  1. What kind of hurtful sterotype is that? Maybe his family owns a waste management company.

  2. he plays mean....exactly what makes an oline dominant...I actually shocked we got him where we did...I think some other teams scouting departments were asleep at the wheel...Even right out of college he would be the perfect replacement for Eli in the jumbo package..blasting bodies out of the way as he develops...If Dobson can come in and show he can be a legit left gaurd....an interior of Neuuf...Eli and Dobson ..would give us a nasty streak mean interior...and with Wallace coming in for Jumbo packages in Eli's old spot....would be a pile pushing juggernaut

  4. The level of athleticism should be increased. Clercius is an exciting guy to me. When you watch his videos he competes really hard and is a hell of an athlete with that size. There's a lot of downfield shots in there, he's great at tracking the ball and finishing the play. Skill set is a bit of a mix of Demski and Wolitarsky. The willingness to go hard in blocking and special teams as a receiver is huge too....not often a guy who has those ball skills is that willing. Only concern there is long-term if he does turn into something he might have the pull to head home.

  5. I think he may be remembered more for his Never Alone Foundation that helped cancer patients, families & caregivers than his time as a Bomber player or President. Rest in Peace, Lyle Bauer. He'll be missed.

    Passing of Lyle Bauer

I don't really want to take clicks away from the Freep, but I will for this article. Bomber legend’s greatest impact was off the field Three-time Grey Cup Champ co-founded Never Alone Cancer Foundation By: Taylor Allen https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/2024/05/01/bomber-legends-greatest-impact-was-off-the-field Lyle Bauer was a hall of fame athlete, a respected football executive, and a charitable force that improved the lives of thousands. “He was a difference maker, and he lived his life that way,” said former Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive lineman David Black, who played six seasons beside Bauer. “I’m proud of everything he did and accomplished through a lot of adversity.” MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS files Lyle Bauer left a lasting impression on people whether it was on the gridiron or working with cancer patients. Known as one of the toughest blockers in CFL history, Bauer helped the Blue and Gold hoist the Grey Cup on three occasions (1984, 1988, and 1990). He earned that same respect in the front office as an assistant general manager (1992-94) and later president and CEO (2000-09) when he brought some much needed stability on and off the field to the Winnipeg Football Club. His biggest impact came away from the gridiron when he co-founded the Never Alone Cancer Foundation (NACF) in 2004 shortly after being diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer. For two decades, the organization has helped individuals affected by cancer with emotional, financial and informational support. Bauer, who lived in B.C. near Slocan Lake, died earlier this week at 65 with his family by his side. “He made use of his time here,” said Bauer’s daughter Danni, who lives in Calgary. Bauer and his wife Heidi also have two sons, Wesley and Brodie. “He’s done so much. The stuff he did with the Bombers was amazing, but I think just connecting with people and how he was such a positive force (is what I’m most proud of).” Free Press Files Bauer had a 10-year career with the Bombers from 1982-1991. Born in Saskatoon, Bauer played at Weber State University in Utah before enjoying a 10-year career with the Bombers (1982-1991). In addition to being a team captain, he was named Winnipeg’s most outstanding offensive lineman in 1988 and a division all-star in 1990. Bauer was inducted into the Blue Bombers Hall of Fame in 1998. Chris Walby was Bauer’s roommate and has no shortage of stories to share. “We just traded for (defensive lineman) Leon Hatziioannou, a good guy, too, and it was the day before the game and we were just doing a walk-through. We don’t go 100 miles an hour, but Hatzi kept going 100 miles an hour and he was going against Lyle and Lyle said ‘You better slow down, brother.’ But Hatzi kept coming, so, he chopped Hatzi at the knees,” said Walby. “He was not one to be taken lightly. A really good football player technique wise, but he had that mean streak which was great about him. He’d get in the huddle and he wouldn’t say much, but he’d give you the eyes. You didn’t mess with Lyle. He was fiery and took no prisoners.” Marc Gallant/ Free Press Files Bauer rides in on a motorcycle during the halftime presentation of his induction into the Blue Bombers Hall of Fame in 1998. “I loved Lyle, he just made my laugh. I’m gonna miss the **** out of him and that’s all I can say.” Bauer had an uphill climb in front of him when he became president and CEO as the Bombers were in debt. He managed to get them into the black and appear in two Grey Cups (2001 and 2007). He held the same role with the Calgary Stampeders from 2010 to 2013. “When he got the job, I was a free agent at the time and it was the last time I ever was a free agent. We’re talking on the phone and I tell him, ‘This is what I want and this is what I expect to get,’” said hall of fame receiver Milt Stegall. “And the first words he ever said to me was, ‘I don’t think you’re worth that.’ And I was like what the heck? Who is this guy? What does he think he’s doing? But after that, everything worked out and our relationship was spectacular. Our relationship went way beyond him being the president of the team and me being a player.” Stegall added: “People were held accountable. People knew there was a new sheriff in town and you had to be on your job. It wasn’t about just being good, you had to be great, you had to be at your best if you want to remain in the organization… He brought in a different mentality. It was unfortunate we weren’t able to get that Grey Cup when he was there but he did some great things on and especially off the field.” Free Press Files Bauer, No. 59, was named Winnipeg’s most outstanding offensive lineman in 1988 and a division all-star in 1990. When Bauer got sick, he didn’t give up. He kept working, kept fighting, and was determined to help others who were going through a similar battle even when the disease was taking his voice away from him. The foundation started by helping around 50 or 60 people a year, but that number has grown to 500-plus. NACF executive director Michael Schiefer said Bauer never imagined his vision would turn into what it has. Before the pandemic, Bauer would host an annual fishing getaway with cancer patients to help them get their mind off of things. He was also always quick to reach out and offer a lending hand to anyone who contacted the NACF “At one of our luncheons, I’ll never forget this one time where he was making his rounds around the tables and he met a man, who now volunteers for us, with a very similar diagnosis. In mere seconds, Lyle could show compassion and this hulking figure would wrap his arms around you which he did to this man and he said ‘(You’re my) brother, anything you need, I’m here,’” Schiefer said. “For that brotherhood to be extended to just somebody in attendance is something I’ll never forget. It was a really powerful moment to witness.”

  8. I'd be more concerned with that if he was a tackle and or projected to be one....Coaching and reps at pro level will be all he needs to be a mauling interior guy....you cant teach size and brute force, and the ability to wash guys out...which is what he brings....We will coach him up to get lower...how to create a strong base...and be a body mover...no concerns there...And if he has any hand skills, and seeing as he has above average arm length for an interior guys...he will be just fine....and he has prob one the best all time in Bryant with his hand technique to watch and learn from....If You ever focus on Bryant and watch how with even the most isnignificant looking thigs he does with his hands to disrupt a pass rusher you will truly be amazed...and what little effort it takes for him to do it....Dude's a master and part of why he has been able to play an elite level in his mid/late 30's...his bread and butter isnt necessarily speed and brute force

  9. And THEN, you throw the Strevelation at that pile being pushed - hitting that moving wall at full speed - how is any CFL D-line going to stop that?

  15. I can't recall it ever happening before. Odd indeed. The year the Riders picked Onyemata was different than us taking a flyer on Manu. They had very poor NAT starters and depth and only had a few picks that year. It was a dumb choice by them given the circumstances. For us, having 10 draft picks, a flyer/future pick or two was almost compulsory because there is no way we can roster 10 new NATs anyway. I guess my point is that whether or not a flyer is an acceptable pick or not isn't so much what round it was done, although that's a factor, it can be a good pick or bad pick based on team need for players as well.

  16. Reminds me of the year the Riders picked David Onyamata later in the draft. A gamble that never paid off but no real damage. Need a better punter, though. Tough to cover this line drive kicks.

  17. Really enjoyed hearing Walters talk about the depth they added in the draft, but also about some of the guys that were drafted in previous years that they expect are going to make an impact both at role positions and special teams Clercius, MCI, Ford (I know he did play for us but he's an improvement), Charboneau, Kelly (stepping up to AR), MacDougall. Not to mention the global guys who will be competing for the last "Canadian" spot. And we only really lost Briggs, Miller (who wasn't actually playing) and Exume? Our special teams have to be better this year, right?

  19. For all the discussion about drafting a RB/FB hybrid, if we think of Mike Ike in the core special teams linebacker role (with an elite athletic profile for that and film to back that up) then it could be good value that he could fill that special teams role while also playing 10 snaps a game on offense Walters said Klercius is also going to be a special teams guy and bring a physical presence to the offense Those two + adding a big hog like Gabe Wallace and suddenly the Bombers invested big time in fortifying the physicality of an already really physically imposing offense while simultaneously boosting the special teams cover units

Very kind the times I met him at signings, fan days. The Never Alone Foundation is an amazing legacy for him to leave. He also did a lot to help dig the club out of a massive financial hole in 99-2000. RIP Lyle.

  22. 15 DL on the roster, plus 2 picks plus 1 returning from college. 7 of the 15 are DTs, plus 1 pick and 1 returning. Could see another couple ends come in still. 11 ol plus I would expect the 2 late picks to be in camp. Could see us adding more OL before full camp. 9 lbers plus 2 drafted and 1 returning from college. Thats a LOT of lbers, but we can always use more and always carry lots. 26 dbs on the roster plus the 3 signed today. 0.0 thats a lot lol. I could see a handful getting cut in rookie camp and a bunch more brought in for full camp. 4 rbs plus 1 drafted and 1 returning. I could see another imp or two coming in, though probably more KR types. RB and QB would be nearly impossible to crack to roster on here. 22 wrs plus 2 drafted. We never stop adding wrs or dbs. Could see a few more wrs to limit lopsidedness in rookie camp, and again KR types. 4 qbs plus the 1 from the college program, probably won't see an arm brought in unless some one is hurt or cut early. 2 kickers and 2 punters. Probably done on that front too.

  23. Feet and movement is the entire game. Watch Hardrick last year try to lean on guys and them in Collaros face 0.3 seconds later. We're not running 40 times a game. So he's got a long way to go from my view of his videos out there. Both in terms of keeping his feet engaged and bending (lowering) his hips so he doesn't get lifted...which is a big issue if he's playing inside run or pass.

  29. if he can punt the ball...and be consistant with it....I hope that spells the end for the global punter and we will roster a diff global that offers depth and ST usage....

  30. I like that signing...Talked to a few peeps familiar with him and rave about his work ethic and ST work...will fit in here realy well with the FIFO thing The bonus is as a guy coming in to fill the Miller role...as fullback he actually has the skill set and athleticism to be a threat out there and fully expect him to get some usage in that role....guys will need to be aware of him sliding out of the backfield on short yardage plays....he not respected, he could gobble up serious yards on pitches and swing passes...and 2 back sets in goal line area with him and BO together is gonna be a big plus too...Hoping too that Samson can push Thomas to the PR or the pasture...for the amount of reps Jake should get, ne better served with the young Bull....which can put him that much more further ahead in development for 2025...and depending on the defensive ratuio and where we choose to use the 1 starter we need...we may not even need to use a National DT save for just rotation and keeping guys fresh....which I hope is the way we are headed especially with Ford back....and if we actually use the Nationlized Yank option
    2 points
  31. Kelly should have been on active roster all year long....when he was on he was one the top ST guys we employed....losing games for the likes of Schmeckle...That Oline guy we dressed earlier in the yr for no particular reason...Named started with an S....thats how much an impact he made on my mind....Bennett...who better really bring it and show he belongs, or be cut in camp....just a complete head shaker...almost on par with the Jackson lunacy....so odd he hasn't been scooped up for his stellar DI use elsewhere...tells you something especially with a few real weak sisters in the league

  32. IF Covington comes back with the right attitude and work ethic, he will be a very tough guy to play against. If he is Mr. I used to be in the NFL so I am above the need to put in effort, then he will be added to the list of players that came from the NFL and flamed out. I hope it's the latter, because if it's the former the Leos DL just got scary again. Our STs will be better by default, because last year they weren't very good. Adding better players and depth will help, but really I expected out STs to be much better pre-draft. Now I am quite certain that they will be much better.

  39. " If TSN wants 18-40 year olds watching" the best marketing program that I remember is going after junior high and high school students Players visiting schools combined with ticket giveaways might win over some this can be family-oriented with parents or peer oriented with friends… Often teens like to travel in packs as a nonthreatening easy way to socialize the key is to make it easy in terms of both money and transportation has anybody seen any studies showing the effectiveness of such student programs? There certainly is a lot of empty seats in the CFL that could be grouped into a fun zone We need to win hearts at a young age as a cool form of entertainment

  41. That's a very good thing... as long as you're talking about the 24-30 year old version of Jake... I don't pretend to know anything about the prospects but some of the resident experts around here seem to really like Brubacher... I wonder if we could've drafted the second round like this: 13 - Clercius 14 - Chris-Ike Brubacher 17 - Wallace 20 - Samson Chris-Ike Still end up with WR, RB, OL, DL but potentially an upgrade at DL... just a thought
    2 points
  42. I see no need for either other than PR emergency....same can be said with Thomas really...if he takes an active roster spot on game day roster...thats a huge swing and miss...he should be for insurance in case Lawson gets hurt, and Samson isnt cutting it in a limited role rotation...which is what Thomas should be at most....why slow down a rookies development if you dont have to....rostering a rapidly declining player soley on tenure/loya;ty at expense of a younger player, if they are at par is plain dumb
    1 point
  43. Yeah. Only way I see either sticking around, other than getting moved to ol which isn’t needed, is if Thomas retires or gets hurt and is out for a good while. Especially since we will have the roster flexibility to carry a di dl again full time.
