Blue Bombers - 2024 Regular Season - Discussion Thread

Hope he doesn’t piss hot. -
The same kenny lawler that was our pass game in 21? The same one who nearly put up 1k in edm in 12 games then again in 12 games here? Laughable. If lawler isnt a workhorse, then there isn't one in the entire league right now.

I expect adams and maybe hubert will draw back in and an imp db will go off. Even with jake taking too many reps, if Garbutt, adams and woods are on for most of the run plays edm won't have a ton of success. I also expect we will have nichols cover the out side run fit on his edge again. Too bad we don't still have a bigger Lber who can come on to help gap cancel. Any of Gemmel, Petrishen, Moses, and Thomas would look darn good against Edmonton. -
I mean 21-22 was nearly identical, last year he missed 1/3 and instead of being wr1 with out much support we had demski going for 1k, schoen, lawler still getting 900, drew and bailey combining for another 1k, plus brady getting 2k from the line with 500 receiving.

We saw it last week a handful of times, its always been one of our looks. It's just we used to use it for the slow developing screens more, but its been a thing we do for a while. Even longer ago when zach was MOP zach, and we would run the hurry up with the heavy set we would throw out of that base a lot more. It was the safety net back with harris and nichols, and back to plops time with blink/khari. -

Yeah, I really didn't want to see buck on the field when he still had a career lol. I'll say this too, with how thin we are at back up qb now, I bet we see a ton more of that 3 target pass concept. Its pretty similar to what june jones was running in hamilton back in the day. Keep zach up right, give him as much of a pocket as we can, have him throw tight windows. If they take away the windows? check down to brady. -
I havent seen any degradation in Kenny. Our passing offence sucks for multiple reasons right now. Bucks game plan, zachs limitations, mainly terrible pass pro. But also we have had a lack of depth at WR. Teams double kenny and wait for us to beat them with the filler. Im sure he isn't 100%, but if we started using him like we used to, and tossing him stuff that gave him a chance to make plays It'd happen all over again.

Buck Pierce upon hearing that flashbackdog.meme (imbedding images here never works for me) Me either. I mean, I loved the guys heart and toughness. But as a passer? ick. -
Yeah that was one nice toss. I think we actually see deep opportunities in some of those clips, but I don’t think zach had the time to hit them. I laughed too hard when he started talking about loving to see the check downs. We know Paul, we know. His talk about athletic QBs made me think he really may not have wanted to run that strevy package at all. Which could be why it only ever devolved, even now. Id really like to see an evolution of our base zone read with sweep motion. Stay with the bunch iso form and clear out the wr, then run a wheel route with the jet motion player, and have them start the motion earlier. Have Brady leak out for a medium hook if it isn’t a run. 0 motion the inside most wr, usually chip guy on the line, as a second jet/comet motion guy to give us layers and a check down. Teams are coming down hard on the jet crosser in the flats, and the run gaps. It probably requires a bit of a boot on the end read but we’d have tons of openings for big plays.

I get what you’re saying, but the nature of scouting in general today is that you nit pick every single possible tiny flaw. No one has clean scout reports ever any more. On the nfls draft scout page they use a 3-8 grading system. 8 is perfect 5.5 is priority free agent. The vast majority of prospects who play in the cfl and nfl as rookies every year fall between a 5.1 and a 6.5, the big differentiator these days between nfl talent and cfl talent, is size and athleticism. We get a few guys league wide like Adam’s each yeah, every nfl team gets one or two like that. Now the difference between elite nfl players and average nfl starters is a big gap in terms of the chess game and polish. Tyreek hill was a 5.1. Marvin Harrison jr, the 4th overall pick, was a 6.83. Qb Bryce young, the first overall pick, was a 6.82. At the back end of the 3rd round they are drafting guys who are high 5 range. Dalton schoen was a 5.19. Chris smith was a 5.95. These were their flaws. Weaknesses Room for improvement with release against press. Allowed grabby coverage too much leeway in disrupting his routes. Needs better route efficiency without as much stutter-stepping. Might not have enough blow-by speed to consistently outrun NFL corners. Had uncharacteristic drops in 2023 Weaknesses Weighed in at 204 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine; since 2003, no QB who weighed fewer than 207 pounds at the combine has been drafted in Round 1. Durability will be a concern due to slight frame. Has a tendency to run receivers up against the boundary. Leaves his lower half behind on drive throws at times. Needs to prove he can find reads quickly and stay on schedule. Deep throws come out flat and lose energy late. Doesn’t run as often as he could to counter the rush and pick up first downs. -

Same. I also thought I could just watch the game on one of my streaming services that has ctv, or their app. But nope, need to log into cable to get it through that means. Did people with farmer vision even get it? -

Soo strange to go after him when we cut multiple better lbers this year. Bjb on ctv didn’t draw well. I don’t watch network tv, does any one know if it was advertised? I wonder how much of the dip was cable cutters struggling to stream it? I ended up watching it on tsn plus channel on the app. -

IMO game shape isn’t as big a deal for qb. Zach wasn’t in game shape for a few weeks, a 20 some thing athletic guy should be fine. Rust, sure an issue. But lots of guys have come out of nowhere away from football. Now the spleen making him wanna call it quits, I can see that. zachs health has been an issue all this year and much of last though. Nature of a 36 year old qb. Rider fans used to say 1 shot away from missing the season, and it was bs. But now, not so much. spent it piss poorly. I mean 300k of that was lawler who played what half a season? The two worst ols, one wasn’t markedly worse. I think you can rightly argue better coaching and wrs for Cornelius, but the fit of the coaching in sask was better. Any qb who could hit timing routes would’ve had comparable success. That’s why they let him go. If both were the same height and weight as zach, only cornelius would’ve ever gotten a sniff of pro ball. -

2022 9 starts 1 bye week 6-14 1901 pass yards 8 tds 6 ints 5 rushing tds 291rush yards 243 total yards per game 1.44 tds per game. vs Last 9 games of 2400 yards 10 tds 9 ints 57 rush yards 273 yards per game 1.11 tds. that Edmonton team was a 4 win team tied for last in the league. The riders won 6 finishing 3rd in the west. The elk were 1-4 when Cornelius took over. The riders were 4-5, hands down better than the team Cornelius took over. Maybe as mobile as zach. -

I’d rather over pay dl than most positions. Especially a 2gap player. Run fits are soo much tighter in the cfl than down south. qft, nothing is more worrisome as a bomber fan then a qb coming off the bench. We’ve been torched sooooo many times by back ups over the years. I would actually love to see the chess match of our secondary vs mbt as the starter. -

lol you’re saying you don’t value stats then saying wins are important as a stat. Stats, will get you a multi million dollar career in sports. What is Cody Fajardos record as a starter compared to zach, Khari jones, Kevin Glenn and Mike Reilly? What was the starter record for Matt Nichols and Tim tebow, and why did teams throw away two “winning” qbs? Seriously though, is tee Martin a better college qb than Peyton manning? Dan Marino over Montana? Blm over rourke, Matt Nichols top 5 qb in bomber history? Agreeing to disagree is fine, but if you think Collaros was good in 18, that’s just silly. Almost as silly as ermagerd qb wins! -

It’s scary how similar his performance that year was to this year and the last year in ham. But maybe it’s an indicator that if we deal with the rush better that he might bounce back for the stretch. -

Kramdi isn’t a top 3 Sam in the league. Tfl and sacks are not primary success indicators. You’re also talking about the difference of 1 sack over 14 games. We use Kramdi in the off tackle gap run fit, and blitz him which very few teams do. We have used that look for a long time, and tbh Nichols is drastically better at it. Kramdi isn’t a top 3 Sam on our team. His coverage has improved since the early season struggles, he’s not some big issue that needs to be fixed like Thomas. We can generally cover for him. But he isn’t a strength. He’s a role player making elite db money. Ol, and Dl are much bigger issues we should fix ratio wise. we’ve used our Mac to spy plenty in the dime set. I imagine we will do a 2 man spy game with both when the Mac is on / if a rb stays in other wise we will spy with 1. The big key will be to maintain contain on the edge. It should be easy enough for them to execute than getting pressure. I’d put Hubert back on, take Habba off for Adams. Hubert is more assignment sound in contain by a lot, as is garbutt. I’d use stunts, pinch, jam, and slides to move the gap for him to run through around. Especially to take the gap away from the middle when we don’t have spy or have the 30 front out. It’d also pair well to create that hole on the blind side edge and send the db blitz package while rotating the lber and secondary to cover for it. 100%. We can play more aggressive gap cancellation, we just need to not get caught up in run blitzing thing and give up big plays on easy passes. -

I think nostalgia is kicking in in 18 zach. He has 3 games with 270 or more yards, with a combined 1 td and as many games with 106 yards passing or less, 1 Game with more than 1 td (2), 2 games with more tds that picks (both 1-0) with 5 games where he tossed more picks than tds. 2999 passing yards 9 tds 13 picks in 14 starts, with 7.8 per completion. This year in 13 starts he has 2932 yards 8tds 13 picks 8.3 per completion. Prior to that was the legendary 9 start 0 win ticat season. -

Zach hadn’t looked good in a long time in 19 too. any way you cut it, the available QBs list is ugly. You seldom get a guy that going into it, you would be happy with being qb1 out of camp. -

Saskatchewan traded Collaros to Toronto in 19, and the riders won the west that year. In 22 the als finished 2nd in the east and traded Vernon Adams jr to bc, who was also a play off team. That’s just off the top of my head. Was Arbuckle traded mid season once? Edmonton traded us Matt Nichols mid season, I believe we traded away Willy mid season too. In the cfl you take trade value when you can get it. -

You mean like tyreek hill running the wildcat? the skill floor and experience level is a huge huge factor. Last year or the year before the REDBLACKS ran out of QBs and ran out a wr in the wildcat for I think a quarter? We’ve also seen guys forced into holding for kickers on short notice, which is much harder than taking a snap under centre. -

Yep. If he was 6’1 and 205 lbs, would he have a pro career? I don’t think so. it’s not hard, unless you have some the odd centre that fires it off really fast like kelce did in the nfl. If you play a ball handling position, taking a snap should be easy and fast to learn. not under centre. -

https://www.foxsports.com/stories/usfl/usfl-draft-2022-philadelphia-stars-take-qb-bryan-scott https://nfldraftblitz.com/2022/10/13/xfl-profile-qb-bryan-scott-the-aaron-rodgers-of-division-iii/ The Aaron rogers of division 3 lol. Spring league MVP, a lot of bouncing around. Good athleticism, and good arm talent. Gets it out quick, and seems to have a good feel for the rush. It's a real interesting move. Kind of guy I'd like to have on the Pr, or as qb3 ideally. He's pretty old already, 29 years. But guys like that on their last shot can be dangerous, like khari jones. Hope we don't sign dolegala.
