  1. have you watched him play? he cant independently rush the passer or play the run vs his own blocker. Not just lack of moves and know how, he cant beat average tackles with sheer athleticism over and over and over again. Corney came in with a great lack of technique, but the ability to occasionally beat his man with sheer quickness and strength. He also came with the ability to get in on the back end of plays with sheer athletic ability even after being beaten during the early play by his OL. Boatengs few successes comes from abject poor play, or having an opening created for him. And even those are few and far between. Corney is now showing the ability to beat tackles regularly with technique as well. Both are high motor guys. the difference athletically is like that of jamie stoddard and petermann. Corneys ability to bull rush tackles alone is enough to keep him in the league. Boateng isnt effective at all in a bull rush and to harness speed rushes requires technique, or a lot of tactics in designed plays. They went to boateng because they had no option in edm. They stuck with him 1 because of his passport, 2 because of his motor and 3 hes the right kind of football player. He is the end version of early jake thomas. Look back at some high lights here. Play one, wilder literally shoves him past the blocking tackle. Play two the bc Offense is doing two different things. Either it was supposed to be a read option, the play side tackle skips to the second level leaving him un blocked. Boateng goes inside, the ball should be pulled and taken around the end. But the qb rb positioning is more of a collision. And he goes eh you take the hit. Its possible the play was not a read option and the tackle had the play wrong. The next play, the rb lumabala 46 is left to block boateng alone, but he stays soo far inside behind the tackle he barely puts a hand on boateng as he goes past. When teams strategize to slide the line away from you and chip you with a FB its a bad sign. The next play is a Ol switch where the second ol doesnt pick him up. The play after is all hustle. The ol beats him keeps him out side gets behind the play. At this point the qb needs to feel the pressure and take action, but credit to his hustle. The running plays, he is disciplined in waiting and making a read on the run. But if that hole is filled by the Lber its a 5-6 yard gain. Slow reacting once his read is made and only gets an arm on the back. Next play same thing. Slow to fill the hole, tackling with an arm from the side instead of no gain its a 5-6 yard gain. Good discipline, good read, slow reaction puts him in a bad position left with an arm tackle. 3rd running play, gets out side the tackle, beats him clean loops back in side still coming from the side. Rather then going for a good from tackle like a hawk tackle, or a profile tackle he goes high and clotheslines the rb. I believe he was penalized on that play, if not its a bad miss. But if you try n tackle one of the bigger backs in the league, or even a good power smaller back like that they will bounce off you and romp down field. The next play is the best of so far. He plays the position well. Waits, but is slow getting out of his squat stop he gets his hands up which is smart and gets the tip which is picked. Against a low mobility passer this works. If its any of the mid tier or above qbs though they pump him or jab step and walk around him. (its our ole friend drew shell shock willy who doesnt even see boateng right in front of him. poor willy) Luck is the residue of hard work. Boateng works hard. Plenty of young guys end up in positions to make plays based on poor execution by the other team and dont. Im a firm believer the difference is preparation and hard work. Hes quick. But not especially quick for his size. He isnt over powering with strength by any means. The type of guy you love to have on your team but do not want starting. And yeah, would not have been top 10 dl for us in tc. No other team in the league would have him starting. Not every thing (obviously) correlates from american football to canadian. Despite the yard off the line, pass rushing has more similarities then most. The difference between high level DL and average ones, is use of their hands. Using the hands to fight off the OL, driving forward while maintaining the gap between your body (the end) and the tackle then using a move in that gap to create an angle to make a play in the back field. When an OL constantly has his hand under the pads of a DL, using leverage maintaining his angle and pushing the DL out side the tackle is winning. If you watch him, you see boateng controlled a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5qn1X6tUuM
  2. 🤣 no. he isnt as good as corney was in year 1.
  3. And yet others excelled in their first year. streveler isnt flutie. or really similar even.
  4. Ob was saying against bc the bombers intended to carry a 7th ol. I can see it if we carry an NI. It could be a contingency plan in case we arent able to beat edm pressure straight up to buy streveler time.
  5. His chop stepping, and bouncing is a result of a moving / shrinking pocket. Because he played out of a full shot gun, you dont take normal steps back as you do under center or in the pistol. It keeps his base together, under him and predictable. His foot speed and release is at a blinding level where he doesnt need to hold in one spot long before he goes from 0 to throw. He just needs to aim his shoulders/hips and fling it. Its a good response to pressure, read changing and pocket movement. It does telegraph when he is running to run and running to throw though. But qbs have such an advantage in running and he has such speed that he can still hit the holes even if the D knows he will run. Its an example of good athletic footwork out of a shotgun formation in a situation where you are facing regular pressure. Some of the times he starts out with good protection but seems to be waiting on wrs to get open.
  6. they are probably getting puffed up because rider fans click en mass. Give them some thing they like and the clicks soar. Least thats what I hope it is. I really hope the people who cover football coast to coast arent that dead between the ears.
  7. little tall isnt he
  8. Pre mos et al i would agree. We tried a lot of vaunted college spread offense guys who relied on timing, ball placement and defensive miss matches to succeed. In the walters mos era I think our style has been athletic guys with strong arms. More physical attributes then experience.
  9. ehh id take weight and frame over height. Height is great for playing passing lanes. Reach is great in general. wing span and low center of gravity is better then height specifically. You dont see a ton of shade over 6 foot rush ends though. I think youre right actually. Loffler pre ncaa injury and coming up to the cis, would have had good nfl interest though.
  10. Nichols is also slated to be out for less games then collaros has missed on average the past 4 seasons. impossible to catch the top 2? no. Unlikely, perhaps. But its also bolstered by the fact edm has 3 starting dbs out to start the season and no longer has franklin waiting to back up, and calgary looks more and more human. The sask situation with collaros, the old and the ni depth, and bc is in even deeper trouble with its ol and qb.
  11. As Chris Jones demonstrated, accurate information about quarterback can be hard to come by... I don’t want to take a usual suspect, so… Zach Collaros, QB, Saskatchewan. I don’t like their offensive line, Canadian depth.... How can soo many people NOT see the utter disaster in waiting that is the sask offense? Bad ol, Qb coming off a bad season + a half a season before that where he couldnt get it done till garbage time, and a guy who averaged just 11 games a year for the last 4 years! Im not big on qbs "record" but any starter and top paid guy on his team that hasnt won in 12 starts is an issue. The riders cut bond, maybe the best guard in the league. They cut 2 starting wrs one canadian coming off his best season. They are already in cap trouble and have no NI depth. The "vaunted" D, has sam hurl starting! The best move we made in the past couple years is dumping him. They are starting a rookie corner who hasnt played a regular season game at any level as a db, or on defense. They have a real good DL. I really liked judge coming out. They have a couple good dbs and a couple talented wrs. Thats like half a team at best. And missing the most important parts.
  12. drove in in a 74 dodge monaco 4 door.
  13. 250 is pretty average size for a cfl DE. Weve seen much smaller guys, gavin walls and joe montford play masterfully on the end. He was much much smaller then 250 at the combine. He was 233, could he have put on 17 lbs of lean mass from then to now, possibly. Could he have from the combine to last year in edm? not lean mass no. He isnt a track athlete, but he doesnt play terribly fast either. Hes under sized and out matched athletically. He isnt polished by college DE standards, he is a young guy with a motor and the right passport. If trent corney didnt have NI status, his athletic ability would easily have him in the cfl. Bc wanted to sign loffler as an IMP before he qualified for NI status. Simonise was highly thought of by the bengals. Petermanns athletic ability would also have him in a camp up here even with out his pass port. If boateng didnt have NI status he never would have gotten as far as a mini camp invite as TCF, and still wouldnt. Maybe he turns him self into a good pro end. It could happen, other guys have seized opportunity of the pass port and done it before. Wade miller, matt sheridan, and jamie stoddard for example. But as of his play ending last year, that hasnt been him.
  14. Weve passed on tons of good football players in the draft, those who fell and other wise. Where he was picked, or who by has no impact on the fact he just isnt that good of a DE. He was well below average last year.
  15. Flanders mostly played a wing/flank spot. Came in for an imp wr. But he motioned and lined up inside of normal slot positions. We put normand in as an Hback going between TE and FB mostly on blocking and some block n release stuff. Tbh we didnt use either package a lot for offensive out put. Flanders was as much used as a threat as an actual weapon. Change of pace stuff. In a goal line/short yardage situation, where you would use a true FB/hback couture would already be on the field. As well as thomas. So last year we'd have two tight, and normand and harris.
  16. We will probably just use WRs to chip in the few packages that include a FB and not a 2nd hb. In goal line type stuff we could fill in one of the Lbers etc. No one we have really fills the shoes of a FB but we could get creative with say corney. Its a low usage spot imo. And one we made more use of because normand is a real good football player.
  17. Double shift with fogg starting is an option, but he looked bad in limited reps at sam imo. I hope mo gets better and back to his old self soon. If we add him and keep the other 4 its the best situation.
  18. If we are gonna mess with the ratio, we would be far better off rotating corney/thomas as a starter and going with an extra imp on the oL, foketi for neuf. I dont think we will see 8 starting NI or corney / thomas unless we see injuries else where though.
  19. For some reason people seem to think he has suddenly become a borderline all star. Idk I wouldnt trade corney for him and a 1st round pick. He wouldnt have been top 10 on the DL for us in camp. I get starting less then spectacular NI dts, a role guy eating up OL in the middle can do a ton for your edge rush. But sacrificing good end play is a horrible move imo. Id love to see petermann given some shots at it. I dont think augustine is well cut out to return. But I also dont love the idea of sending out demski. Id send simonise or ptermann.
  20. But also because bennett can run the same option package stuff as streveler. I really do not like our depth at DB. No extra cb/hb fogg doing double return duties and full time db with no one to rotate. since fogg is listed in both return spots i assume its lankford. Wilson played pretty well in pre season i hope we carry him. 5 back ups for mlb/wlb and none for cb, hb, or sam. God fordbid a db gets hurt. Jones would be the man to rotate and take an injured spot, and he is a good football player but he is far more a S then a cover guy.
  21. I expect to see all kinds of mixed looks with wings and motion flank to slot etc. I hope to see atleast some shovel / out side zone read option.
  22. I like the pick on petermann. I feel like he will play the best of the big three, but that he will see the field the least due to being behind demski. his height isnt impressive for getting on rides at disney land, no doubt. But when a guy that undersized makes the cut you gotta know he makes up for it on the field.
  23. Very much agree. A lot of times modern teams plan for wrs to run off the dbs rather then block. Weve seen some really good blocking from wrs in the past, kamau, milt, stoddard etc. Petermann seems like hed run through a brick wall if the first down marker was on the other side. Its too bad he isnt starting, I do think he is the better player right now between the 3 young guns. And yeah I expect to see some great blocks from the wrs this year. Just hope fully not from dressler or adams too much.
  24. Hold a clip board, so long as that doesnt get in the way of you getting the real players coffee... type of job.
