Blue Bombers - 2024 Regular Season - Discussion Thread
wbbfan replied to Noeller's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Starts with Chad Simpson was the guy till he got hurt, and runs up to cam Marshall. How many sacks did we give up in that time line and who did we have for ocs? Product of the environment. Ott has easily been above average for rbs despite not having a qb of note in a good while. Roc now, Williams last year, they had rb by committee before that leading up to Powell. Bc hasn’t be willing to commit to running the ball in a dogs age. Ssk churned through several decently productive guys in committee back to carries being split with Fajardo. Bc and Hamilton have been bringing in established fa starters and seldom using them for years. They would suck at running the ball with Christian Mccaffrey or any other top back. I think we will see Adams at edge mainly but yes, a lot of Hubert and the depth guys. -

Demskis deal looks worse when we don’t have guys that he can aid in the line up. Hes a glue guy and brings tremendous value in his route running and blocking. He understands better than most any one how to adjust his routes and depth to put the D in a bad spot and create a great look for him self or more frequently a guy like lawler / schoen. His age and health, and not running the motion pack I wouldn’t give him that deal again now. But he’s still a tremendous value that severely limits how defenders can play our top wrs. I’d say if broken down into tiers, Brady’s deal would be a 2nd tier problem. Right now, zach looks like the biggest concern. Ba doesn’t make that much keep in mind. Lawlers deal is a big issue just because it’s a remnant of a couple free agencies where the league lost its mind. Top tier is deals we need out from now. 2nd tier is guys that really hurt, but you can have maybe one or two of them. We have a bunch of twos now. Biggie Thomas kramdi etc are all in that tier with Brady. We need a thorough roster weeding in the off season if not sooner. -

Mills is 27 and in his 2nd season as a starter. Butler is way further down the road than mills, Carey has been solid as well. Look at production in the league soo far among rbs. Pretty much every one across the board is neck and neck. Ryquell has been far more effective than most but that’s it. If you swap Brady for any of the starting backs in the league we don’t see any change in out comes this year. But if you take 130-170k difference between Brady and most of those backs and put that on a starter else where to have replaced them with an all star you could see change. -

The top paid wr makes almost 100k more than demski. Vs the second highest paid rb in the league makes 70k less than Brady. Otts rookie is at the min and could/is doing it. You don’t need a current name though, because thats the rb market. When was the last time a team couldn’t find a rb -

He’s an aberration, the exception that proves the rule. Doesn’t matter what passport you have, rb is the lowest value starter on the field. The point is, good teams don’t waste cap space on star Canadians. Did the als or argos have nis making top of the range pay? Did we in 19 or 21? Nope. Bad teams give out bloated contracts like that. Desjarlais, korte, gittens et. Bad teams give Canadians big premium contracts, even at premium positions. We refused to pay drew, couture, Kongbo etc. despite ol being the highest value ni spot, and one of the highest value spots in football. Demski also gets paid more because he does more than most wrs. Hes widely held as the best guy away from the ball, a great blocker and his jet sweep stuff has been critical in our offensive success the last several years. -

How many Canadians have won mop in the past 25 years though? I don’t actually, because the leagues market for wrs has crashed because of the mega deals. Look at what schoen got. Henoc, mostly took over pays from none contenders instead of playing on better teams until he was late in his career and used as a rotational guy. Rb stars don’t make star money. They make 40 cents on the wr dollar mostly. Harris wasn’t the too paid back till he left here and his contract was a huge albatross. I doubt any team is paying half of what we are paying for at rb. Qb, wr, dl, lber, db etc highest paid positional players across the board are imp. Canadians have a higher floor and a lower ceiling save for 2-3 guys in the entire league. -

The difference between a dominant rb and a dominant pass rusher, Sam or S is gigantic. Rbs also don’t have a long shelf life, especially physical runners like Brady. Ryquell Armstead could do a lot of what Brady did last year for Pennies on the dollar. Mills, brown lots of guys would. Like I said it isn’t our biggest waste or even close to it, but it’s a hard cap hit to make work. We have a lot of those currently. And half of em are under performing. -

I love Brady, and what he does in terms of marketing and off the field stuff. I’d hate to lose him. But it you are comparing a defensive player of the year type to a rb in terms of money, I’ll take the defensive guy every day. I’d a sat down with Brady and been 100% with him. I’d give him all the off cap money possible like the appearance thing n junk, but I wouldn’t pay that much for a rb. Part of the problem is the amount we are paying the combination of Brady, Augustine, mci and feltmate is insane. Not to mention 4 roster spots. Especially when our di kr is a natural rb. If mci isn’t ready to be a fb/back up runner Ned contribute on kick cover keep him on the pr, let woli and clercius fill the role. We could’ve kept rosery, used clercius in blocking situations and gone di kr/rb for the back up rb and saved probably 85% of Brady’s salary. Especially with us carrying 7 ol. -

Because there is no reason. The only limit to how good strev is and will be here is how well we use him. -

The designed qb runs should be based around making big plays not grinding out 5. The threat of him on a naked bootleg or option motion after handing off takes a guy out of the run stop and opens a lot up. When he throws on the roll defenders freeze up soo bad. If we ran offences like what we saw and see used with Fajardo and sprinkled in some qb runs it could turn our entire year around. -

Think Ferguson nailed it in that comment. Probably did great in drills, and chalk talk. The draft was deep with high upside guys and guys from us schools, I think we got a sure thing guy and the guys above him were mostly pipe dream lotto tickets. With Samson who can maybe take a step forward next year, Hubert who has been our best Canadian dl, Lawson getting healthy and Schmekel taking a step forward we are in a good spot for nis on dl. When Lawson back I think Hubert will only be behind him in terms of quality. -

I’d love to see Hubert come into camp next year at a lean 270-275 ish and be a guy who can play as much dt as end. -

He was / is a tweener with almost dt size but not quite. And he was underwhelming in basically all tests at the combine. 10 reps 5+ second 40 etc. he played a style of pass rush in college that wasn’t projectable as a pro, speed rushing off the edge. He’s shown to be far smarter and adaptable than expected, guys like that are always valuable. A lot of positions are chess games with the opposition, he’s good at finding ways to win battles and playing with in his tool set. His hand rush and bull rush are good enough to play the edge, and hes a guy who plays faster than he runs. Hes just a damn good football player, not a track athlete type. -

Very likely. My concern would be him playing through an injury that severely limits his mobility, and/or causes a further injury that shuts him down for the year or for good. With the status of our ol and team idk how he’d come back next year either. Guys a beast and loyal as it gets though so who knows. -

Jake Thomas loooool cry great motor, really smart disciplined guy, does a great job of using his hands to disengage and win some battles on the edge. We’ve been dying for a guy like him since kongbo left. Incredible find. If he can develop a bit he can be a game changing rotational guy. -

Tbh at this point zach being on the field is already playing down a man any way. When we also spot the other team and advantage on the line with our interior ol, lack of depth wrs right now and feltmate man it’s like power play football for the opponent all the time. -
Give me laura, paul, naylor/ferguson, blm/matty and maybe another coach type on the panel. Lapo matty and blm go back and forth between the panel and colour and scianitti on pbp. Give Sanchez a shot on colour as well. it’s not a perfect unit, but it’d be drastically better than what we’ve had for a long time. also who ever direct camera work this year / last year replaced with any one who has a clue how to put sports on tv.

The pass behind the line game always ends up leaking into illegal down field blocking. We’ve seen this cycle repeatedly for atleast 25 years and it always takes soo long for them to crack down on the illegal blocks down field.
