  1. The Calgary Stampeders have first-hand knowledge of the carnage Greg Carr can inflict on a defensive secondary.

After all, the sky-scraping receiver caught two touchdowns — including one that shaped up as the game-winner for the Saskatchewan Roughriders with just 52 seconds on the clock — in the 2012 West Division semifinal.

Only a 68-yard touchdown bomb to Romby Bryant — unleashed by Drew Tate with 20 seconds remaining — allowed the Stampeders to advance with a 36-30 victory at McMahon Stadium.

Some eight months after the heartbreak, Carr is switching sides in one of the Canadian Football League’s fiercest rivalries.

The 27-year-old former Winnipeg Blue Bomber/Eskimo/Roughrider is expected to report this morning to McMahon for his first day of work on the Calgary practice roster.

The Riders released Carr last week in anticipation of the return of the talented (and moderately expensive) Geroy Simon to the lineup and to make way for newcomers like Eron Riley.

“Greg has big-play capabilities.” Saskatchewan head coach Corey Chamblin was telling the Edmonton Journal before the season opener for the Riders at Commonwealth Stadium. “He’s a big, tall receiver. I’d like for him to take a step and show he’s a dominant receiver in this league.

“He has the height, he has the size, and he has the ability.”

No one is about to question Carr’s natural abilities and physical attributes. This is a guy who reeled in back-to-back 74- and 71-yard pass-and-run touchdowns for his first two CFL receptions back in 2010.

At six-foot-six, 214 pounds, Carr gives his quarterback — whether that’s Drew Tate, Kevin Glenn or Bo Levi Mitchell — a big target to throw at with a built-in height advantage in a league populated by smallish defensive backs.

The Florida State product has deceptive speed and can serve as a deep threat on the outside or fight for the tough balls over the middle.

Carr will likely need to prove himself on the practice roster before cracking a starting receiving corps that includes Maurice Price, Joe West, Nik Lewis, and Marquay McDaniel.

Carr’s best CFL season came in 2011 when he caught 46 catches for 648 yards and four touchdowns for the Bombers.

“I have a whole lot of confidence in my ability,” Carr told the Edmonton Journal. “I know that no matter what, I’m going to work hard to get to where I need to be.”

  2. Attaboy for the Argos, getting almost 30k fans in the Skydome!  I would sure like to see the CFL become as popular in Toronto as it deserves to be.

It's just like I said over in other thread, all four Eastern teams have suspect defences or rebuilding defences, there are going to be some bigtime offensive fireworks in the early going.

I disagree with this whole heartedly .. our defense showed itself to be quite capable .. held Calvillo to 260 yards passing, a completion percentage of 57% and for the better part of the game, made life miserable for him .. when you consider how often we gave Montreal a short field .. the quick changes .. the special teams TD .. I think our defense acquitted itself quite well .. questions were answered about the strength of our linebackers (or at least the initial indication are that Parker and Dunn should be fine moving forward - only to get better) .. we generated decent pressure .. now it's about consistency.

  3. Coming from someone with a Pierce jersey, he is holding us back. Over the last few years people have been so worried about whether or not Buck was healthy, they failed to notice he has done very little even when he is.

    The truth.

People can point to the statistic that says we win games when Buck starts and finishes a game .. but that has more to do with continuity at the position rather than overall performance.

  4. re: Jovon's PI -- the call should have been a wash, because AB3 was interfering as much as JJ was. As for the premise of this thread, I actually burst out laughing. All through Joe Mack's tenure, all I've heard from Bomber fans is how we're too young. Not enough vet presence. Now we're too old? Get lost...you need a good combo, and I think we have that this year. The team showed a lot of good things last night that are being overshadowed by the fact that we didn't get 2pts. We're going to surprise a lot of people this year and win a lotta games...

I think Bob, Mitch and Doug nailed it on the post game show last night: the East is going to be a dog fight this year.  We demonstrated that we have the talent to compete and the firepower to score in a hurry.  Now we just need to be able to develop some consistency.

  5. I tried to join the chat room live from the stadium but man is it hard to get consistent cell reception in there. I don't think it helps that I'm sitting right in front of a giant concrete wall but still ... spotty cell service all night.

Bizarre .. I actually had really good cell phone coverage last night .. noticeably better than in the old barn .. how was the live chat in here last night?

  6. When you think of the Fly .. think Wing-T or a spread option offense .. it's predicated on mis-direction .. use of no huddle .. bread and butter being a WR / Slot Sweep .. it's an offense that provides you with a balanced attack (not in terms of run / pass ratio but rather from all areas of the field .. sides .. depth etc .. then blends in an effective mix of run and pass).  The idea is that this type of balance doesn't lend itself to tendancies and keeps a defense off balance.

  7. Burke on Etienne:

-- Jade, it's time: Receiver Jade Etienne will be in a starting slotback spot for Thursday's opener. Burke said he's pleased for the third-year product of Regina.

"I'm really happy for him," Burke said. "He's really worked hard in the off-season, at training camp and mini-camp and all of that. He's matured greatly from when he first got here."

Etienne has taken advantage of his opportunity, some of it created when slotback Kito Poblah went out with an injury.

"It was up in the air when Kito got hurt," Burke said. "He's got all the reps now. If he goes out and does a great job, it's probably his job."

  8. I would hope so ....

I echo this sentiment ..  we have our guy in Muamba .. now we most decidedly need to bring someone in to push the backup talent at that spot .. I have a lot of respect for what Labbe has given to this team .. and for a long time his contributition was underrated .. but the drop off from Muamba to Labbe in terms of athleticism and playmaking ability is a liability.
