits.

Knuckle draggers yell smaller government, keep your hands off my business, muh rights, muh freedoms until of course their personal situations need government support, oversight but that’s different of course. Everything else that doesn’t fit their narrow rigid uniformed it’s all a conspiracy narrative is intrusive government!

  12. So the million dollar question - does eliminating the ratio inevitably lead to changing the rules? We’ve already seen the end zones reduced from 25 to 20 yards, and the hash marks moved in. There is always some talk about playing a 4 down game in junior football in some quarters and if we have all Americans striving to get to the NFL, would they not want a 4 down game to showcase their skills? Bottom line, stop worrying about the NFL and embrace that you are a minor league, a Canadian league, a summer league. I disagree with Booch that we “pay a premium” for lesser play. The cost difference of CFL tickets vs NFL for similar seats is huge, and also disagree that with no ratio the best Canucks still play. Right now there would be one Canadian playing in the CFL (last year) if there was no ratio - Nathan Rourke - and that guy was a unicorn. I honestly believe removing Canadians from the game is the next step towards removing the Canadian rules. I say no thanks to that idea.

  13. An undersized kr db who also blocked 5 kicks in 3 years. That tells me he’s extremely hard working and tough plus explosive as an athlete. I’ll take that combo in any size any day of the week. Throw in 26.1 per kick off return for his career and 17 pass knock downs and I can see plenty of reason to think he has the potential to be an impact player. The mafia don’t bring in imp dbs as tcf. And nfl teams don’t bring in micro dbs to be tcf.

The 2011 election was unique and very unlikely to be repeated A very weak Liberal party and strength of Jack Layton leading the NDP No disrespect to Singh or Mulcair, but they are not of Layton's calibre and never will be We had the NDP not only form the official opposition, but also split the vote in ridings that usually go to the Liberals 4 years later, it was obvious that people were ready to have the Liberals in power again The current NDP are not going to do for Pollievere what they did for Harper Even if they wanted to, I doubt PP is savvy enough to work with them

  17. There might be, I'd for sure have it on in the background right now if there was a feed. The lack of streaming for the combine is just one example of their poor social media skills. The original tweet that Madani replied to also used the 14 year old kid & his youtube account is another. I get there were copyright issues involved but they could have turned it into a positive story by working with/mentoring the kid and using him to help build that next generation of fans.

My belief, my approach is always one of inclusion. But, I know lots of people that prefer the exclusion. It's philosophical difference. My beliefs are supported with evidence and validated with experience. I don't fear the gov't because they controlled by the rule of law, which includes the Charter.

  20. Expand on that. I bet you can't. Or won't. And corporate entities don't...? You also don't get to opt out of food costs, energy costs, etc., all of which are controlled by corporations. Yeah, it isn't like corporate profits have skyrocketed in the last year or so. Oh, wait... It's like you're not even trying here.

  23. Remember that Brandon Alexander was a walk-on at a Florida skills camp/scouting combine. No pedigree, nothing inherent in his game that screamed “star”. Yet hard work made the coaches have to notice him, and we have a game-breaker now. No one is fodder unless they choose to be.

  34. certainly would....as it wouldnt be an all american...it would be a league with best players playing...and prob have a caveat that each team needed x amount of canadians on it...but not neccessarily as starters...the best Canadians would still play...or get the chance to play pro....it's just the slugs...and there are many ...that would lose jobs, and are only on a roster due to the ratiowhich brings down the quality of the game...and in eyes of many really good American players who balked at coming up here, as basically if they didnt beat out an established vet....would be cut for an inferior player...so why even waste the time....and believe me...it happens way too many times...this league missed out on superstar after superstar...or shall I say would have became one...just because of the ratio....U could have had a game breaking receiver say for example...who could help you out in a big way...but we get the Petermans and the Matt Dubucs of the world who basically take up a spot...take minimal reps if any...most times don't even become the starter when a starter goes down....and if they do....they are well below average for a pro...Just cause they Canadian...slice and dice it any way you want....but the ratio allows for a subpar product...yet we are forced to pay premium price to watch it....does that make sense to the intelligent person?...I think not

  37. What’s the crisis? Almost none of those guys would have started or even played in a CFL game this season….and they’ll be in the 2024 draft. What you’re saying is like saying the NHL would be in crisis if they moved the draft year to 19 from 18. A far bigger issue is the quality of American players coming in. Guys aren’t going to come in young as they have so many options to stay south. Also anyone at a Power 5 school is getting paid as much as they will in the CFL to play NCAA. They aren’t broke anymore, they can bide their time in the States that much longer. On the other hand the CFL will get guys that have been in the US minor pro leagues and are used to being a pro. It’s just a change.

Oh they want smaller government alright, but only in the case of smaller government in regards to wealthy corporations. These entities have shown time and time again that they need more regulation not less because they can not be trusted to do the right thing.

the only issue with the ratio....and I say this loosely because I don't know enough about CIS football.........is if we get a 10th team, and therefore need an extra-team's-worth of NI players, how diluted will the talent pool be? Again, I don't know enough about how good CIS is these days and maybe there's enough guys out there to fill a 10th team with quality NIs.......but I have a feeling we might need to reduce the ratio by one or something, just so we don't dilute the talent pool too thin.

  41. This is something that should be address by the CFL brass asap. Bombers should be held up as an example....so far anyway....their partnership with Football Manitoba and The Pit football league have very much increased youth involvement in football. I don't know the exact numbers but I know flag football is the fastest growing sport for youth in MB. Does that translate to tackle/CFL viewership...? I don't know. But it can't hurt! I also know the Bombers in partnership with Football MB reach out to specific community organizations to promote youth tackle football and even get teams started. Valour Patriots folded a few years ago and Football MB has been vocal in getting it started again...we came close last year but coaching issues came up just before the season started. Hoping things are different this year!

  46. I like the ratio and the rules. I'd be ok with a ratio tweek or further refinement of americans counting as nationals depending on how long they have been in the league or with one team. I believe the league did this in the 60s. If you eliminated most of the Canadians and went to US rules, I'd stop watching.
