2024/2025 CFL (non-Bomber) Off-Season Thread
wbbfan replied to WinnipegGordo's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I was really impressed with his uptake last year. He went from lost in short yardage and not really able to fill any roster role to a pretty good block n push guy. Excited to see year two from last years rookie crop. We got a tremendous mix of athletic upside, and strong intangibles. -
I miss the super dogs and even the cross fit thing they did once at a bomber game. I’d love to see some thing unique.

Really hope we get a big concert for half time that isn’t some country fried hick stuff.

The bombers and macdon, who are a long long time corporate sponsor, should team up for a better version of this shirt. -

Year to year for Zach and I’d say a very strong chance this is his last. -

Man, dare to dream. If we eliminate Jakes snaps this year, we likely have a D that can challenge the 21 unit and certainly be the best one since then. Yeah, I feel some positions are already set in stone. If Vaughters stays healthy I don't think any performance in camp or PS takes his job. Good point, Especially in today's CFL. Ratio breakers are on every team now. The league has really good Canadian starters at basically every position these days. We need to be championship-oriented to the point that flipping a spot like G to Imp isn't a concern. No hesitation. I think we have the guys who can take up a starters role in multiple areas, we don't need to force guys onto the field. https://3downnation.com/2025/03/21/blue-bombers-have-not-had-contract-extension-discussions-with-franchise-qb-zach-collaros/ In other news, water is wet and fire is hot! -

Yeah, those two are both the exception that proves the rule IMO. Plus, both Clercius and MCI bring tremendous versatility. Idk if MCI will evolve to be a feature back, if he does the miss match will be insane. Luckily, he can slowly get his feet wet and learn his craft in an ideal situation here. Even if he never becomes a feature back, as an FB, teams, and package guy he is of tremendous value. If he can be a good change of pace back and package offensive player, that is a gigantic win. I didn't get to see nearly enough of him running the ball to gauge that, but his physical tools should translate to a high floor as a runner. I'd love to see him grow as a pass catcher who can run out of the backfield routes and stuff from the TE spot. Doesn't need amazing route-running skills, just the ability to get to a spot and catch the ball. He certainly isn't a tester. And he has the intangibles to over come that. I like ends that have a better first step, but he is going to be a worthwhile project for someone. And I think out side of the top 2 ish rounds, (1on1s depending) I think he will offer good value. -

Totally agree, great point. Moving on from guys like BA, Biggie, and maybe Kyrie unless he's somehow back to peak form, and limiting Jakes snaps is huge on D. Consistency on the OL, and a new offensive coaching staff will be big. -

In-league scouting is poor right now. Mostly it's PR guys that will float around mid-season and into Tcs. Teams seldom look at other teams PR cuts other wise any more. -

I think they had a vision, but it is a divisive approach. I get what they were going for, and I think it might even work. But it is risky, and not a good look for a team coming off the GC loses and hosting the cup at home. People don't want to see us fill up our middle back roster, especially when we've lost some of the high-paid guys in FA. -

I was thinking about that too. He looks soft in his build, but his frame could hold a good bit more weight and he is really strong, with good disengage. Yeah, the 40 is ugly for his weight, but if he had that twitchy first step and just wasn't a track guy it'd be fine. I'm not sure the guy could touch the net on a basketball rim with that jump though. Maybe if he gets with the right SnC coach he could become something, but he's already been in the NCAA for a couple of years if it hasn't happened at this age it isn't too likely. Worse measurables than Bennett, but better intangibles. Tbh, I'd look at him in the late 3rd or lower if he tests well in 1-on-1s. He could be a guy who gains weight and utility and then does a bunch of jobs. But I don't look at him and see anything that says first-round pick or NFL invite. CFL teams are soo deeply in love with guys who go to the NCAA, even if they don't ever play. (I know we took MCI and Clercius like this, but they were stellar athletes at least, and lower picks) -

Oof those numbers are ugly. He’s gonna have to hope to be one of those guys who plays fast / tests poor. Unless he retests and pops much better numbers I doubt he get an nfl look. He looks like he treads on acceleration but still isn’t explosive as an athlete. Football iq, decisiveness, motor and strength seem to be his game. He does seem to drop back, play lber and rushing from different positions and angles. Seems like more of a football player than an athlete or tester. But he really isn’t explosive. -

We have the dollars, but the only deals we'd entertain are high-value low-risk ones. The upcoming NFL cuts should be pretty alluring before and after their TCs, plus it's a deep draft and we have guys who could back to us. A lot of what is left in free agency is pretty fringe guys one way or another. Likely we will see them move between the draft and pre-season. -

Soo strange that they report on it now. I think news broke like a month ago? Wonder if they just do it to keep up a quota. -

I suspect the Europe deal is a much better quality of life than coaching here. Most cos or better at competitive programs from hs in the us on up live pretty rough lives during the season. -

Those are the smart moves. AFL is still a thing, some semi pro too. And the worst move is to continue sitting waiting for a D1 deal with a big chunk of NIL, which seems to be what he keeps doing. Semi pro and CFL would allow him to still be drafted into the NFL. Wonder what he'd say if asked about the covid money the CFL requested lol. -

https://3downnation.com/2025/03/17/canadian-lb-devin-veresuk-earns-nfl-attention-with-impressive-pro-day-numbers/ Extremely impressive pro day for veresuk. “Veresuk checked in at six-foot-two, 232 pounds then recorded a 36-inch vertical, 10-foot, four-inch broad jump and burned a 4.47-second 40-yard dash — as clocked by an NFL scout — along with a 4.47-second short shuttle and 7.19-second three-cone drill. He also repped 225 pounds on the bench press 27 times.” -

I'm also optimistic that we will see considerable improvements this year here even with Kolo. Healthy Bryant, Neuf, Lofton should progress and pick up where he left off at worst, and Wallace could take a big step forward other wise and Randolph should be ready to take a job at Rt or RG if needed. I think Vanterpool could be a high-level starting guard this year if required as well. If we replace Kolo one way or another, we could have an elite OL by mid-season IMO. In Wallace and Randolph in particular, I see critical intangibles that Dobson never showed here. -

I'll add, I don't think Dobson would've been in the elite of the top tier at guard if he had an elite C all year. It would have brought up his lowest level of play early in the season, But since dropping weight he hasn't had the same push/leg drive/ punch move. He used to be able to knock guys silly at 350. he was allegedly down to 315-320 last year, and certainly noticeably more trim. But he doesn't seem like he just lost sloppy weight. He is notably not the same guy he used to be. We seldom saw flashes of his potential, in the way of pancakes and downfield rumbling. He did the basic job of a guard but didn't show the upside of why we drafted him. I don't know if its a SnC issue, or diet, or what. But even the nastiness was gone. And that's why I wouldn't pay him what he got or close to it. I don't want to see a high-potential guy turn into a high-floor guy. If he struggled more with consistency and flashed more upside It would have been more tempting to keep him. Plus, every one not named desjarlais has struggled inside in pass pro here. Gray got it much worse than dobson with a much better RT beside him. His footwork was fine, his angles, hip drive, etc were not what you want. He'd try to lock up and counter with pure strength but just didn't have the explosion for that to work. Pass pro was a unit problem last year. Too many weak links, too many guys out of position too many guys hurt too much kola. Run pro is what concerns me with dobson. he should've been able to get down field more against the smaller 3 techs and didn't. OL play in general last year was junk league-wide. The continual allowance of holding to such an extreme degree removed the ability for guys to separate from the bottom half of the guards in the league. We can agree to disagree though, as he's gone and neither of us are sad to see him go for that payday he got.
