Game Day Thread - League Opener: Eskies
SpeedFlex27 replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
As a rookie, Streveler will have his ups & downs. What's needed is patience & a willingness by fans to understand that learning our offense & reading defenses, finding a receiver & making the right throw will take time. He should improve the more reps he gets in practice & with more playing time. Dieter Brock had to wait an entire year before he got his second start but when he did he made the most of it. Streveler has at least another 5 games to show what he's got as a qb & if he can make the most of it as well. Those 5 games will be invaluable experience wise for him. -

On September 2, 1974, just hours after quarterback Don Jonas had guided the Blue Bombers to a last play win on Labour Day over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Taylor Field, he was traded to the Hamilton Tiger Cats for qb Chuck Ealey. He was informed of the trade after the plane carrying the Bombers back to Winnipeg had landed just before midnight. ( I was on that Air Canada flight in case you're interested). As Ealey wasn't ready to play their next game vs the Edmonton Eskimos, the Bombers started their rookie backup qb Dieter Brock, fresh out of college from Jacksonville State with zero pro playing experience. Six days later on September 8, 1974 at Clarke Stadium, Dieter Brock was at the helm of the Blue Bombers for the very first time & for the only time that season as the Bombers starting qb . He got hammered as the Eskimos blitzed the crap out of their defense. Brock was either on his back or running for his life the entire game. His stats reflected how he was manhandled by the Esks defense. He attempted 27 passes, completed 12 for 176 yards, two interceptions, zero tds, a 44% completion average with a qb rating of 35.4. It would be almost an entire year before Brock would have another start against the Montreal Alouettes in September of 1975 at the Autostade after Ealey was traded to the Toronto Argonauts. Brock would then be the full time Bomber starter for the next 9 seasons. I watched that game back in 1974. Brock was hurried, hit & harassed on nearly every passing play the entire game. He looked totally lost playing against that Eskimo defense that day. Little or nothing worked for Brock that game as the Bombers lost 24-2. I actually felt sorry for Brock as he just couldn't handle what the Eskimos defense did to him. It was a tough, tough day for Brock. Obviously Brock learned from everything he went through that day as he became a CFL HOF qb with 34,830 yards passing, 210 touchdown passes & a 57% completion average during his career. He was the CFL's leading passer in 1978, 80, 81 & 84. On October 3, 1981 Brock attempted 48 passes, completed 41, 16 of those consecutively with an 87% completion average. He surgically dissected the Ottawa Rough Riders defense that day in one of the finest performances by a qb that I have ever seen. He was the CFL's West Division's All Star qb from 1980-82 & an All Canadian in 1980 & 81. He won the Jeff Nicklin Trophy as the West Division's MVP & was a back to back Schenley Award winner as the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 1980 & 81. Brock was elected to the Canadian Football Hall Of Fame in 1995. Tburg, had you watched that game when Brock got his ass handed to him in 1974 you'd never have thought he'd have any kind of CFL career. Compared to Brock's first start, Streveler looked 10 times better. He didn't panic & showed a lot of poise. He threw 3 TD passes compared to zero for Brock. So, comparing Streveler to Brock in their first game as starting qbs out of college is more accurate than comparing Brock to Tom Wilkinson back in 1974 or Streveler to Mike Reilly last Thursday night. I also seem to remember that the game in Edmonton 44 years ago was a cold, rainy day as well. -

I truly don't know what you're saying. You compare a CFL rook with no experience to a 6 year multiple CFL all star, Grey Cup champ & MOP & say we should be comparing Streveler's stats to Reilly's 408 yard passing performance & admit he came up short. So, therefore he didn't play well at all. That's how I read what you said & I can't make any sense of it. I was pleased by Streveler's performance. He threw 3 TD passes & I'm happy with that. I think he did better than just okay & I expected Reilly would outplay him. anyway As far as saying Willy had better stats but we all dump on him? Well again DW is a veteran qb but he plays timidly. He tries to play safe but invariably screws up as he did last night with that pick. He won't take chances then throws the game away with dumb decisions. He plays not to lose which he usually does & not to win which he rarely does. Willy's had his run & it hasn't been very good. That's how I look at Drew Willy as a CFL qb, I see POTENTIALLY a much better upside to Streveler than there ever was with Willy. More athletic, the ability to run with the ball & a strong arm. Will he ever reach his full potential? Damned if I know but we'll see how he is developed after Nichols gets back. -

Like I said, I don't get your point. Are you saying Streveler did or didn't have a good game? Decent game? Poor game? Were you satisfied with Streveler's play? I think if you compare most CFL qbs to Reilly they'll come up short on a good day. -

I have no idea what your point is here? I really don't. -

But you can't hold a rookie with no experience to a player who is a GC winner, GC MVP, CFL All Star & League MOP. You just can't. You compare Streveler's performance to the performances of other inexperienced qbs in a similar situation. That is the only fair way to do it that makes any sense. -
I hate Ewoks. Kill zem. Kill zem all.

This reminds me of Fantastic Voyage. Where scientists are shrunk down to destroy I believe a blood clot inside an important scientist by shrinking down & using a submarine that travels thru the bloodstream. They battle white blood cells & machrophages. It was filmed in 1966 so Lucas may have borrowed the idea from that film.
-
I have no desire to get into it with you as well. Others can do that if they want.
-
I haven't but I will read it. I agree with you about Lucas as Star Wars did seem to lose it's way with Return Of The Jedi & the Ewoks. The franchise changed from sci for adults to fantasy for kids to sell more merchandise. I'll read the link to see what Lucas' plan was.
-
I won't be sending you any private messages. I have no desire to have any conversation with you. You say what you say here & you get the responses back. You have nothing good to ever say about the Bombers & Jets.
-
I have read very few comments from you that are positive towards the Jets in the playoffs & now the Bombers. You're no fan as far as I'm concerned. .
-
Four things that I ner liked about Star Wars over the years... 1. Ewoks. I wish all those stupid little teddy bears would have been killed off. Almost turned me off SW back in 1981. 2. Jar Jar Binks. Like the Ewoks, the character was created for little kids. 3. Death of Hans Solo but understand why Harrison Ford wanted it done. 4. Death of Luke Skywalker. Almost the last straw for me & a lot of fans.
-
No, the more you post the more ridiculous you are. Go cheer for the Eskimos. You don't cheer for the Jets so it's not surprising that you have nothing good to say about the Bombers. Or Matt Nichols. Seems like you really are a troll.

I remember the night Linebacker Mike Curtis of the Baltimore Colts who took out this fan hard who ran on the field & tried to steal the ball back in 1971. I watched that game.

How many games has Reilly played compared to Streveler? Your bar of success for Streveler is way too high & unfair. Do you really think Reilly would have thrown for 408 yards as a rookie in his very first game? Not trying to be too negative towards your comments. Just pointing out it was grizzled veteran vs raw rookie. -
What an idiotic comment.

I haven't seen Solo yet & now I will wait until it comes out on Shaw On Demand in a few months.
-
Also when they spend big money at the MLB position but peanuts at qb.
-
Drew Willy is the kind of qb where he gets completions but his teams travel up & down between the 35 yard lines & then stops. Whenever they get into scoring position he can't deliver. He can't score when his team dep[ends on it. The guy shouldn't even be playing let alone starting. He can't even be a decent #2 as what you see is what you get. A whole lot of nothing.
-
Couldn't be more happier for Henoc Muamba.
-
Drew Willy is just a horrible qb. When he got off to that hot start in the 1st qtr, I didn't think he could keep it up.
