Freeland is the heir apparent. There are other good choices as well.
-
I've read that the O'Toole overthrow began over his supporting the Conversion Therapy Ban. It would not surprise me.
-
I know many conservatives having grown up in the rurals. There are 3 main platforms that make them CPC voters: less restrictive gun control against immigration of people of colour a misguided notion that conservatives are better at managing the budget because they make token cuts to taxes.
-
The CPC has to embrace climate change policy in a meaningful way to have any chance at governing federally and their base (and donors) won't let them do that. There is no leadership material in that stable right now that would appeal to both the base and swing voters.
-
You already have the Trump era in Alberta and the rest of Canada is watching. That's why a drift further right SHOULD prevent them from governing federally.

(Language warning) Joel Coen's "The Tragedy of Macbeth", Reviewed by Ethan Coen More like Macbleeeech! In The Tragedy of Macbeth, long-time Hollywood presence Joel Coen — who has 18 prior films to his credit — takes sole creative control of a project for the first time. The result, not unlike the tale of Macbeth itself, is a tragedy of epic proportions. In the interest of full disclosure, my editor has requested that I mention that I was Mr. Coen’s writing partner, producer, and creative collaborator on the aforementioned 18 films. I am also his brother. We parted ways prior to Macbeth in a split that the press described as completely amicable. Despite my prior association with Mr. Coen, I feel that I am entirely capable of reviewing his work in a fair and objective way. Macbeth is Joel Coen’s shittiest movie by several billion light years. If all the elephants in all the world crapped into the same canyon for 100 years, you would still not have a pile of **** half a large as Joel Coen’s dumb-as-a-dog-**** rendering of this classic tale. One can’t watch Macbeth without getting the sense that something is missing; some inspired element that gave Mr. Coen’s earlier work an aura of ebullient genius is absent this time. The wit, verve, and undeniable rugged machismo that characterized the other 18 films in which he happened to be involved are nowhere to be found here. Ultimately, one must conclude that what’s lacking is talent itself. Consider the very decision to adapt Macbeth. The choice belies deep insecurity; Mr. Coen seems, on some level, to understand that he has the talent God gave a balloon full of piss, and therefore needs to latch onto more talented artists like a lamprey sucking the life out of a majestic blue whale. A less insecure director might have been satisfied with a less esteemed piece of intellectual property, but Mr. Coen glommed onto perhaps the best known play by the world’s most renowned playwright in a move that screams “HELP! THE NO TALENT POLICE ARE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! PLEASE, SOMEONE RESCUE ME BEFORE I’M EXPOSED AS A FRAUD WHO SOMEHOW FELL ASS-FIRST INTO A MOVIE CAREER!” If the decision to take on Macbeth suggests that Mr. Coen is a sad wannabe flailing for credibility, the choice to film in black-and-white proves the case beyond any reasonable doubt. In a move that would get you kicked out Film 101 at the DeVry Institute of Mediocrity, Mr. Coen renders the Bard’s tale in black-and-white using a 4:3 aspect ratio, as if that alone makes you Akira ******* Kurosawa. Though black-and-white can occasionally be an inspired choice — 2001’s The Man Who Wasn’t There comes to mind — the only way in which this gambit might have been anything other than a desperately pretentious ploy is that it’s possible that Mr. Coen was simply too dumb to know that color film exists. Or, perhaps he thought “Hmm — Shakespeare’s old, black-and-white is old…I’ll film in black-and-white, just like they did back in Shakespeare times!” ......(cont'd) https://imightbewrong.substack.com/p/joel-coens-the-tragedy-of-macbeth?r=bztg5&fbclid=IwAR1sNOtoJg9PglIdfLqKgWvxHZiLrY74G1kgRXqkVH1VZsuRF2FcULDoBZ4

Speaking of guys we've forgotten about, I wonder how well Mercy Maston's recovery went and what the appetite is to bring him back. He was so good in the first Cup run. -
Interesting that the McDonald Grain Company Ltd. has no digital presence - at least I can't find anything.
-
I have not. And now I'm afraid to look.

I had no idea she was this wealthy.

Stefanson admits breaking conflict-of-interest rules Premier failed to disclose property sales worth more than $31M By: Carol Sanders | Posted: 7:00 PM CST Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022 Premier Heather Stefanson has admitted she failed to follow the province’s conflict-of-interest rules after the sale of properties worth millions of dollars. The real estate deals that tripped up the premier involve rental and commercial properties that are the subject of a letter the NDP sent to the province’s conflict-of-interest commissioner; however, Stefanson is unlikely to face any consequences under legislation that critics have long complained has no teeth. In 2019, the McDonald Grain Company Ltd. — Stefanson is listed as a director — sold The Ritz apartment block (859 Grosvenor Ave.) for $7 million and Drury Manor (1833 Pembina Hwy.) for $22.5 million without filing a statement disclosing the disposal of assets. In 2016, she failed to disclose the disposal of a storage facility on Saulteaux Crescent the McDonald Grain holding company sold for $1.78 million. Stefanson owns 20 per cent of the shares in the real estate holding company. Stefanson admits breaking conflict-of-interest rules - Winnipeg Free Press

There's a lot of drug-addled rockers who don't go off on racist tirades. Don't let him off so easy.

This is a fundraiser for the Maverick Party (formerly Wexit). Probably also a way to launder American funds into Canadian politics. The murky matter of protests and the donations that drive them by James MenziesJanuary 21, 2022@JamesMenzies Much has been made of late on social media and in the mainstream media, about trucker protests that are in the works. Truckers are rightfully upset about a vaccine mandate that was clumsily applied to cross-border essential workers, including the professional drivers who’ve been keeping us supplied throughout the pandemic. But such protests rarely deliver results, aside from angering the motoring public and casting shade on our industry. We will report on significant events that disrupt our industry and your businesses, but do nothing to support this form of protest. One disturbing trend is the amount of money being thrown at recent attempts to bring commerce to a halt. One initiative raised more than $900,000 via GoFundMe in less than a week. This is fairly significant, and startling, when you consider where that money is going. The fundraising initiative was started by Tamara Lich, who has a history of association with radical groups, including the recently formed federal separatist Maverick Party in Alberta. Yes, by this weekend, there is likely to be about $1 million in the hands of someone affiliated with a party that wants to break up Canada. (Plan B, mind you). In her past, Lich was regional coordinator for Wexit in Southeastern Alberta, and was member of the board for Wexit Alberta. What’s Wexit Alberta? It was the provincial party whose co-founder wanted to exit Canada and join the Trump-led U.S. Lich later took her ambitions federally and joined the federal Wexit Canada board, which would later become the Maverick Party. She was also affiliated with the Yellow Vest movement, which was linked to death threats against our Prime Minister. Is that what we’ve become, Canada? To her credit, Lich attempted to distance her local chapter from those making the death threats. But think about that for a second…she was affiliated with an organization that threatened to kill our Prime Minister – and now has nearly $1 million of your money to distribute as she sees fit. https://www.trucknews.com/blogs/the-murky-matter-of-protests-and-the-donations-that-drive-them/

Was hooked on Nick Park's work since I first saw this in 89/90 at WAG's Animation Celebration.

I can't take credit for this, but anyone thinking about voting for a right wing (and let's face it, they're all going this way) party, should first sing this little ditty while looking at that option: Super-callous, fascist-leaning, sexist, grifting, a**holes

2022 Off Season - Back 2 Back Champs Edition

Fact: None of that matters now -no matter which side of this argument you are on. -
I realize this has been out since August, but I don't recall seeing it in this thread. Watched the first season over the holidays and can honestly say it is the best thing I watched in 2021. Three of the four leads are Canadian. (EDIT) - I see JCon recommended it way back in September.

I see TSN has added Bo Levi to the panel, which made me cringe- until he spoke so glowingly about Demski. Still think Michael Reilly is the next best choice for a spot. He's a thoughtful, intelligent and well-spoken interview. -
I also think he had pressure coming from behind his right shoulder and started his throw from the top and lost power because of that.
