Blue Bombers - 2023 Regular Season - Discussion Thread

Yeah. I really don’t see us adding a lot of salary at the deadline. But the cash from jj lawler grant rose Darby Hansen and even miller is pretty significant. Some rough napkin math based on leaked contracts and estimates id put it at about 325k. And that’s a bit conservative and doesn’t take into count some of those guys clearing a second 6 game stint -

I think it could be any where from 150 to 175. Idk guy lives his best life at his previous rate and he’s locked in with the community. Might even be incentive laden deal. Though if we go from Augustine to a drafted rookie that will make up the large majority of that room. If they lock him up this year they could front load bonus money with room under the cap from all the 6 games and lawler. He’s the lowest flight risk on the team. -
🤮 walker would play a bunch at edge.

Roster management bad! I think jj usually misses practices around this time of year, and in general. Not sure it actually means any thing. last week Brady had the angle and was near the side line past first down yardage. Instead of going out or going as far as he could and trying to hand fight for a yard or two, he just turns back up field and runs out of his way to blast some rider db. Probably didn’t make a years difference if it did he probably got a bit less. But that violent relentless play late in a blow out win was beautiful. If Brady gets 20 Carries in a post season game, no one is beating us. Is jj ever 100%? Love the guy but he’s always hurt

I checked and they do not. Globals in the nfl are players from outside of Canada and the us. might drive that price up too. Personally, great Canadian ol are harder to find that good imp tackles. -

I’m sure they are meeting the market value from desjarlais deal. Boy we are gonna see a serious dip in global talent once that is in place. -

When ever I see a 6’ 6’1 wr who runs a 4.5 or slower I expect an extremely polished guy or a guy who is a really good football player. Like Bailey. It’s a strange fit, I feel like we if any thing could use speed/explosiveness in wr prospects. Though that guy does show some elite leaping ability 41” vert and 11’+ broad jump is a big indicator of a twitchy explosive type. And that type does very well on the big cfl field. The 4.5 is in line with that too. That combination is what you see from elite quick guys who lack the tyreek hill top gear. his 10/20 yard splits, shuttle and 3 cone show that twitch change of direction ability. That said I don’t see how he could make an impact this year. Idk, wish we were bringing in safteys, dts, kr, and maybe some global punter/kick off bodies. Like hackett last year. -
And I love it. I think the riders are a new front office and coaching staff plus one year from being one year away. Cfl turn around can happen really fast. But not when you are in a toxic waste dump. And especially not when you refuse to clean up the toxic waste dump.

I wonder if we see it take a big step forward soon. It’s gotten a bit better here n there going from many glaring holes to a few. As much as mos preaches 1 week at a time, this team knows what parts of the game and season are important. Brady and our ol has taken over a good few games this year. If we can run none stop for 10 minutes of clock time in the 4th in the summer, good luck stopping the run on us when it’s cold.

And effort. Which are both a no go. Any one remember sportsnet doing all that stuff like idk 15-20 years ago including the Damon Allen qb challenge?

True. We’ve had some really deep camps but you can never have enough wr talent. I’m not worried about us losing any one any time soon or struggling to fill spots. But you never know when some one gets hurt or you find the next schoen. -
Same. Honestly most of the bites from mos werent note worthy. He’s a sharp football mind but he’s really tight lipped. kinda ot but I’d love a weekly show on tsn with plop ford maybe barker, talking about the previous week and the next week. Strategy, player performance, coaching stuff. They could have guys like brown join in now and then etc.

Former Bombers in NFL (and spring leagues) news

Real safe bet I imagine. -
I don’t think it’s too big a deal either way you use it. The CC is no where near reliable enough for it to matter. I’ll say too I don’t care for the punitive and limited nature of challenges today. The problem earlier on was 1 the CC was slow as hell, 2 they had ticky tack pi rules so people used it as a Hail Mary and 3 they had too much change with it and rules all in a short time. No slow mo, not wanting to make the field crew look bad so making it harder to over turn, plus a lot of rule changes. I’d rather they get calls right and speed things up else where.

He is really tentative, though that just costs us when it doesn’t get used. He had a pretty good streak of losing them for a while.

Yep. Really got a tough deal. imo yes. Poor man’s JSK. He’s a guy who can rack up a lot of tackles especially on bad teams. He isn’t a guy making an impact with his plays. Similar to Awe. I broke down our game against him his and biggies average depth of tackle and anticipated gain per play vs actual. despite playing at twice the depth biggie was tackling a few yards shallower and they got a fraction of the anticipated yards per play vs gaining more than anticipated. Sankey is a good tackler but he’s not making tackles your other front 6 guys wouldn’t make. He’d be useful next to a guy like biggie or kyrie who can do a lot and cover a lot of distance. But he’s not a keystone in a good defence. A lot of guys can fill that role. I’d love to have a guy like that to rotate and take biggie off ol, but I wouldn’t pay much for it. -

I mean we haven’t had many good QBs of any type in the past 30 years. Every running qb not named Streveler was hated too. I’d say Glenn surpassed the game manager and his un fortunate anti clutch history kind of makes him less manager and more some thing else. I’d say the only real game manager we had in that time who was at least a starting quality qb was Nichols. Post dunigan, how many average or better starting QBs have we had? 4 or 5? -

Thats true. For the most part it was the O and teams constantly putting the D in bad situations and leaving them on the field for long stretches. As our offence goes so goes our team. -
And or mos listening. We suck at challenges and it might all be rotten. Mos always has.
-
Haha. If it happens again tell him to meet you in Winnipeg. It’ll be like a lotr moment with bomber fans running in. it’s pathetic that they still don’t have it working right. I’ve got some random ass casino page sports betting site that updates the stats pretty quick. Some one should get fired for this debacle.

Totally agree. This is a big step in who we are and if we will continue to fall into the same deficiencies during the stretch run. Back 3rd of the season, we are healthy rested and have no cap issues or excuses. I expect we will roll up the sleeves now. No more lazy crazy kick cover, no coasting and spotting teams leads. Bombers open 7 point favorites. I bet the line moves pretty well too. Hamilton to cover and the under probably make really good money this week. -

If there is ever a time to catch the bombers, when you clearly do not want to play us at home after we lost, it’s on the road in the east right before a bye and after we blow some one out. Last year we lost the streak to mtl at home before a bye though in a back to back, then we lost again in Hamilton before another bye. Then losing at bc before the final bye though after clinching the wf. -

After we dropped 45 on ssk we followed that up with the beat down by bc. After the beat down on bc we had Zach knocked out vs edm in a game we struggled with a lot till brown put up a massive performance. We dropped 47 on the ALs then lost the ldc. the exception this year was week 1 we put 42 on the cats to win by 9, in a game blm looked horrid in. Then followed that up with the 45 on ssk when Harris put up the shallowest 414 3 and 0 while losing by 18. It’s always tough to follow that kind of offensive success the next week. We always seem to struggle a little extra with the game after we blow some one out even more. Going into the 8th week since our only bye with the biggest game of the regular season, rematch vs tor some guys could be a little flat vs ham too. I expect Hamilton to be juiced up to play us, as they have been each time since 19 gc. That said, I expect us to wake up and grind out a tough gritty character win. -
CFL - 2023 Regular Season - Discussion Thread

the tldr to a long and for some boring post is that innovation came to the spread to pass and spread to run offence. It didn’t come to fb. These offences found ways to take tacklers out of the equation while allowing for more of an offensive threat with more creative twists A lot happened over 20 ish years that killed the fb, 2 back pro form offence. In the 70s the first wave of spread offence innovators started to have great success. First at hs then college and the nfl. From mouse davis to bill Walsh. These guys had their first batch of disciples take power in the 80s, and saw the most successful nfl version in the 49ers. In the cfl, when don Mathew’s was playing a lot of cover 0 teams at first tried to counter with going heavier with double tight sets. But then real success came with 5 and 6 wr spread sets and just getting the ball out quickly. At that point the fb was already becoming rarer. The west coast possession passing offence that the nfl hadn’t embraced beyond a few coaches had flourished in colleges. That created a plethora of highly accomplished QBs with no pro path other than the cfl. Mean while at the college level talented athletic big guys made bigger impacts at other positions and wanted to play those positions with better pro futures. So the talent pool at fb fell, while wr talent pools stayed pretty high. QBs became more and more athletic, which makes pistol and shot gun even more viable. The on set of pistol greatly reduced the wild snaps to the qb. In the late 90s the zone run scheme had the same explosion in disciples as the spread had in college and hs in the 70s and 80s. Teams who wanted to dominate with the run found it easier to run fewer big bodies the defence has to have more db types to cover more WRs who aren’t likely to beat a block and make a tackle one on one with a rb. A full time fb just means a db is off for a lber and that’s an extra guy in the box playing the back field. The spread to run concept and the flex 11/21 packages with pass catching tes put two guys on the field in place of the fb. Kr types who could be schemed in to run and catch out of the slot while running jet motion, and big guys who can block down but can also run and catch and be hard to tackle for dbs. All while the fb position stayed stagnant. the two rb sets were replaced with motion. A wr on jet motion before the snap or at the snap is harder to defend and opens more gaps plus demands a contain guy on the edge. This and mobile QBs created ways to take a tackler out of the equation. With the size of the field in the cfl it was always much more suited to the extra passing threat especially stretching the field side line to sideline. Even more so now with the hash mark move. Though teams have become soo homogenous that they we now see the bombers running two extra ol and a fb while defences just done have the depth and talent to counter that with. Funnily enough last year was the first time the nfl saw an increase in fb use in over a decade too. Idk great talent but with Habba sitting on the pr that’s a big spend to get his rights. If we were gonna spend those assets we should go get a big dt. -
