2024/2025 Blue Bombers Off-Season Thread
JohnnyAbonny replied to TBURGESS's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I’m less irritated at Grant not being re-signed than I am at the fact they didn’t give Chris Smith another shot, guy looked fast and explosive. -
Idk, I hate Toronto as a franchise both now and historically, but I mean 2 Grey cup wins and a 16-1 season in the first 4 years of a HC career is pretty damn impressive.

Not an exact clone or anything, but as a modern day equivalent, he’s closer than anyone else in the league. I used the comparison because Dinwiddie can be kind of crusty towards his players when it’s needed, the same way Cal was. I see similarities between Osh and Richie as “players coach” types, letting veteran players kind of run the room. Both approaches can work at different times, but I always thought the Head Coach needs to be a bit of a **** every so often.

At this point I’d rather have a high priced MLB than a second high priced receiver at or over 30 years old. Just scour down south and find a guy like Shamar Bridges to replace either Dalton or Kenny. Though I get it’s not that simple, I’m sure it’s easier to find a 6”3 guy who can jump and catch than it is to find a rookie all-star MLB. It’s not like we run a crazy complicated route tree. We won grey cups with top-end talent on defence and the o-line, and a stud RB. The club needs to get back to that line of roster imo This paying 4 skill players on offence reeks of the early 2000s, where it was always close but just not good enough to bring home the prize.

If they can find someone beforehand absolutely, just I’d rather not see a bunch of jobbers cycled through like Ali Mourtada or whoever. -

Common denominator in the 3 GC losses is getting outplayed on the lines, both sides. The teams that beat the Bombers were built from the lines out. Past 2 offseasons we’ve been building from the skill players in, just like the early 2000s Bombers. We’re headed for a big letdown if Walters doesn’t prioritize line talent in FA. They should have enough of a quality DL rotation to make Willie a 2nd and 5+ pass rush specialist. -

Gotta remember too, Willie’s a wrestling fan, and he kind of has his persona/gimmick which includes the showmanship on social media too. Remember the Hamilton tour he took? I doubt the guy wants move his family again. If he’s back they need to let him loose again though. To hell with the PKD, this ain’t basketball. Kill the quarterback. -

Meh, what else is he going to say? “I’ll be back cheap guys!” I’d be really surprised if Willie signed elsewhere, if anything I could see him retiring like Jeffcoat did if he can’t get the deal he wants here. -

Exactly, I see his potential as a bigger fatter Jon Oosterhuis -

Good for him if he does make the NFL. I’m not worried about Walters holding money back. **** it, go over the cap. Honestly if they don’t win the home GC, it’ll be a full on rebuild anyway. This is the year to throw money around like crazy, 2013 riders style. -
Know what, MOS = Dave Ritchie Dinwiddie = Cal Murphy

Personally, I wouldn’t pay both Schoen and Lawler again. I’d lean towards Schoen but it sounds like he’ll be the one heading to FA based of his comments. Put that money towards the trenches and a MLB in FA. From that list I’d keep: Strev, One of the big WRs Bryant, Dobson (not really a fan but you shouldn’t ditch more than one Canadian OL at a time imo) Willie, Garbutt Cole, Parker, Ford, Holm (if not overpaying) Sergio. FA priorities should be linemen (both sides) LB. -

Schmeck would make a better project OL, when they had him in the jumbo set he didn’t look out of place. I think he could improve at DL too honestly, year 1 to year 2 was a marked improvement, like the bar was low but still, it’s not like he’s old. He could have a nice career as a 2-way utility guy/depth piece. -

That’s his name now -
Agree with this. I’m trying to choose my words carefully as I don’t want to oversimplify it, but it seems like the past 3 years, the organization has made just getting to the cup an achievement award week/ fun road trip of sorts. I got the impression from interviews that it was more about “soaking it in” and “getting to spend another week with the guys” than preparing to play as they would during the regular season.

They can throw those crappy hockey jerseys in the burn pile as well. 100%. Bring back the football W on the sleeves too -
3 turds plus crappy honker. Long winter edition.

Demski couldn’t run this year, and we didn’t have another Canadian WR on the roster (or the PR even) to replace him. Far down the list of reasons for the loss, just another example. Actually it says a lot about our PR use too, which has been abysmal the last few seasons. -

I think Terry Wilson will be a good one too. He’s clearly got the arm strength and honestly looks as good or better than Brown did when he first got here. Still think they should have put Dolegala in last night though, experience counts for a lot in that situation. -

Yeah, no more creative ST stuff, rarely even throws a challenge flag. Really, zero innovation on offence or ST for 3 years straight now. Even on defence it took a bunch of shitty personnel at DL and LB to evolve it into a gimmick, that while somewhat successful, I’m not convinced is sustainable. -

They stepped in to overturn a TO offside, because I guess the guy wasn’t far enough over the line for their liking. Not the reason for the loss, but still a godamn joke nonetheless. -

Yeah, both seem to be one trick ponies. If teams don’t let them play video game football, there’s never another answer. It’s hit the deep shots, or suck uncontrollably. Buck (and MOS too honestly) don’t out scheme anyone ever. It’s win or lose on pure talent only. -

Bottom line is this team just can’t figure out Toronto, it’s been like that since 2019. We’ve been outcoached in every single game against them. -

Outside of Lawler, we didn’t have the personnel for that either.
