  1. Yea and I can only speak for myself but if Kelly had been in a Blue and Gold uniform I'd absolutely come in hot on him. Sports is a far second to this ****.

  5. Agreed. Brady is closing on on 2000 yards from scrimmage. He'd need a monster game to get there (217 yards) but considering how POORLY this team played in the early part of the season, I'm amazed he's as close as he is. It's even more impressive when you consider he played two fewer games than last year when he finished with 2016 total yards from scrimmage. Brady *should* be a serious contender for MOP.

  6. I hope both Brady O and Ford have monster games this weekend to cement it and leave no doubt.

  7. @Brandon Some CFL QBs from 90s had significant careers in the NFL Flutie, Garcia, etc. Which of the current CFL QBs do you think are going to do that?

  9. Yeah, coaching is soo much harder on families than playing when you’re at any decent level. “Football season widows” is a bitter inside joke that people don’t really see. Or how most of the position coaches and cos live season to season. It’s brutal, that’s why I don’t question guys who take cushy jobs with huge pay days. Get it when you can.

  10. The Flutie tossing shovel passes comment like it was all he did just shows some ignorance. Guy could make every throw. In terms of the 90s, Flutie not only spent significant time in the NFL, he was a Pro Bowler. Ditto Garcia, long NFL career and 4 Pro Bowls. David Archer had spent a number of years in the NFL before coming to the CFL. Nobody currently in the CFL has done that or is likely too.

  11. Nonsense, the reason you don't see guys getting 200 points is because Wayne Gretzky doesn't play hockey anymore, and neither does Mario Lemieux. Seriously, Look at what McDavid did a couple years ago... other than the aforementioned guys that's pretty much right up there with those guys in the 80s who only put up numbers cause everyone else was ****...
    4 points
  12. I don't blame younger viewers for not appreciating Flutie's incredible talent. It's like watching vintage Gretzky. You had to be there to appreciate their vision and innate six sense. I will always remember Flutie escaping at the last minute and somehow finding an open player or killing us with a Qb sneak. Without a doubt the best Qb to play in the CFL. If he would of been taller we never would of seen him in the CFL.

  13. I have also pondered this. Defences seem to have gotten quicker and smaller, what would a "bruising offence" look like against modern CFL defences. How would a physical big oline with a 6th/TE type (think Willy J type size) and a true FB with a guy like Brady look? Could they overpower and wear out modern day CFL defences? The TE would need to able to at least add some receiving ability, and the FB would need to be able to pound the ball, they couldn't just be blockers....but with all the programs around the globe a few of those guys have to exist. It would still leave 3 true receivers even with the "heavy" sets. Perhaps I am wrong as no one is trying it, but I think a set up like that could counter the speed and smaller size of modern day defences....I would say scoring is down QB play perhaps is down overall, and defences seem to keep getting lighter and faster at some point offences need to try something to counter that

  14. If we were to play a 80 percent 2 back set with BO and even another bruiser, and a true tight end type who is used on release passes and streaks and slants...and just beat the crap outta of a defense and took shots with the receivers when it was there....good luck with that with a lot of the undersized defenses

  15. Offensive players, aside from WRs, have dipped pretty good in talent over the last 10-15 years. If we had continued at that rate, I don't think most guys could play today. And while WR talent is high, I think it'd be one of the easier positions to play at across eras. Teams are soo disinterested in the run game today and just recycle backs endlessly. OL play is in a serious low point (even with holding basically not called any more) and QB play has had the biggest drop off. I actually think a heavier team atleast on offence would be very hard to defend today. Imagine the thunder and lightning era bombers? Who is lining up to take on mike sellers for any team? The amount of guys on the average D today, who weigh more than 225 lbs is extremely low. Any powerback of size would give the league fits today.
    3 points
  16. Sure, hockey in the 80s was less structured, but D - men got away with a lot more clutching and grabbing. Then you had the trap plus clutching and grabbing in tbe 90s. Think of how the Devils played when they won all those cups.

  17. I hate comparing players and teams from different eras. The modern athlete as we know him to be in 2024 is a different creation than anything prior to the 2000s could have conceived of. And most of these guys who basically look like they've been produced in a laboratory somewhere look that way for a reason: they pretty much were for the first 18 years of their lives. The only way these cross-era comparisons ever work for me requires that I imagine the player from the earlier generation having had the same training and upbringing in modern methodologies that the current one had. This would radically change my imagined outcome. Imagine a Guy Lafleur that didn't smoke and had all of the physical training, modern hockey analytics and nutrition/supplements that say Connor McDavid has had over his life in hockey? (Don't bother trying to imagine Wayne or Mario this way... Wayne would get injured walking to a weight room and Mario would tell off anyone who tried to get him to stop smoking his pack a day).

  19. Not to mention the NFL was still stuck in the "qbs below 6'3 need not apply" mindset so qb talent was often overlooked by the NFL for stupid reasons. That doesn't happen anymore.

  20. You don't think Flutie tossing shovel passed would do well in today's CFL??? WTH??? Who out of maybe Collaros. Kelly & Adams would have started in 1994 with Dunigan throwing for 713 yards. Flutie, Austin, Dunigan & David Archer all throwing for over 6,000 yards. Then there was up & comers Jeff Garcia & Dave Dickenson. Yep, all they did was chuck shovel passes. Name me one qb from this era that has had significant playing time in the NFL??? You mentioned Streveler who hung around because of hius athletic ability not because he had the sbility to be a starter. he bounced around like a tennis ball from team to team. Nathan Rourke was chrwed up & spit out by the NFL. But his egos is so big he'll probably try it again with the same results. Why are we even debating this?? Holy ****, do some of us have such bad memories thinking this era of football was better than 30 years ago?

  21. Brady I think should be a lock for Canadian and Wilson for ROY......And really BO should also be the M.O.P too but again...the voters at times seem to have an agenda McCinnis faded bad...and really wasn't the force...or the straw that stirred his teams drink...over looking that due to early season tire pumping...and a team that declined would be a shame...border on crime Our football "writers" need to look at his volume of work the last couple seasons too...All-time great 2023 season stats for a Canadian RB...3rd straight 1000 yard season...2nd in a row leading league...pushing another 2000 combined yard season...those are numbers that would rival any elite RB the last few decades....he has earned it u read my mind as I was typing M.O.P relative to his team....if he was missing...we are really hampered...McInnis..Milligan..who are being pushed by media as front runners...remove them...not a really big loss...

Should they start the parade at the Leg, go up Memorial, down Portage to the Forks? Or, start on Portage, like the Santa Claus parade? They sure do look good right now. Bank all these points now, so that the struggles won't hurt so much.

  30. I can show you some absolutely god awful goaltending in the current nhl right now.... seriously go have a look at the top point seasons in the NHL... it might open your eyes. It's all Gretzky and lemieux... and then it's a pretty cross generational snapshot. Not everyone was putting up those numbers, 2 guys were. I mean Gretzky as an old man with a crippled back in the height of the dead puck era was putting up over a ppg.... Mario unretired from cancer and clowned the rest od the league in the dead luck era. Has overall depth of talent improved across sports? Yup, has training ans nutrition and probably most importantly medical treatment for injuries improved? Again it sure has.... but the best talents are still the best talents and era doesn't change that. Drop a prime flutie into the cfl today he would still rip the league a new *******.

  31. Players from the 90's era...for most part could play now....some of the specialists and offensive talent may struggle....tho depending on what type of game they play too would be key Some of the 90's guys were beats, and many were nicely PED'd up too...I know this as fact as I was there in 90's You take a team with a dedicated FB and RB set....some maulers on the oline and one of that eras's starting QB's....Todays defence in a lot of regards would need to seriously adjust...and they may not have the beef to o so.... Trying to rate era's is a hard thing...too many different things in play...skilled position guys now are definitely way advanced....and they ae in pretty much game shape yr round...back then....25% of guys were maybe

  36. The CFL could attract a lot of talent in those days from the US when that wage gap wasn't so big. Better getting paid in the CFL, than sitting on the PR down there. Those early 90s teams were stacked.

  37. It’s certainly not the only factor. I think you can fairly compare being out coached in game plan and adjustments/play call to roster management. As well as player readiness and execution, which is a good part coaching as well. You’re right too that in several roles we’ve simply not played at the level you’d expect. Wj, zach, and a bunch of other guys haven’t lived up to their own standards. With good to great coaching you don’t see that as much but it still happens. we largely put prep out side of film and playbook install on the locker room. When that fails, the blame has to be split. When it happens repeatedly, it’s much more on coaching.

  38. when I look at bad in game play...wth broken coverage....poor qb decisions....missed assignments...I look toward the lead up prep and how staffs I have been part have had taken each group...ran thru scenarios...all the alterations they may see...and how you adjust and make sure guys are all on same page and are aware of things they may not have even considered....which can minimize and for most part eliminate busts...etc....I am of the belief we don't coach that up enough and Osh puts too much faith in the guys in the room and the vets are on top of it and doing it....hands off at times is good to a point, but you also have to still be that coach and be certain all the boxes are checked...T's crossed and i's dotted...He has himself even admitted that he doesn't do that....maybe he should....The TD that won it against us in last yr's Grey Cup was Houston lack of seeing things...and knowing that pattern...Rose would have easily sniffed that out....but Rose was in civies

  40. Hopefully some of the mdp and mop votes get split between Beverette and Milligan, so Brady can get mop. The thing is Brady actually had a better year last year and didn't win (which was robbery)

  41. Not every Goalie is JS Giguere wearing mattresses for pads these days... there's a lot of **** goaltending in the nhl on a nightly basis right now. People are overly critical of the older Goalie because they see highlight reels of shitty goals, but you can watch highlight reels of shitty goals now too.

  42. Yup. Ford should have modp and Brady moc for sure. Brady also mop? I think the voters will spread the love to the east. I could also see them giving mulligan modp, Brady moc, and some one stupid in the east mop.

  45. Well, I could transfer Warren Moon into the 90s. Look, I am not disputing any of that. But I think guys like Flutie, with the training available now, would be able to make effective reads and plays against current defenses. Then there's Burris, McManus, etc. who played the same type of football in both eras.
    1 point
  46. I was lucky to watch all of them in their prime,Mario the best pure offensive player ever,Gretzky the best vision and passer ever and Flutie who took escaping and making a play out of nothing an art form. Generational talent as they say. 😊
    1 point
  47. Sure...that could be said about many QBs. When they are playing the top of their game they are playing like an MOP. What makes an MOP is consistently doing that. As for Kelly getting what he deserves, too bad. Exactly. If HOF was awarded for the first year and a half of a QBs career then Casey Printers and Jon Jennings would be shoe-ins as well. Offensive risk taking philosophies were night and day to what they are now. QBs were not only allowed to, but offences asked them to, throw balls that would get them benched now.
    1 point
  48. This is true. But lets not pretend that we're comparing apples here. The NFL of today is far different than when Garcia and Flutie got their chances. I'm not trying to take anything away from them, just pointing out how the CFL is viewed today compared to back them. Whether or not their view of it is correct, it's different.
    1 point
  49. Fair question and a tough one. But biggie was also playing in hospital mode and not alone. Thing is, I think any one of 3 primary coaching issues if changed, alone win it for us. At that point, I don’t think it matters which one is greater. As I broke down previously, I don’t think zach has had 1 really good game in the playoffs. And yeah, that really really hurts.

  50. “Luck is the residue of hard work” an unemployed guy in the north west with a ratty hoody and 8 Super Bowl rings. Oh god you’re gonna make me say roster management.meme 🤣 soo true though, we came soo close while dressing walking corpses, dressing guys and not using them, plus scratching guys that would’ve actually been useful. How many times I wonder have we DI’d a guy and not given him one snap? A scary number that’s for sure.
