Around The League Off Season Discussion
JCon replied to Bomber_fanaddict's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
No different than anywhere else in sports (among the diehards). Lots of people loved Joe Mack, until they hated him, me included. 8 wins? That's going to be difficult. I wonder what will happen if the season starts poorly but he turns it around in the second half? If Jones gets to 6 or 7 wins but most of those come in September (after the Banjo Bowl) and October, I wonder if that's enough? Everything will revolve around how well the QB plays (versus how well Durant plays). -
I would say IT professionals are well, well, paid in the public sector. There were crazy bumps getting geared up for Y2K (remember that?) and they've kept up the pace. I know that they don't have any challenges attracting qualified staff for the wages and benefits they pay. Also, fixed workweek, is a bonus.
-
Interesting. Comparatively, in my line of business, the private sector pays at least 20% more. Makes it near impossible to attract staff, never mind quality staff. Non-professionals are over-compensated, I agree.
-
I'm very confused. I've now seen Dunk's article that says two years.
-
Exactly. Everyone thought is was a two-year deal but it was actually a three (as I remember it). It was a surprise re-signing (extension) because it came a year early and Walters was being praised.
-
Can't count. That's how you end up with a house full undocumented players in Regina.
-
I agree. And that's not based on anything he has said since he signed his deal, just instinct. I do hope he stays, though.
-
I think it's a bad decision to put Murray in. Fluery has played so well and the players love him and want to win for him. I think this kills them and the Sens win the series.
-
True, but Trouba is going to get paid wherever he goes. However, the little bit of leverage he has can ensure he gets little bit more. Either through sponsorship opportunities, app development (), or taxes. Maybe even all 3. Plus, maybe he wants to be closer to home, family or his girlfriend. Who knows?!
-
You can get insurance policies (the player themselves) that pay out a lot more in case of career ending injuries. The team takes out insurance on the contracts, reimbursing them for having to pay you out.
-
Yeah, but how often does that happen? And, you have insurance to cover you in case of a catastrophic injury. I say, for Trouba, he's better to wait and sign next offseason. And, maybe he truly wants out and then the Jets will need to move him. Speculating of course but I don't see him getting any less per year, if he waits and maybe, he gets more.
-
It's impossible (nearly) to cover. He's running away from the defender and, as long as the QB puts it in the right place, the defender can't get close enough without risking PI. It's also unique to the CFL because of the size of the endzone. The NFL sees a lot more on the line, reaching out of bounds, type passes. EDIT: Also, the defender can't cheat because Denmark can just turn and the defender would be stuck way out there, leaving Denmark for an wide open catch. Denmark is great at running routes.
-
I think Trouba is serious when he says he's under contract and not looking for an extension. My guess is that he doesn't not sign an extension, hoping to improve his numbers again, boosting his contract value even more. Of course, if he's willing to listen, maybe Jacob gets paid this summer.
-
Jets were not allowed to make an offer. That was confirmed by both sides.
-
Chevy gets a number from Chipman each year. Chevy doesn't pick the number, he just works within it. Considering he thought he would be paying Trouba a lot more, so probably budgeted that way. Ron Hainsey played over 900 NHL games before playing in a single playoff game. He got paid and has never won.
-
If players got paid to win, all the contracts would would reflect that. They don't. Players get paid whether they win or lose. If Chevy didn't have the budget to pay a goaltender, then who's fault is it?
-
No, pro players do not get paid to win. If they did, everyone would be paid in the playoffs and have huge incentive based contracts. They're paid to be at the rink. The teams are banking on them have the drive and talent to get better and make the team better. What was Chevy's budget last year? Maybe he wanted to get a better back-up goalie but couldn't afford him. How would Chevy know how much Trouba was going to cost. I bet he figured he would be paying him twice as much starting a long term deal. The expectation of the club, as was stated before the season even started, was for the group to develop. The unspoken idea was that the Jets were not going to make the playoffs. Mission accomplished, unfortunately. Chevy couldn't trade in the offseason for a quality (ie expensive) back-up or sign one and risk losing them this spring. He managed his budget, expecting to pay Trouba more and hoping Helle would play 60 games, with Hutch the rest and everything would work out. You don't think Chipman went into this season knowing the risk in net? You don't think Chipman went in knowing that this was a development year? Chevy's done exactly what they've asked, with the budget they've provided. Why would they fire him? He may have even exceeded their expectations.
-
Silver will not like this. It makes the NBA look bad. Yes, most teams do this but you don't admit it.
-
Non of drivel makes sense. What do you expect Chipman to do? Call out his GM in the media? Fire him over the mistake? GMs make mistakes all the time. Only one GM will win the Stanley Cup this year, so every other GM should get fired? I mean, what did Bowman do this year? Blackhawks got swept in the first round. Needs to be fired, really. And, how would you know how Chipman holds Chevy accountable? Imagine a world where the owner doesn't tell Joe Public how he handles internal matters. Also, Helle is being paid to play hockey for the Jets. One team wins and one team loses each night. It's not his fault the team assessed him as being further developed than he was.
-
I think we should take the best prospect on the board. At 13, we're not likely to get someone who can walk into the line-up, so take the player with the best possible upside. We need a LH defenseman today but will we need one tomorrow? That, I'm not certain.

The last president has his loyalty questioned too. Someone even had the gall to hound him for his birth certificate to prove he was born in the US.

More like Spicer. The mouthpiece of the administration (without a hot-clue what's really going on).
