The top 6 have gone for significant stretches this season with absolutely awful defensive zone play. It's a bit baffling considering they seemed to have it locked down for the bulk of last season. The fact the Jets are winning despite Laine's worst career slump does say a lot about the team, IMO. They're still finding ways to win - and that is what matters above all else. As for Laine, he still is only 20 years old. Remember where Scheifele was when he was 20. Look at him now.

Maybe a luxury move but that's it. A centre is much more crucial at this point. The second line needs a boost.

That's the only option for another team. And all the Jets would have to do is match it. Moreover, is that even realistic in this situation? Also, another team isn't going to necessarily "reap the benefits" if they offer sheet Laine and then have to give up draft picks to acquire him. The compensation to acquire him would be pretty steep: FWIW, I think a bridge deal would work well for both parties at this point. Laine has some ample room for improvement, IMO.

Well, considering he only seemed to show up consistently in November, it speaks to a larger issue at play regarding whatever his struggles are the remainder of this season. I guess the silver lining is it could make contract negotiations easier for the Jets.
