that stat was bullshit to begin with because there were lots of games PIerce was playing like complete crap in and had the team in a losing position but then got hurt and didn't finish the game. It's not so much a when he played he was always good more of a when he played bad he also wound up getting hurt. PIerce has been a brutal qb for over a year now, probably closer to 2 years than anyone wants to admit. This move was a long time coming.
agreed. There were plenty of games that Buck got hurt in where you could have easily justified pulling him for not performing.
-
Agree with Mike. If I was Goltz I would be little pissed about that statement. You don't throw a teammate under the bus like that.
Exactly.
Like it or not, Pierce is basically telling people he thinks he is better than Goltz.
-
How is he not being professional? Did he say he won't mentor Goltz or Hall? No. He just said he wasn't informed of that he would be mentoring them when it was brought up by reporters. Not a difficult concept to understand. He said quite clearly in the quote I provided that he wants the team to win, and help the guys along.
Once again....
"It’s my job to stay positive with the guys and help and I’ve always done that in my career and I’ve always been positive in adverse situations. It doesn’t mean that I agree with the decision, because I don’t. But I want this team to win and I want to help these guys along."
That part is professional.
"I’m not happy about it at all," said Pierce today after practice. "I don’t feel in my opinion it’s the right move. I feel that I can contribute and, obviously, they don’t feel the same. This part is not. Neither was the quote I can't track down right now where he said last week that he "disagreed" with them not playing him vs. Calgary.
-
But what do people expect him to say, it feels great to be demoted? How do you think it feels? He's said that he wants the team to win, and will help the team win in his current capacity. What more do people want? That's all you can ask of someone that's just been asked to take a seat. Just because he says that he was not approached about helping mentor Goltz and Hall, doesn't mean he won't do it, and he never says that he won't do it either. He's a competitor just like the other 41 guys who lace up every game, and I guarantee you if you were to take any starter and bench them, and ask how they feel, they wouldn't be singing sunshine and rainbows. They are competitive, professional athletes.
But the stance he's taking on it is just not professional.
I don't expect him to be happy.
I do expect him to take it like a professional, not like an entitled brat who doesn't realize he doesn't have it anymore.
-
Buck's demotion isnt about injuries. Sure, he had that abdomen injury but he dressed the following week. Goltz got hurt his first start. This about playing ability and I agree Buck has not played up to snuff but this team has been flat lousy around him too.
What was that stat with Buck before this season, team was 13-3 with him finishing a game. He was a winner. And when they lost it wasnt because he crapped the bed, its because they're a bad team.
This might provide some consistency but we still have a bad O line, bad OC, bad DB's, lack of maturity and leadership, a rookie head coach, a rookie CEO and a GM that knows he's gone by the end of the season if not next week.
Bull.
If anything, it's the other way around.
-
Pierce said he was told of the decision a couple of days ago, but when he was asked about involvement with the game-planning today, added this:
"I’m in shape to play right now. Nothing was ever spoken to me about bringing young guys along right now and helping in that aspect. That was never talked to me about it."
I find this very interesting.
If he knew about the decision ... why didn't he understand what the role was? Is he clueless? Does he not understand the duties of a veteran third-string quarterback?
-
In Pierce's last 18 games (so a full season of appearances) here are his numbers:
And let's not discount the fact that we have to go all the way back to September of 2011 to total up 18 appearances.
240/395 (60.7%) for 3125 yards, 9 TD and 21 INT
In the same time frame (for fair comparison) here are the combined numbers of every other Bomber QB
394/662 (59.5%) for 4638 yards, 19 TD and 23 INT
For the record, here are some more numbers to chew on over that time frame.
Pierce is throwing an INT every 18.8 passes, while the other QBs averaged an INT every 28.7 passes
Pierce averaged 7.95 passing yards per attempt, while the other QBs averaged 7 passing yards per attempt.
Pierce averaged a TD pass every 43.8 (!!!) passes, while the other QBs averaged a TD pass every 34.8 (still horrible)
In that time frame, Pierce had one 300 yard passing game and three games where he threw more touchdowns than interceptions. That is absolutely horrible. In comparison, the other QBs we've trotted out have pieced together five 300 yard games (including a 400 yard game) and eleven games with more passing touchdowns than interceptions.
The last time Buck Pierce had a game with 2+ TD and 0 INT? August 26, 2011. He's only done it three times in four years with the Bombers. Joey Elliott and Alex Brink matched that number in 2012 combined.

If he was told before the season started that he was the #1 QB this season, I can see why he's angry.
Has he played great? No. But we know he *can* play great and he's shown flashes (albeit briefly) this season also. If I'm him I'm saying "What more can I do? You tell me I'm number 1, you dont do jack about the horrible O line, you have an idiot for O Co-Or, our plays are predictable, we've eliminated the run game and half my receivers have been injured this year".
I'm not saying we dont need an improvement at the QB position but it's not like Buck has had a great situation to work with here. And if Goltz is able to do anything it will simply be because he can run away from all the trouble coming his way moreso than Buck. But that doesnt mean our O line is suddenly better or the OC suddenly has a clue.
This situation is becoming another circus. And Clown Shoe Butchko better his arms around it damn fast.
PS: Wish the government would beg True North to become the "operators" of the team and stadium. Someone has to be truly accountable, not a board of dimwits. You've got legit football people on that board, what are they doing to correct this? The CEO is a glorified salesman. The GM is a Dead Man Walking and he knows it. The Head Coach is a brillient DC in way over his head this year and he has no help from his Coordinators. What the hell is going on??
My response to that would be simple.
While the situation isn't ideal, less experienced quarterbacks (Brink, Elliott and Goltz) have ALL outperformed you with the same tools at their disposal.
-
Yes because one chooses if they would like to be hurt or not. Brilliant! No one will be doing anything as long as Crowton as the OC, and the only time our QB's looked half decent under him was when Buck was practically holding his hand through playcalling.
He is a terrible quarterback.
He was averaging two first downs a possession roughly 11% of the time this year. Goltz is up around 40% of the time, which is around the league average.
He hasn't been any good since the 2011 Banjo Bowl when he threw 5 picks and his stats back that up. Almost everyone who has watched him play the past two years, whether it be under LaPolice or Crowton, knows that he is toast.
Now he's coming out into the public eye and bitching about how we're treating him?
I say GTFO Buck.
-
So get rid of him right now.
This is the **** I'm talking about. What a clown.
Maybe if he wanted to play QB he should stop getting hurt and start actually doing something with the football.
-
That's such bullshit. What's he going to do? "Oh sorry guys, I know you want me to be the starter but I'm not good enough so maybe you should move on."
Although my personal choice would have been for Buck to retire by now, I understand that's not realistic.
What I'm talking about is more his piss poor attitude when he hasn't been playing. Tired of seeing him mope on the bench by himself instead of doing clipboard duty at all times to help out his teammates. Annoyed that his reaction to not playing last week was to disagree with the coaching staff in a public forum. His attitude when he's not the #1 guy has not been great.
-
You think they would start Max Hall over a healthy Buck Pierce? Come on....
Well, I guess we know the answer to that now.

If this is truly the end of the Buck era, the guy deserves a lot of thanks and appreciation by this fanbase. He's a true warrior who would crawl on the field if they let him. He plays good football behind a terrible O-line that might have contributed to the end of his career. And he never complained.
If he's being a good solider and taking on a player-coach role and truly embraces it, he's giving to the organization once again.
I dont think this is a set up to release Buck. I think its QB insurance AND if they really do feel Buck has a career as a coach ahead of him, then good on them for developing him into that role. I would love to see Buck here in some regard for years to come.
I know you're a big Buck guy, but I don't think he deserves a parade for anything. If anything, his selfishness has contributed negatively to this team over the past two years.

Just wanted to make note of the fact that we passed 10000 posts earlier this morning as a community.
Good job guys, we've slowly built ourselves a pretty awesome little place to talk Bombers in a really short period of time.
Also wanted to say thanks to everyone for making the moderator position here a really easy one. It's been great so far.

I won't be able to find my comments over on the other site, but I'm pretty sure I saw this coming when it happened.
A terrible hire by Popp.

Yes, should have specified.
why does that seem ridiculously cheap?
-
$52 for the pair?

I'm usually on that bus but not this year. I've seen enough blowout losses in Regina to last a lifetime.
Were you on it the last two years?
I've gone with TBBC for the last 2 games.
-
how do you mean? Collaros is elusive and improvisational, Harris is a pocket guy.
Most fans want to examine attributes, mobility, etc.
You apparently examined their packages.
-
There was no subterfuge in having Harris in the game. he's a different type than Collaros (pocket passer like Ray) and has a different package.
Harris and Collaros were co #2 QBs. Harris is a top prospect as well and was ahead of Collaros on the DC all last season (and looked very good against Hamilton when they were fighting for their lives against him).
You're really going in a whole other direction with the scouting report.
-
Not sure there is enough alcohol to get you through the pummeling that the Bombers are going to endure this year...
My bar is set pretty low.
I have yet to see the Bombers score a touchdown at Labour Day.
-
I just locked up a spot on the bus with Ray's crew.
Always a good time.
Goltz Named Starter For Rest Of Season
in Blue Bomber Discussion

I don't expect Goltz to do anything.
But he shouldn't have to. Buck should be a better teammate.
I'll be honest though ... the locker room is tired of this sideshow. The team as a whole has been ready to move on for a while.
