2023/2024 CFL (Non Bombers) Off Season News

That’s a good guy for sure. Prolific after transferring up here. Some ncaa experience, had to play a lot of teams down south to earn a shot. Great size and build. A lot of backs are in that 5’10 205 range but frame can vary a lot. He’s really built to play rb, probably would’ve put up a good number on the bench. Some high school track. Success too. Didn’t put up amazing numbers but I think it’s just a case of being a guy that excels in a different range. He’d be a great value pick in the mid to late draft. And we love the oua. -

Could well be. I wouldn’t chase either though. Especially in this draft and with our roster. Hladik or oulette might be available in the 5th/6th with their testing numbers too. 5th n later why not. 1/2nd gotta get value 3rd I’d rather us take a guy who is nfl bound on a flier than a flier on a rb. I think we really need a young ol to groom, a front 6 guy would be big, we need a wr, and with starting an ni db another db that can cover WRs and not just kicks would be great. Fb/rb would be a luxury. And who knows maybe we can swing a trade and get a current roster guy. Brady also put up 3000 yards and 22 tds against better competition. Ike put up 700 ish and 2 tds in 5 seasons. Herzog put up 2200 ish and 29 tds. Ike has size, but height can be an issue for RBs. Ike won’t remotely have the power to be a bruising back and will have to be balanced. Brady is the perfect size and build for a power back. -

Nailed it. I feel like the 1on1s are far more subjective in the cfl than most places. The differences in competition is gigantic. I also feel like the drill work out stars don’t shine in the league that often. Herzog and Michael had pretty decent testing. Especially the Michael as he’s got that size. He’s ask a converted wr. 5’8 201 4.55 39” vert 10’ broad 6.94 3 come 4.2 shuttle 6’1 225 16 reps 4.51 35.5” 10’2 6.71 4.19 If we grabbed one of those guys as a camp flyer with a mid to late pick say 4th or after that’d be solid. They may well go before that though. That’s trevis smith, I was thinking of another guy but smith is about the biggest monster we’ve seen in a while. -

Another lber idr their name some pretty heinous domestic abuse stuff. I for sure think there is a precedent, if Kelly’s case ends up at that point. I do think Kelly is a ticking time bomber though. Glory days. Same era the nfl had Alstott. nfl fb useage is up a significant portion of late as well with bigger more athletic guys available at those te/hback positions don’t be surprised to see fb continue to rise. Especially considering the rb by committee that is popular. The linemen are always the best guys to listen to. Tsn needs to learn that lesson. -

I mean, it is a pro combine. You would think that the venue would be appropriate. But then last time it was here it was a gong show for the 40 as well. More important factors include the quality and prep of the surface (the big issue last time) and the quality of electronic timing equipment. Though who knows maybe it was just Randy sitting on an old stop watch. But either way, we've got a good chunk of 195-210 pound guys running 5s and some 260-270+ guys running significantly faster. If they are all running under the same conditions, which just has to be the case, it's a pretty big dip in athleticism. Especially when you consider the bigger 260-270 guys are still C grade NFL athletes as well. The other categories have some awful numbers too. How are you gonna do the bench press and only be able to put up 2 reps of 225lbs at 200+ lbs? Like the dude cant do push ups. The first rep in the bench often bounces off the guy as much as any thing in football combines. If you're 6'+ and 220+ running a 5.2 and jumping 24" in the vert you either better be the most talented and cunning football player in history, or better be a holder/snapper. You don’t need to reach for a fullback that’s going to play eight snaps a game. Mos intensifies. I think you can dress a canadian super package/sub guy. Some one who is a TE/Hback/Fb Body type up to an undersized athletic centre or down to a big WR. And have that guy fill a TON of roles. Both goal line packages, fg, kick cover/up back and return etc. But that guy has to have a position that they can sub into for an injury, WR would be the easy one, and they have to really excel on teams. Maybe they are the back up punter/kicker, long snapper, holder etc. The easiest way to get and develop that guy though, is to draft a reasonably athletic Lber. Like we have for the entire time walters has been here. They already have the hit guys and move bodies mind set you need. -

It’s a good thing this draft has plenty of high level and ncaa talent. The athletic performance really wasn’t stellar for a lot of guys at the combine. Hladik fb who stands 6’4 230 and rb Anthony soles 6’2 220 ran best times of 5.0 and 5.19 in the 40. A lot of db/wr/lbers in the 4.8 and slower range. Many of those guys filling out with 26-30” verts and single digit 225 reps. I wonder how much of it is these guys not being polished in the track skills, and how much is just low athleticism. It’d be interesting to average out the positions or take the highest drafted lowest athletic outlier and chart the numbers vs the ras and nfl averages. Maybe the cfl should invest money in a program that helps provide strength and conditioning coaching to cis and junior players. If the league managed to half the athletic difference from the average player at the nfl and cfl combine respectively, we would see a whole lot more value return from drafts and better calibre of play in the league. -
Yes, because every other team and the league thought he was out of football and done. He wasn’t ranked because of it and no one considered him. Otherwise he’s a been in the top couple of picks. I think people really miss how prolific he was in college. If he never got hurt and sat out he would’ve been a top 3 round nfl pick with ease. Loffler out performed his draft position but he was always a high upside guy. Injuries derailed his draft stock and his career. Not a hoodwink, but a damn good bargain for sure.

Crying about the likes and comments on his posts I guess? -
Of course you can find those outliers. But you can’t rely on finding that soo far down. That’s why we generally see a run on long term nfl talent right around that point in the draft. It goes from a trying to win on a scratched to a lottery ticket to keno. Off the top of my head our best late late pick under walters has been exhume a career teams guy. Albeit a damn good one.

I’d be happy if that was the extent of the change. Maybe not giving the option of kick offs on fgs any more would be ok too. You’re probably right. But I don’t think it’s fair to compare apples to orange league to league. If that’s the case it’s just lazy on the cfls part. -

Agree. And tbh a lot of guys will use injury time outs on kick cover if they don’t play the next drive. -
I love doman/ringmaiden and I’m really happy to see the cfl in bc making a come back. But damn they got some whiners between the franchise and media. I have no idea of the nature of their partnership on the draft, free agency etc. but I’m sure both had a say, and were probably reasonably happy with the hauls on draft day. And I’m sure both would love to have a better couple of drafts in retrospect. But I do get drafting for need on a dynasty with limited picks in low quality drafts. I don’t believe any one would be making ego picks disregarding what the rest of the brain trust thinks. I’m also sure we will be looking to restock the cupboards and pick high upside guys. This is a too heavy draft and we have lots of picks. Weve made a lot of hard moves this off season that scream of an end to the old boys club. The drafts will be a big litmus test for camp and the season.

Man I don’t like the auto scrimmage from the 40 after a td. Maybe if it’s a none offensive td and make it automatic after a fg. I’d rather move the teams closer and make it slower speed for td kick offs. And or the no one can move until the ball is caught. Kr is a pivotal part of the Canadian football identity. -
Shouldn’t we have the posts going for the count down with player numbers then? even better, we get training camp crazy. It’s extra special crazy cus we’re all shaking off the football withdrawals.

Honestly that runs all the way up to the early 2ks. Some of the most baffling calls ever back then. I remember a rtp call for ac in a late season must win type game in 99/2000. Montreal got like 6 cracks at it from the one yard line and got shut down each time. They got an off side call which might’ve been a bit soft but probably fine. But the rtp was egregious. The fans threw stuff on the Field for like 10 minutes and eventually we got a crowd penalty. Mtl scored and won, but I always remember that as a culture defining moment. Ritchies team expected to win and fought like one was against them. It was the light at the end of the dark ages. And as much as it was hating to lose, it was hating to get jobbed. The stuff defences got away with on milt up till 2001 ish was insane too. A lot of guys got mugged back then, but WRs on bad teams got it like linemen in the 50s. the blown onside punt call with time running out in dunigans year with Calgary as a hc. All the insane cheap shots on khari by ed Philion. and I saw soo many guys take runs at blinks ankles especially when he had that turf toe injury. reffing is bad now. But it used to be a serious problem. The deal with the nfl for the option year etc that started the joint ref stuff helped a lot.
