Game Day Thread- Week Five: Winnipeg @ BC July 14, 2018
wbbfan replied to Wanna-B-Fanboy's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
in general the 3rd quarter seems to be a serious issue for us. We tend to go into the half time with momentum then just fail to launch in the second half. Un characteristic of nichols we saw some brutal throws leading to turn overs. Id suspect its rust. Idk the last time he had a 3 pick game. hes gotten away with a few but not that could total that many in one game. We also saw some uncharacteristic bad drops from darvin adams. The red zone calll will ruffle some feathers no doubt. I like going for it, im all for it. Im also heavily in favor of going for it instead of punting just out side of FG range. But if we are gonna go for it and go with streveler running we got to play action. Freeze the defense dont let them key on streveler and crash down. Shovel option and get him out of the pocket. Streveler isnt ready to lead the team every game game in and game out. But he is way further along then one could expect. if any thing throw him in for some package stuff more when the offense is stagnant. Also we got a few roughing the passer calls that were just awful. -
1 First star goes to harris. 13 rushes 139 yards 2 tds 4 catches for 29 more. beast mode. 2 Randle gets second star with 3 or 4 great pass knock downs in the clutch and a couple great wrap n tackles. 3 JSK + bighill combine for the most formidable 1 2 punch at lber weve had since we last won a grey cup. Honorable mention to demski for some great runs and getting 10 touches. hh the on side kick. perfect execution and play call. thing of beauty.

Marshall Ferguson on how Lapo uses Streveller
wbbfan replied to johnzo's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
thats why he would be rostered as a DI and not a qb. Other positions can play qb, qb cant play other positions. Its staggering to think of the nature of offenses in the era that was done. The game is soo much more opened up and in favor of the offenses but we dont see any one get even close. In the year ish before and after i think we saw flirting with big numbers like that too. -
its 100% true.

None qbs can and have replaced qbs. You have to be able to replace them because it does happen that the three go down. Plus the ability to have none qbs throw passes etc. https://cfldb.ca/rulebook/scrimmage/player-restrictions/#r4s5a6 -
cant compare percentages of income with a country where one state has more people then all of our country. the subsidies make farming in the US drastically more profitable.
-
I did over seas shipping out side all day for a couple years, id rather be inside atleast I know what to expect.
-
coal has been flirting with a real come back over seas, if not more then flirting. Farmland in canada isnt nearly what it is down in the states but it the gross numbers do inflate the view a bit.

what they need is a qb with a quick release, good zip on his passes and a basic ability to read the D pre snap and at the snap. They have the wr talent to carry the load. Mobility would also be good, but the simplicity of throw this or that depending on read makes the skill cap a lot lower. One of the biggest struggles with mobile qbs is when to run and when to throw. Bridge can be that guy imo, but itd take time. And they are not gonna give him the time and dedication to make it work.

Thanks for sharing. Ive been wondering to my self about the bombers using him as DI instead of as a qb. using him in place of flanders in some packages with nichols on the field at the same time. Still the back up qb, but it allows us to get him in more and take nichols out less. Lots of positives and negatives to that. -
oil town. Small area, mainly oil workers and support. South side of the prairies can be just awful in summer and in winter. But once youve worked welding in a sea can, operating a burn oven or in most shops every thing out side is meh.

i love the restraining zone rather then fair catch. Fair catch and the single makes returning (one of the most exciting plays in football) more frequent and better quality.
-
second one is just an on side kick on a kick off return. iirc this was the play calgary under matt dunigan used in the last seconds of a game but the refs blew the call. But on the stamps tape of the game the player was clearly on side. We dont see on side stuff done much, or enough imo. Id have one fast guy on side and run down punts every time you have a young imp returner. we see tons of balls hit the turf. The last one is basically a blocked kick. so the team that originally was kicking is now returning team but blocks it and thus gains possession in the end zone. I wonder if this is a bi product of greater coverage by ESPN of the cfl in the us.

Youll get every one right, but its pretty funny to watch an average american ogle our rule set.

i love nothing more then watching one of our hoggies get to the second level and hit some one soo hard their %$&# falls off. -
Didnt obby kahn retire here with a year left on his deal, then come out of retirement and sign with calgary the same year while we got nothing for his rights? Maybe thats not how it works now but I feel like we dont hold his rights. We should though, unless he repays the bonus.
-
We dont have a ton of flexibility right now. I think goosen is coming up for a new deal soon. Maybe hardrick too. Jeffcoat, jsk etc cant be far back either. Our young guys who are becoming proven vets will need money and to make that money we will have to make moves in the next 2 years. Another big, big factor will be streveler. IF he doesnt chase the nfl dream in the next two years he will at this rate require a large bump in salary to keep. No doubt we want to keep biggie long term, if we can. We are approaching the point in that period of time where great franchises roll over vets for younger guys who are as good or better.

Its really hard to beat a team two weeks back to back. Especially when you route them the first game. Its always hard to follow up a big offensive out pouring as you tend to drift back down to the median. I think BC comes out and scraps much harder earlier. If they roll over and die they are pretty much toast. Maybe the chuck a ton of deep balls, maybe they pound the rock. But I dont think they will roll over and take a licking like last week.

at this point its improved over last year. and the biggest improvements to be made are more chemistry in the secondary and coaching. We are middle of the pack in a bunch of stats and among the best in a few big ones. But small ones, like most completions given up (worst) big plays given up (7th) yards given up (worst) and first down conversion splits are extreme outliers. (we have the best defense against teams trying to convert a first down with 4-6 yards, but 7-10 and 1-3 are middle to bottom tier) This points to our strategy. It is a bit early for deep delving into stats though (small sample size) Also the switch in starting qbs skews things on offense. It is a bit worry some that we have a very low YPC, but also low pass completion % compared to the rest of the league. With our offensive system we should be among the highest pass % teams if not the highest. But again qb switch and all. Whats even more interesting is that our eff soars as we pass deeper down field. Second best on 10-19 yard depth then head and shoulders better then every one else on 20+ yard passes. https://d3ham790trbkqy.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/2018-CFL-Statistics-to-Week-4.pdf

If you dont have a premier return man who is a threat to go all the way on every single return, the next best thing is a guy who gets under the ball, catches every single one he can and never goes backwards. Not saying that is cooper, but we dont need an impressive second returner. We need that steady smart lunch box return man imo.

the best game played by a bomber mlber since what henoc?
-
Imo harris out played wilder. Soo much more efficient. Iirc 10 or so less yards on 6 less touches. Harris was a shade under 100 yards at the half, we gave him a rest late in the game too.

And atleast one of goosen running down field and pancaking the crud out of some one too. hardrick and the young nucks have continued to really improve. Bryant is steady as ever. i dont know if any other bomber loves playing the game as much as hardrick does. This isnt about a jump to the nfl, or the next contract or any thing but fun. That man loves him some football. And you cant help but love him for it. -
nailed it.

That can certainly have such an affect. But you can easily see the difference in the pre nichols era and early nichols era in terms of time in the pocket. At the same time, weve seen BC un able to pass the rock against us for extended periods of time in the jenings era, but also seen them repeatedly rip massive runs with regularity on us. In the cfl even if a qb isnt hitting you arent going to cheat that heavily to the run game. Our OL also got banged up late last year when nichols was hurt as well.
