CFL - 2024 Regular Season - Discussion Thread

We seem content to stand pat for the most part, even though we badly need de/dl and lber among other positions. -

3 teams are with in one 40 point swing, which can easily happen in 1 game on off. On D the als are with in 2 scores, and bc has an extra Game played now. That means if Mtl has one major less game, and we have a high scoring back and forth game it change pretty heavily. The league also had a big scoring lull that seems to finally be breaking, plus the end of the season will likely see some teams eliminated with blow outs ensuing. Not to mention some teams could shut it down for rest. I don’t think we have any decent chance of winning the west and staying in the basement of scoring. And just like how defences break in the 4th quarter with out support through the Game the same happens in the final 1/3 of the season. -

Guarantee it won’t stay that way between now and when the west is clinched. Either our O will come up, or our D will come down. Hopefully we start scoring tds. -
3 stars plus hh bjb sweep first place defended

I’d argue Red Sox fans got like that. Yankees fans have always been like riders fans, but for one of the most successful teams in na sports history. Cowboys fans too. “Americas team” the rider fans plagiarized soo much of ctheir modern culture. Philadelphia sports fans in general too. Rider fan culture is on the goat list for toxicity. We’ve had our fair share of dumbass toxic online fans since 19, but a tiny fraction of the invasive bs. It sucks for the actual good fans they have. -

It’s an alchemical mix of both that doesn’t apply universally to other QBs. The nuance required has killed teams desire to try and try it other than with top picks. The time and investment is also a front office killer if you miss. QBs are really self developing after the first 10-15 picks these days. we all fish from the same pool. They get first dibs, but that doesn’t change the fact that less kids are playing football and even less pushing for higher levels. Ol is also a problem for them. -

Qft. yep. Then it’ll get knocked down and the cycle will repeat. I rotate some services. Extra channels on prime when on sale, crave, etc. I used to rotate tsn and sports net but probably won’t again. I actually have cable that isn’t hooked up with a new box. They bundled it with my internet cell and home phone. (Wife insisted) I’m going to change shortly, dropped cell, gonna drop cable and home phone, unless I get a really good cable bundle with sports. Honestly I’m tired of figuring out how I’m gonna watch all kinds of sporting events, or finding mediocre streams. -

For my money that one is more star studded and idk if they could play this scheme. This unit is a much deeper more group oriented D. If we keep these young guys around it’s gonna be insane. Agree -

On the topic of Philpot and League wide injuries, booch suggested in another thread that it might be the reduction in full contact practices. I took a Quick Look at a few teams 6 game lists and it is crazy how many high impact starters and star players are badly hurt. This easily seems like the worst season for injuries since the return to play after the missed season. (A good chunk of that was Edmonton and sask coaching being dumb though) they looked at kick off injuries and ways to reduce them this last off season. And it still hasn’t seemed like the problem they thought it was (mainly based on the nfl move) but some thing is causing issues this year. I for one think boochs point about practice is on point. It may not be the entire cause of the rash of injuries but I do think it’s the biggest single factor. The league might need to adjust the practice rules. Which imo would also make the games better quality and help develop young guys too. -

I would think it’s this. Other wise we wouldn’t have gotten it on tsn plus thingy. 100% would’ve been better. I also was expecting ctv to have it airing on their platform with in all the apps they operate. Which would mean you could watch the games on prime, roku channels etc. which would be huge. -

It was reported as being real strong and certainly seemed to reduce after the half. I’m not sure it was a crazy wind didn’t seem to be effecting passes a lot, so likely dropped off for game time some too. Pas is an odd one for wind, the upper deck really catches all the wind possible, and the field level has decent protection at field level but it can get stronger at deep toss/kick height. -

Bonds is excellent but Nichols is better, bonds benefits from playing next to nichol. The half almost never benefits from the corner. And it’s doubly true in our system. The half is the one making tough switches. The corner just maintains leverage over his area while sandwiching with the side line. It’s also worth noting that bonds hands are shakey even for a db. If he’d caught all the balls that hit him in the hands he’d lead the league in picks. Ford and Nichols are out making catches like wrs. -

Griffin and Nichols have been excellent too. Ford makes the picks and is damn good, but Nichols is shut down and the best tackler on our D. Easily the best at filling a gap and making stops on backs from our lbers and dbs. -

Nope. It had to be linked to a paid cable sub. It was just the first game. Some problems will happen. Camera work was good. Getting more wide angle was nice. -

Seems like a major injury problem league wide this year among skill positions especially on offence. Really sucks. -

The same kenny lawler that was our pass game in 21? The same one who nearly put up 1k in edm in 12 games then again in 12 games here? Laughable. If lawler isnt a workhorse, then there isn't one in the entire league right now.

I expect adams and maybe hubert will draw back in and an imp db will go off. Even with jake taking too many reps, if Garbutt, adams and woods are on for most of the run plays edm won't have a ton of success. I also expect we will have nichols cover the out side run fit on his edge again. Too bad we don't still have a bigger Lber who can come on to help gap cancel. Any of Gemmel, Petrishen, Moses, and Thomas would look darn good against Edmonton. -
I mean 21-22 was nearly identical, last year he missed 1/3 and instead of being wr1 with out much support we had demski going for 1k, schoen, lawler still getting 900, drew and bailey combining for another 1k, plus brady getting 2k from the line with 500 receiving.

We saw it last week a handful of times, its always been one of our looks. It's just we used to use it for the slow developing screens more, but its been a thing we do for a while. Even longer ago when zach was MOP zach, and we would run the hurry up with the heavy set we would throw out of that base a lot more. It was the safety net back with harris and nichols, and back to plops time with blink/khari. -

Yeah, I really didn't want to see buck on the field when he still had a career lol. I'll say this too, with how thin we are at back up qb now, I bet we see a ton more of that 3 target pass concept. Its pretty similar to what june jones was running in hamilton back in the day. Keep zach up right, give him as much of a pocket as we can, have him throw tight windows. If they take away the windows? check down to brady. -
I havent seen any degradation in Kenny. Our passing offence sucks for multiple reasons right now. Bucks game plan, zachs limitations, mainly terrible pass pro. But also we have had a lack of depth at WR. Teams double kenny and wait for us to beat them with the filler. Im sure he isn't 100%, but if we started using him like we used to, and tossing him stuff that gave him a chance to make plays It'd happen all over again.
