We're losing 3 billion dollars in taxes (at least-some estimates are 20 billion) every year to tax shelters. That alone would fund universal day care which in turn saves tons of money down the road (healthier kids means happier and better educated kids, women better able to return to the workforce and pay taxes etc. Still waiting for a Federal government to go after the rich tax cheats. https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/cra-tax-gap-foreign-holdings-1.4726983 "Well-heeled Canadians have hidden up to $240.5 billion in foreign accounts and are dodging up to $3 billion a year in federal tax on those funds, according to the CRA's first ever attempt to estimate how much government revenue is lost from individuals stashing money abroad. The Canada Revenue Agency arrived at the figure as part of its effort to calculate the country's "tax gap" — the difference between how much the government would collect if everyone paid what they owe, and how much the government actually takes in."

I'm not sure if a group of anonymous posters should really discuss courage and cowardice.

NRA Was 'Foreign Asset' To Russia Ahead of 2016, New Senate Report Reveals September 27, 201910:01 AM ET "The National Rifle Association acted as a "foreign asset" for Russia in the period leading up to the 2016 election, according to a new investigation unveiled Friday by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore. Drawing on contemporaneous emails and private interviews, an 18-month probe by the Senate Finance Committee's Democratic staff found that the NRA underwrote political access for Russian nationals Maria Butina and Alexander Torshin more than previously known — even though the two had declared their ties to the Kremlin. The report, available here, also describes how closely the gun rights group was involved with organizing a 2015 visit by some of its leaders to Moscow. Then-NRA vice president Pete Brownell, who would later become NRA president, was enticed to visit Russia with the promise of personal business opportunities — and the NRA covered a portion of the trip's costs. The conclusions of the Senate investigation could have legal implications for the NRA, Wyden says. Tax-exempt organizations are barred from using funds for the personal benefit of its officials or for actions significantly outside their stated missions. The revelations in the Senate report raise questions about whether the NRA could face civil penalties or lose its tax-exempt status." https://www.npr.org/2019/09/27/764879242/nra-was-foreign-asset-to-russia-ahead-of-2016-new-senate-report-reveals?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_term=nprnews

And NewsWeek in March. If anyone doesn't by now realize that Sean Hannity is total slime by now, there is little hope for you. HOW DONALD TRUMP AND SEAN HANNITY ARE PROMOTING THEORY UKRAINE INTERFERED IN 2016 ELECTION TO HELP HILLARY CLINTON "As Ukraine prepares for its presidential elections on March 31, collusion with a foreign country and President Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort have made their way into the public discourse. And President Trump, his son Donald Trump Jr., and the president's favorite television presenter Sean Hannity are helping the conversation along, alleging that anti-corruption leaders in Ukraine tried to sway the U.S. election in favor of Hillary Clinton. It all started on March 5, when U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch criticized the country's record on corruption, pointing to a recent high court decision to decriminalize illicit enrichment—when a public official has significant increases to their wealth or assets that cannot be explained by their income. Ambassador Yovanovitch specifically noted that the high court's decision weakens Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau, a law enforcement body established after a pro-Western movement ousted pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014. From there, Ukraine's officials went on the offensive, appearing to target the bureau. Ukraine's Prosecutor General, Yuriy Lutsenko, announced on U.S.-based Hill Television earlier this month that he was opening a probe into alleged efforts by Ukrainians to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Those efforts, he said, involved the head of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, Artem Sytnyk. He also alleged that U.S. ambassador Yovanovitch had attempted to pressure him not to prosecute certain people, a claim the State Department denied in an email to Radio Free Europe." "Previous reports suggested that Ukraine's government may have stopped cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Manafort so that the Trump administration would sell the country lethal weapons with which to defend itself from pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. And a Ukranian court ruled in December last year that the National Anti-Corruption Bureau's transparency efforts were an attempt to influence U.S. elections. Olga Lautman, an investigator covering Russia and the former Soviet Union, told Newsweek that Lutsenko recently met with Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani in Washington, and that the efforts to create a narrative about people in Ukraine working to help Clinton and hurt Trump was coordinated with Republican leaders." https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-sean-hannity-theory-ukraine-colluded-hillary-clinton-1376867

Interestingly enough, NYMAG was writing about the Ukraine thing back in May. Trump Is Pressuring Ukraine to Smear Clinton and Biden THE NATIONAL INTEREST MAY 10, 2019 In 2016, Donald Trump’s campaign learned Russia was working to help him win, and many of its members actively sought to exploit that assistance. In 2020, now possessing the powers of the Executive branch, it’s pressuring a foreign government to assist Trump’s reelection campaign. The effort consists of Trump’s agents lobbying Ukraine to smear his political rivals. The smear campaign is being run by Rudy Giuliani, who — perhaps operating on the theory that a massive scandal boasted about in the media by its perpetrators is less damaging than one uncovered by investigators — is broadcasting his scheme. “There’s nothing illegal about it,” he tells the New York Times. “Somebody could say it’s improper.” Well, yes, they could. It’s grossly, terrifyingly improper. http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/05/trump-giuliani-ukraine-smear-biden-russia.html

House Speaker Pelosi to announce formal impeachment inquiry of Trump BREAKING: The announcement later Tuesday from Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) comes amid reports that President Trump may have pressured a foreign leader to investigate former vice president and potential 2020 campaign rival Joe Biden and his family. A growing number of House Democrats are backing an impeachment inquiry as momentum shifts in the Democratic caucus. Democratic officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak frankly, said she would back the step. This is a developing story and will be updated. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and top Democrats are privately discussing the creation of a select committee to conduct the possible impeachment of President Trump, according to multiple lawmakers and congressional aides, underscoring the momentum among Democrats to try to oust the president. The California Democrat has spoken to key allies in recent days about establishing a special panel rather than leaving the task with the House Judiciary Committee, said several Democratic officials. Nothing has been decided, the individuals cautioned, but some members are expected to publicly endorse the move soon. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely describe private deliberations. Pelosi’s office declined to comment on the matter. https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/pelosi-top-democrats-privately-discuss-creation-of-select-committee-for-impeachment/2019/09/24/af6f735a-dedf-11e9-b199-f638bf2c340f_story.html

You may think you're being honest with yourself, but that's about where it ends.

I take it as a compliment, even though I know that's not how it was meant. Also a proud tree hugger, SJW and virtue signaller.

Yes. And this: "The Midwest flooding has killed livestock, ruined harvests and has farmers worried for their future. Across parts of the Midwest, hundreds of livestock are drowned or stranded; valuable unsold, stored grain is ruined in submerged storage bins; and fields are like lakes, casting doubt on whether they can be planted this year." https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/21/us/floods-nebraska-iowa-agriculture-farm-loss/index.html

Nature couldn't give a flying fork about your economics and literally no one has said we need to immediately jump to renewables. Literally everyone has been talking about a transition to green energy - it's the speed of transition that's up for debate even though we are already in transition. Please try to be more honest about this.
-
Ridiculous. The same people who are advocating for renewable energy are not the one's advocating for war or ignoring refugee crises. They're the ones who have been fighting for humanity and the environment (they go hand in hand) for 50 years. It's the Republicans and hard line conservatives who consider the poor and the non-whites expendable. Your words are absolutely empty of any kind of truth. There won't be any need for combines of any kind if crops don't grow because of extended droughts or flooding due to climate change.
-
So let me get this straight. You claim that 25,000 years ago, we were 6 degrees warmer so everything will be fine even if we don't do a damn thing about climate change (neglecting human populations and their massive effects on drainage, water management, biodiversity etc.). But also. No one used petroleum products 125 years ago but it will be too inconvenient for us to change now.

I was speaking specifically to the California Emissions Laws ruling. Don't disagree with you on the overall.

It's an oversimplification to say that long distance rates went down simply because MTS was privatized. If that were true, Sasktel wouldn't have among the cheapest rates in Canada and corporate rates that are much cheaper than that of Manitoba. The sale was ideological and the beneficiaries were lined up at the trough waiting for the trigger to get pulled.

I'm pretty excited about the statistical special teams mismatch. Punt return avg Wpg-13.4 yards (2nd in league) Mtl-11.5 (4th) Kickoff return avg Wpg-23.4 (4th) Mtl-18.4 (last) Opponents' Punt return avg Wpg - 8.3 (1st) Mtl - 13.0 (7th) Opp Kickoff return avg Wpg - 21.5 (4th) Mtl - 25.2 (8th) Winnipeg is 2nd in net punting (36.9) while Mtl is 6th (35.5) They are tied for 1st in the league when it comes to Opponents Starting Field Position (30 yard line). Mtl is only making 90.9 of their 1-point converts while Medlock is still perfect.

The CBC is attacked by both sides for showing bias on a daily basis. It's probably because their reporting is pretty accurate.
-
It can certainly be both and they usually go hand in hand.

The seeming Democratic "inaction" on this may be because they know this measure will be defeated in court. The EPA set out minimum regulations for states to adhere to while explicitly stating that States could implement standards higher than the national guidelines. This was because California already had an "automobile plan" when the EPA was created in 1973. There was a good segment on NPR about this the other day. If there is any silver lining to Trump, almost all his attempts to destroy things are either tied up in courts or have already been defeated in court - despite his unprecedented stacking of the courts with unqualified Republican yes men.
-
And I'm worried about MTS being privatized.....oh wait. It's not like there isn't history to consider.

Incorrect, but the Conservative Party repeatedly fails to nominate a leader that I can't hate. Michael Chong would have been the proper choice for leader, but the Conservatives can't have nice things either.
