  1. Doesn't make any sense to me. Cut a guy and you don't have to pay him for the season, unless it was a guaranteed contract of some sort. If it was, then huge mistake by the Bombers. According to the reports when all this went down, he had been paid a 60k signing bonus. If his salary would have been in the 100k range (pure guess), then we would have paid him 40k not to go to another team.
  2. Didn’t want to be put traded in the title because people would think the Jets traded him, but he was traded between WHL teams late last night. The Kelowna Rockets (25-4-3-0) got Morrissey and winger Gage Quinney from the Prince Albert Raiders for Austin Glover, Jesse Lees, a 2016 2nd round bantam pick and 2017 3rd round bantam pick. Looks like Kelowna is already stacked and just adding to make a run. Good for Morrissey to get some potential championship experience. Morrissey has 7 goals and 21 assists in 26 games this season.
  3. This post is a bit off into left field, and not even sure how this scenario popped into my mind, but based on Wikipedia, here is how the CFL draft order is determined (couldn’t find anything explaining it explicitly on the CFL site, but the cfldb.ca site uses the same rule for determining waiver eligibility in the first third of the season which it says is also used to determine draft order): With the cross over rules we have in place, if the 4th place team in the West has a tied record with the 3rd place team in the East, the 3rd place team in the East makes the playoffs no matter what. However, if in the 2 games in which those teams played each other, the Western team beat the Easter team both times, according to the tie breaker rules above, the Eastern team would get a higher selection in the draft. This would mean a playoff team would get to draft above a non-playoff team (as long as they didn't play in the Grey Cup). Is this just another whacky CFL rule? Does this rule make sense? Or do I just have too much time on my hands and should get back to work? Yep... should get back to work...
  4. Anyone else see Twitter have a mini explosion last night with this tweet: Kind of funny, but all the same nice to see that we beat them like we did last night after that.
  5. Maguire is going to be 40 next summer. And while he has a "youthful" look to him, unless they want to take a story arc with an ageing Spiderman, he is getting too old to play Spiderman / Peter Parker as the struggling news photographer.
  6. I'm no psychiatrist, but to me this is wanting attention.
  7. I'm not outraged at it, I actually really don't care about those things. The post was more in reference to Kane's reputation as a goof. As to your questions though: Kind of a silly question because Ladd would never do this. In fact, I can't think of many other players who would do it. First I'd ask you that if Kane had 30 goals would he even be doing this, as he'd be getting the attention he seems to seek? And yes, given Kane's history with these things, and this not being an isolated incident, I think people would still care.
  8. A goof? Doesn't everyone tweet out pictures of themselves doing push-ups with stacks of money strapped to their backs? Or better yet, use a money phone, then remind people of its anniversary?
  9. You have to wonder why Kane got 2 and Lowry got 1 for pretty much the same play. Either way though, it was a stupid play on Kane's part, and a suspension was coming. There isn't a huge difference between 1 and 2 games.
  10. Hard to say, but you would think most agents would at least be smart enough to calculate what percentage of the cap the old salaries represented and extrapolate from there. Won't know the full impact (whether it is a uniform escalation across all positions) until a few QBs and prime Canadians sign to set the market. My guess is more money goes to Canadians, QBs, and established stars as I don't believe the league minimum was bumped up as much as the cap. As a fan, I sure wish the CFL published salaries like the NHL. As a player, not sure I would appreciate my salary being publicly available for anyone to see.
  11. Wasn't really expecting this.

  13. Edited and deleted a few posts in this thread as well. It would be nice to getting back to talking about football without taking shots at other posters. Must be the off season ... or the Christmas season ... or both.
  14. Edited / deleted a few posts in this thread. Lets try to keep posts about the topic on hand and not about specific posters.
  15. Had to be a make up call for that first penalty they called of the 2 man down.
  16. Buff had a good game back in D
  17. Deleted a lot on this thread. Let's keep this thread about Mike Riley and not about the rest
  18. Chase Balisy who was signed to an AHL contract (so I believe the Jets would need to give him an NHL contract) in the summer currently leads the Ice Caps in points with 7 Goals and 11 Assists in 21 games. Klingberg also has 14 points in 24 games. Maybe it is time to give one of these guys a shot rather then playing both Peluso and Thorburn. There is also O'Dell, Cormier, or Lipon who could possibly be called up.
  19. That is the only way I can see it working as well. There would be a mighty cold wind up there in late November.
  20. I'd really like to see what Burmi would do under Maurice. It is no secret him and Noel never got along. With Maurice's experience in the KHL, wonder if he could get through to Burmi.
  21. Hard question to answer. It would certainly mean that we wouldn't trade Buff until at least the off season Wouldn't give up a first because I don't think we yet have enough talent to really complete and go far in the playoffs. We seem to be very strong in goaltender depth prospect wise right now, but goalies can be so tough to judge, not sure how much a team would be willing to give up to get one of them. I look at our prospects and what I'd be willing to give up this year, and don't see a lot that would get us much in return. I would say Ehlers, Petan, and Morissey would be on the not trade list. That leaves guys like Chase De Leo, Jack Glover, Kitchton as players that other teams may have an interest in. http://www.hockeysfuture.com/teams/winnipeg-jets/ I'd have to look at other teams and their contracts. But certainly a Buff trade will wait til the off-season now. And I think the importance of that will come down to - does Buff want to be here (the whole forward vs defence question) and it might be related to Ladd's plans too. We know Wheeler, Little etc talked to each other about their deals and agreed to stay here together and build something. I'd assume Ladd and Buff were in on those discussions but we will see. At the deadline, the Jets would be looking to trade assets they dont value (lower level prospects, Burmi/Telegin) or possibly someone like Comrie to a team that is outside the playoffs and wants to part with a pending UFA or a player with 1+ years left in a salary dump. Im not sure the Jets would want a player with term unless it someone they see as a long term investment like Frolik. Jets would be looking for either a UFA rental in the middle six or a younf player thats still an RFA. There will be teams with players to dump at the deadline that the Jets could get without giving up much. Once you get closer to the deadline though and the bidding wars start, the prospect wants go up. Burmi might get you something if the other team thought they could bring him back. Telegin doesn't have much value IMO. The problem with the Jets dumping assets they don't value, is most other teams don't value them either. If you want to make a "splash" with a big name pending UFA, you are going to have to give up more then that, because other teams closer to competing to the cup will be willing to give up more then you. You can probably get someone to bolster our 3rd and 4th line depth for a lower draft pick and/or middling prospect, which wouldn't be a bad thing for this team.

  23. I took a look at the ice time of the forward in the Chicago / St Louis game last night, figuring those teams would be a good measure. St Louis had Steen with over 24 minutes, 3 guys just over 20. Their bottom 3 players had 5:33 (Porter) , 5:43 (Reaves), and 8:59 (Lapierre) Chicago was a lot more balance with no forward over 20. Toewes (19:27), Kane (18:09), and Smith (17:44). Their lowest ice time was Bickell (7:50), Carcillo (8:24), and Nordstrom (9:02) 12 penalties in the game though. Steen had 8 minutes of PP time and 1:30 in PK time, so special teams could skew those stats.
