Chris Jones Signs Vince Young: Brilliant or Desperate?
wbbfan replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Qbs are not very interchangeable cfl - nfl and back. Ricky ray couldnt cut it down south. danny mac, hank etc etc. And the offensive style gap only widens. Older qbs with experience do seem to improve decision making and throw selection. Damon allen, and AC come quickly to mind. Time off / out of position can help as well as in kerry joseph. That said his deficiencies arent likely to have improved, and his passing skill set doesnt project favorably. Is he a worth while sign? sure. worth a lot of money? no. High risk pick up, not sure if hes still high reward or not. He could be low risk high reward if used sparingly in a wild cat esq package + goal line formation but i dont see that happening. -

Yeah dont think they are bringing 12 into camp like the als. Running 5 with one guy only getting coffee is tough. More then 5 is nuts. Just not enough reps to evaluate, get people in the groove etc. An extra guy just to throw passes in mini camp doesnt hurt, though thats done semi regularly by coaches, visiting coaches, etc 2 kinds of football teams. Ones that are comfortable with their qb situation, and teams frantically trying to get a comfortable set up. Didnt we have one like that last year with people raging that we didnt get harris/collaros, etc? -
yeah is a great read. Ed tait is the best pick up the bombers have made in years haha. He was still great in the paper before, but having him dedicated to the blue is fantastic.

That probably is the idea behind it. Though with those ends i would over hype every one. Casual cfl/hammy fan sees that and sees the cats drafting the next fantuz at 4 they go oh man i better follow this! Same fan sees bauman and goes .... The level of quality in cfl media under the elite tier is pretty low. The drop off from good guys around the league is massive. Thats really what results in an article like this imop. Not sure if he wants to do a hype piece or a serious piece, doesnt know how to get the desired effect either way.

more likely similar skill set / size coming out. Its safe comparisons as opposed to comparing guys to milt, blink etc. Like people who compared deshawn stevenson going into the nba to michael jordan. A range is usually better like at worst a jon oosterhuise but has the up side to be a doug brown etc. comparisons suck.
-
yeah for sure. Reminds me of josh ranek the way he runs. Could watch him all day long. Love a big bruising NI back who flashes hands, versatile, can block, and plays teams. Every team in the league can use a guy like this.
-
Didnt things get all blustery at one point when some one compared vandervoort to bauman? Not a fan of comparisons, an interesting read all the same. There is a world of difference between coming up playing TE, and going from a stocky wr to nik lewis a good ways into a pro career. Size / weight distribution, TE skill set, NI etc.
-
irvin looks like a guy to come in and push the young guys, offer depth.
-
the site crashes arent helping yeah the combine is gonna earn and lose a lot of invites and that will change up the best available a ton. we could end up with one of a fist full of different guys with the no1 pick. If only we had a full combine roster.
-
hes certainly an interesting prospect. Man that would be sick i cant see them giving that much though. if there was a guy like henoc at the top that was gonna be on the team this year maybe. Id actually rather trade down to say 3 for a depth pick this year 2-4th and a first next year. We are allready deep picking this year.
-
nik lewis wasnt 280 pounds when he first came to the cfl and found success. Hes gotten bigger and bigger each year.
-
It may just be me but i feel like each year there is an antony auclair type prospect. A guy whose really a TE and doesnt fit with the pistol spread every team seems to run in the cfl. But as the talent and athletic ability improves with each passing year of the draft I wonder if/when some one is going to make a system change. A lot of teams in the pistol have wrs pitch in and block an end on some plays, screen passes seem more common then the previous 5 or 6 years etc. For a team like us, the last few years our NI wr production has been soo low I cant imagine having a guy like auclair who could help seal a dominant rusher on one end, pick up blitz etc would have been less valuable. Not to mention weve seen what guys like messam can do match up wise on lbers, and dbs in this league. But i have a fetish for odd ball systems. packages, and positions. Auclair probably gets a long hard look at the nfl. Out of this draft class Hes probably the highest risk pick. Between his fit in the cfl and nfl interest. It will be interesting to watch though.

Chris Jones Signs Vince Young: Brilliant or Desperate?
wbbfan replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Thats the truth. No joke. Spurgeon lose and purolator pat barnes etc. The cfl just takes a different mentality, mind set, and speed of play then the NFL. Its a rare thing that a qb goes one way or the other with success having had success in the other. Even the great old examples of flutie and garcia etc, those were a long time ago when teams still ran traditional american form offenses. Before the default being single back pistol offense. -

yeah i mean i cant cry too much for them (aside from being in the west) they have an elite level qb at the right age. He isnt gonna jump to the nfl at 32+, hes not soo old hes year to year, etc. In shape his mobility is maybe the highest in the cfl among qbs. The trend today is more towards guys who can extend the play and run if they really need to, not to guys who are real double threats. He is a double threat level athlete no question. If he is / can get into shape. His arm was solid, but inconsistent. And his passing mechanics / release point are junk. And release is slow as a result. With the wide field, and his mechanics if he has to throw on the run he will need to move the ball down field. If he scrambles and tries to throw wide side outs its gonna be pick 6 city. That is the hardest pass to make in the cfl, especially if you have to throw across your body. He struggled to adapt to coverage and scheme from college to the nfl. He flashed and sizzled in a game he played since he was a child. I cant imagine that is going to improve in a drastically different version of football. Cant say, locker room dynamics are often speculated on but can often be very wrong. Only his team mates and coaches know. Short of a run first qb (early michael vick) you allways need strong protection. If the pocket crumbles up the middle its very very tough to make any kind of play. With his mechanics he will need the ol to limit pressure to being off one edge at most. He doesnt get rid of the ball quick, and you dont want him throwing on the roll out a lot, but atleast he can pick up yards on the ground in that situation. If he isnt, they can push him into shape and teach him the game. Its not as bad on qbs physically in camp as other none kicker positions. Teaching him the difference and getting him to mentally adapt early will be a much bigger hurdle then getting his cardio up to snuff. Think it was like 5 years? Only one off the top of my head to do some thing like that was kerry joseph who was i think retired and played saftey and teams prior to the Renegades bringing him up as a qb. -
Thats scouting life. Not even as bad as regional scouts who watch every game on video go to as many as humanly possible then rewatch video to send those names up. Football and football ops are not family friendly. A few years back read about the scouting regiment of nfl teams from 09-12 where qbs went top, and some teams went back and watch every snap of football those qbs took from before HS up to their final college game multiple times. Teams with picks a few under no1 just in case the qbs fell and they had to make a decision on them to pick or trade.

You can find a mobile back up to fill that role though. If that happened and reilly lived up to the hype that would be the best case scenario. But if he doesnt thats pretty much worst case ontario for them. If he performs too well he either bolts to the nfl or gets crazy money and the starting job on a team in next years FA. In general im not on the wagon with upstart QBs as starters/elite tier until they maintain it. Far too many flash in the pan guys who cant stay healthy or cant maintain the level of performance. -

probably very close to the shape of a football right now. On that jamarcus russell diet. I imagine a lot, like a lot a lot. I cant see him and glenn being even close to as low as just what durant made. -

ac, burris and damon allen got hit tons and tons being mobile qbs for many years before settling down. Ray was as pocket as pocket can be and got hit while throwing a lot too. except those guys got hit a ton to his age range too.
