When you looked at the trades and saw player for player did you check to see if that player was actually playing in the NHL or a prospect? And if so, please list some and give the percentage of them that you feel would be comparable to us trading Frolik for something long term and immediate that would help the Jets. I took a quick look at last seasons deadline and I'd say at least 80% of the trades where for picks or prospects. It is probably higher, some names I just don't recognize and didn't bother looking up, but that also means those trades are pretty meaningless and fringe players. Frolik was a UFA. What team is going to give a comparable player who has term on their contract? It just makes no sense. Other teams are in the NHL to win, just like the Jets. When you are thinking about a trade, look at it from the other teams perspective, if I were them would I do this trade and why? And if the answer is no, chances are they aren't going to do it. You don't want Frolik because he is a UFA and are going to lose him, other teams are thinking the same thing. There is a reason no team deals their free agents at the deadline when they are in the playoffs. You want to give your team the best chance to win and you want to get in. The Jets made the playoffs by 4 points last season. If only two games go the other way, LA is in the playoffs instead of us. That margin is so low, I'm pretty confident that if you take one of our top 6 players out of the lineup and replace with with ... nothing ... we don't make the playoffs.

Little could easily be moved over to the wing. You draft d-men and centres first, wingers only if their talent is far above that of the other two. A centre can play wing much easier than a wing can play centre. Also you don't draft for your lineup today, you draft the best player for a lineup tomorrow. I agree. But I would also be disappointed if the Jets moved up to #3 and took Strome. Little, Scheif, Lowry, Copp are all young so they are set for years. Little doesnt like playing wing as much as center. Perreault is also a center. So is Petan. You always want to be improving, but I dont think Center is the greatest need for the Jets. And really, neither is D. But if its Hanifin they want, you're talking about a franchise LHD to go with our franchise RHD Trouba. Then they start filling in some of the mid six and you could have a contender for 10 years. I don't know a whole lot about Strome, and I'm not petitioning for them to do so, but my argument was more that suggesting you don't draft a centre because we are set is not sound logic in the NHL. I don't think Petan will be big enough to play centre in the NHL. Same with Perreault, he didn't play much centre last year. I'm not sure that Sheifele will ever be a true #1 centre. He is still young for sure, but just get the feeling he is destined to be a good #2 option. Is Strome that future #1 centre? Not sure.

That doesn't mean much if there is nothing more they want to discuss with him. Having said that, no one really knows who they want to move up for. It could even be Strome.

I'm leary of pencilling in any 1st year rookie D-Man onto the 2nd pairing, let alone making the roster, regardless of how highly touted they are. Even if we move up and draft Hanifin, no guarantee he is on the team next year. Don't want to rush defensemen.

I would take that deal for Frolik. That is likely around $4M next year and escalating up from there.

A team that is playoff bound will only give you picks and prospects. Go look at the majority of the trades on or around deadline day for the last decade.

Not really. Anyone trading for an expiring contract is doing so for a playoff push. So you aren't getting a comparable roster player, they want to enhance the talent on their roster. You are getting picks and prospects or another expiring contract, in which case what is the difference? Otherwise, why would another team trade for him?

Strongly disagree. We don't make the playoffs if we trade him. Sure we got swept but that is invaluable experience for the younger players like Scheifele, Trouba, Lowry. There is value in holding on to a player even if he walks. Can't always be trading for draft picks.

6th round draft pick for a UFA who is allowed to hear offers from other teams. They must think they can sign him and don't want him to change his mind before July 1st.

If money didn't come into the picture I would take Frolik over Burmi for sure. Burmi has a lot to prove in terms of attitude and being a positive for the team. Those intangibles don't show up on a stat sheet, and Frolik brings that stuff in spades.

This article is a year old, but it is still very applicable since Frolik's numbers last year were very similar to the year before. I don't think Frolik will improve drastically on his numbers on where he is today. Plus the cap hasn't really gone up a whole heck of a lot, so there shouldn't be that much of an escalation in the comparables. But if your salary is starting at $5M in year 1 and escalating from there, I think it is too much of an overpay.

And the year after that -- "Well Perreault isn't a #2 C/LW and he's going to want to be paid like one so we better get rid of him." And so on, and so on. I mean, who exactly are you comparing Frolik to when you say he's a sub-par 2RW? Look around the league and you might be surprised by who is passing for a #2 RW on other teams. We could do a lot worse. And Burmi is a lot worse, if that's the solution. You can't look at Chicago and say "Well player X wouldn't be a second liner on Chicago so we shouldn't pay him like a second liner." No, I'd be prepared to pay Ladd more then I am Frolik. As for Perreault,if he is looking for 5 - 6M AAV, then I'm not sure I would take him at that price either.

We need to establish a solid top 6 and have good depth guys in the bottom 6 capable of moving up. You can't just sign no-one and say "OK let's go with a **** lineup this year because otherwise our hands will be tied in the future." You can't mortgage the future for the present but you can't sacrifice the present for the future either. It really depends on what dollar value and term Frolik wants. There are times when you are better off sacrificing the present for the future. Sometimes you have to walk away from a deal if it isn't the best thing for you. Frolik is very good, and I want to re-sign him and keep him. But is Frolik a legitimate 2nd line winger on a contending team? I know there is a lot of PK and other things he does well, but if you are going to pay him as a 2nd line winger, then that is as good as your team will be.
