  1. The lack of coverage in training camp is truly so frustrating. The human interest stories are great fluff and I can’t blame Ed Tait because that’s what the club wants but come on … Bighill out to start the year and not a peep about any of the new linebackers. Two offensive line spots open and no clue who is out in front of the competiton. A full draft class and no idea how they’re slotting in yet. Is Haba/Fox starting just a closed case already? Does anyone want to talk about it? KJ Hill cut and as per the reporters, he was “a hyped rookie” but absolutely no mention of who may lock that spot down now. It gets worse every year. @DTonOB explain yourself

  2. It is one of the stupidest points I’ve seen anyone try and make on this forum. I support the team with season tickets, I save my time off all year to be able to make as many games as possible, I buy merchandise, I travel to watch away games. I’m working non-stop at the moment because I’ve got my first kid on the way and my work is busy as hell right now, so forgive me for not prioritizing something that we have paid reporters for.

  3. Yeah, you’re right. If I wanted to do it bad enough, I would. I don’t want to do it bad enough. I want the media to do their job. Are we even having this discussion? Like what stupid point are you even trying to make here?

  4. Or .. on the dawn of a new season .. the sports media can cover the most successful franchise this city has.

  5. Ok cool can you pay me my lost wages for the day so I can go do the media’s job for them?
    5 points
  6. Exactly. My Dad used write for the old Winnipeg Tribune. I grew up hearing about Jack Mathison, Vince Leah and Jim Coleman. My time had hacks like Friesen, Paul Wiececk, Randy Turner. We’ve had great Bomber reporters in my lifetime, but they’ve worked directly for the club (Irving, Tait) I could go off about Postmedia but I’ll keep it relatively on topic. If it were a full-time job, I think Doug Brown could be the investigative/thorough type of reporter we all want.

  11. Curious that Eli is not on the roster. Curious that Vanterpool is at guard not Tackle. Wish I knew more about Hackett and Witherstone who are starting at HB tomorrow. I hope Gemmel or Moses takes the reigns at MLB.

  14. I'd settle for a few unmonitored streaming cameras fixed on location like they have in the streets. The Bombers and the CFL in general has to change their attitude about limiting access and encourage open coverage, it's not like they're protecting vital state secrets from CFL spies.

  15. If only some sort of media existed to report on such events, that could really be a key part of sports.

  16. At this point we have week 1 question marks for starting roster jobs at dt, de, lber, 2-3dbs, 1-2ol, kr, wr and possibly db. With ba, biggie, neuf, and Brady all banged up. Even Demski too. Despite all that we get 1 written article, and 2 videos that are all player interview fluff pieces. I’m just waiting to find out some one important isn’t even at camp again.
    3 points
  17. Yup...only can do one thing now..bull rush and not even that good at that now...has no lateral ability...or technique to make up for that...has absolutely even less pursuit ability...no upside..only continued slide down now...and just blocking young players reps and developing...I see no reason at all for him being here now...even last yr already...and don't say vet leadership...we have more than enough of that and need young guys stepping into that role now anyway

  20. Dude, there are literally people who are paid to do this. And we are literally on a forum where we express our thoughts and feelings about the things those people say (or don't say). That said, they are reporting on the names that most people know. But training camp battles seem like low-hanging fruit. But I guess they don't want to sound like idiots when they hype up a guy that gets cut the next day.
    2 points
  21. U aren't being serious are you about this? People have lives outside of going to camp...and media job is to report actual stuff...not regurgitate meaningless fluff...or stuff that isn't directly related to position battles...especially if they want to.put their lazy stories behind a pay wall...I've been to.practices where 3..4..5 "reporters " are yucking it up with themselves and then practice ends and are like "well who stood out" They have no clue....also we need reporters with some.onions to ask questions....challenge what the coach is saying...ask for what's and why's...they a bunch of sissies who allow Osh to continue with his smug comments and never question his stubbornness at times about stuff...and his clear biases on some things/players.. That's 80 percent of why a lot of our coverage is sub par...cowardice and laziness Good example from last yr...Parker was ready to go a good month before they even contemplated it...looked best in practice drills and in skelly...one time in a pinny a couple reporters were even "oohh...who's that guy" then realized oh its Parker...I even asked Parker about a month before his first time back in lineup when he figured he be ready...said he ready for a while now but "it's not his time" and could tell he was frustrated...

  23. Gets worse every year for sure.....Grant has departed and not a word on how his replacement is coming along.....AND oh yeah, do we even have a replacement...The CFL sure knows how to shoot itself in the foot...Maybe we'll get a glimpse of a returner in the pre-seasoner tomorrow...A lot of positions need critiquing as well and it sure is sloooow in coming
    2 points
  24. This is why pre-season games still hold interest, it remains the only occasion to see many of these players compete, once cut they're gone for good.
    2 points
  25. yeah nothing of substance at all...or any actual insight/thought....just regurgetation of echoing some of what the coaches say in any media scrum...and even at that at times some of what they say is not realy a good indiation of anything, andd they will pump tires of whatever player they are asked about....so you don't get a true sense of anything.....Not like you are going to get a "we don't think he has the stength to play pro"....we like player X's hands way better"....."Too slow at this level"...."Player Y is a much better option"....sometimes you need the coach to say things to light a fire under a guy, or give a returning player who may too comfy in the thought he is good.....to really get best out of the best..... Even some of the pre-season "camp battles" basically focused on returning guys, as guys with the inside track for a spot....which is garbage and sad if the case.....I also still don't 100 percent trust in our HC going with the actually best player abvailable, or one with the best ceiling, but still some of this loyalty/favorites thing going down...Hope I am wrong.,but we will soon see.

  26. Where's Sam Hurl when you need him? The local press used to cover the Bombers like a blanket. We had award winning writers covering the team everyday at practice on the road & at home. Budget cuts, Postmedia layoffs over the last two decades has left us with just a couple of reporters covering the team gives us what we have now. The one league that relies on media coverage was the CFL. Now, it's virtually gone & this is what we get.
    2 points
  27. Plus you got a couple spots open on O. Would be ridiculous to just bring 2 QBs brand new to the league then cut guys after who never had a chance to make a play. Strev atleast gives these guys a chance I’d imagine

  28. All the talk of kick return changes amount to nothing. Bit surprising, think they should’ve tested some option in pre season.
    2 points
  29. We aren’t talking minutia, we are talking basic roster and practice updates. Oh hey, btw this vet hasn’t played all Tc but he’s fine. Oh never mind missed 6 games. They’ve always had multiple beats, the Bombers are one but aren’t covered for news. And this is one of the slowest periods of sporting news. Go look at tc day 1 news for the jets. NHL, you’ll see 4 source articles with the type of break downs we used to see. So and so didn’t practice. This person got most of the reps at they position and looked how ever. Now good the ny jets tc day 1, 2 hour pre show. This is the content the modern sporting market wants.

  30. VAST majority of people don't care about the minutiae that most of us here care about. The fluff pieces draw the most clicks, otherwise they wouldn't be doing it that way. But obviously the best case scenario is a bit of both. Do some feature piece columns for people who just want that, and then have a bit of minutiae.... but it's also really hard when the team doesn't want you to have that information. Especially injury information. They won't give that out so there's not much to work with. Now, I don't really watch those Bonfire Sports things, but my UNDERSTANDING of it is that if you want more in depth information, Bauming is at least trying to give you that. A part of the problem is you have less reporters doing way more work now than they used to. Everyone is wearing 7 hats and covering several different beats from news to sports and everything in between. The days of a writer and then a camera man and then whoever else all going down to the stadium and their sole job is to cover the Bombers... are definitely over. The one guy who might be strictly responsible for Bombers coverage (and quite frankly he's done an okay job of coming on here and updating us) is Derek. And he's also updating his twitter with information from practice every day. Most other guys have to cover multiple things and the Bombers beat is just one small part of their job. Newsrooms getting gutted all over. I definitely feel for them.

  31. In football, people care. Big college programs and nfl teams have incredible amounts of tc coverage. It doesn’t matter or sell in basketball but it sure does in football. Also, we used to get it from multiple sources. If it was viable then, in the super sports fan era now it wouldn’t be less viable.
    1 point
  32. It obviously continues, Parker must have suffered a serious injury last week if O'Shea doesn't think he'll return within the first 6 games, and yet no mention of what actually happened to him from anyone.

  33. Nothing of my own...would offer more here but too many douchenozzle retorts a lot of the time I tend to keep it to minimum now or in PM's
    1 point
  34. Honestly though. If people actually remember "back in the day" when the reporters were all at practice and writing stories every day, none of us were satisified. We would sit here every day and complain that they weren't watching practice, they would still just type up whatever coaches were spewing during the interview portion. Don't try and re-write history now people. You were all just bragging about how long ya'll been on the forums, can't pretend things you were ever happy with media coverage.
    1 point
  35. Yes assuming we wanted to do it bad enough, we could all make time to pursue that. But I suppose unlike you, some people have other priorities that trump certain activities. And gosh don't you know it'd be real nice if there was some kid of organization or individual etc etc that could head to those activities and either remember what they saw or take notes/videos etc and then share what they had with other people. I might even pay for that kind of time saving convenient (what should we call it...) "report". I understand that selling convenient things to people is a foreign concept. But I imagine eventually it will catch on.

  36. Media is putting out stuff. It’s just not stuff the hardcore fans here on Mbb.com want. But they are putting stuff out. Sure but how many ppl really truly give a **** about the pre season and training camp? I’m not sure the masses do. I know we all do on here but perhaps we are the vocal minority
    1 point
  37. To be fair, they are. They just aren’t covering what 85 people online want them to. Just saying. I’m part of the 85 btw so I get what you are saying.

  38. We dressed 12 ol, I imagine Eli just leaving time and reps for the rest. Vanterpool plays both iirc, they may want to get one imp G reps in case Nuef isn’t good to go. Must be the super deep jets play off run soaking up all the attention… or the mega early goldeyes spring training with all the news worthy star additions… or the raptors no can’t be that… blue jays… oh yeah no. The local sports news has a whole lot of nothing else to cover, and the most interesting tc in this teams great era to cover but instead does sweet fluff all.

  39. Yeah damn it Mike, it’s your fault entirely that the local reporting industry is failing to do its job! As soon as you’re done taking your vacation time to leave work, (dont bother with the family you would normally commit that to they aren’t important) go and scout camp then fill in for the failed reporters, report to each emergency room and start working on knocking down that lead time. Then any other system that has failed you and led to complaints will need to be fixed. Too much to expect accountability and professionalism with in the respective industries the onus is on the people let down to fix every thing!

  43. Dallas New York is I’m sure what nhl hoping for. Canucks run will end in Dallas tho. They are a wagon. beat defending cup champs Vegas rd 1 beat cup champs 2 seasons ago Colorado in rd 2. They deserve to win. I’m actually cheering for them but not really watching like I would be if jets involved.
