Equalization payments explained: The feeling of Western alienation may be understandable, but complaining about equalization payments is backing the wrong horse. Economist Trevor Tombe explains how it works: “First, and most importantly, none of the equalization dollars are paid by Alberta—it’s a federal program. The federal government pays equalization out of general revenue... “Albertans contribute [only] 17 per cent of federal revenue for the simple reason that Alberta’s economy is 17 per cent of Canada’s. Two-thirds of federal revenue is from taxes on income, plus another one-quarter from taxes on consumption through sales taxes, excise taxes and import tariffs. Overall, 90 per cent of federal revenue comes from taxes...”

Stanley Bryant creamed Paul Friesen

He threw the ball with zip in practice AND he gives good interviews.

Not even theoretically possible.

Hey - do we get to keep the 1.8 billion in equalization payments? In all seriousness, Pallister likes to pretend he's pissed at Trudeau, but JT has been very good to Manitoba
-
There is one issue on which Alberta definitely has a point. They have a population of over 4 million and have 34 seats in Parliament Look at Manitoba with 14 seats and population of over 1 million Looking at it apples to apples - Alberta should have over 50 seats, maybe even 60

All the QB injuries this year have more to do with the rule changes than anything else. DBs are not pretty much not allowed to cover (by the rules) so the best pass D is the pass rush.

Streveler in that situation - no comment.

A good team that is curiously inexplicable at times.

When I see other O & G nations using carbon taxes and other environmental measures in lockstep with their oil industry, which then gives them a better image and better markets world wide - I seriously question whether Albertans are being slighted as much they believe they are.
-
Manitoba receives more equalization payments per capita than Quebec does - as do Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
-
I think it is also about how we are perceived on the world stage and in selling our oil to world markets.

Here's an article from January 2015 - that sheds plenty of light on what ails the oil and gas industry. As it turns out, not all oil executives were against the idea of carbon tax - some even viewed it as a necessity. Here's a snippet: “It’s hard oil,” says Camarta. “It takes a lot of engineering, a lot of capital, a lot of people and a lot of energy.” If Canada truly wants to be an “energy superpower,” it needs to do a much better job offsetting those extra emissions—or else face a future where a trillion-dollar resource is undermined by a $20 T-shirt." https://www.macleans.ca/politics/ottawa/stephen-harper-oils-worst-enemy/ Please READ the article before commenting.

When you start hearing right wing die hards like Charles Adler saying the CPC needs to move to the centre AND be more accommodating to minorities, the writing is on the wall. To have Liberals come with a dozen seats of a majority after everything that's happened, speaks volumes.
-
Yes, but they both backed off that statement.
-
Libs within a dozen seats (give or take) of a majority. Popular vote is almost even. The B.C. vote will be HUGE tonight.
-
To be determined. And everything will change depending on what happens tonight.

Money stashed into a rainy day fund should not be a reason to still have a deficit. Unless, of course, it’s politically convenient to still have one.
-
I have provided additional info - directly from the article.
-
They are still reporting a deficit - I have a problem with that. "Commenting on the results Thursday, Fielding said the government is now in "striking distance" of balancing its books."
-
You didn't read the article. "The increase was driven by strong growth in personal and corporation income tax and sales tax revenues (the PST had yet to be lowered), and major federal transfers. Some government businesses, most notably Manitoba Hydro and Manitoba Public Insurance, made more money than anticipated."
-
They are busy trying to pretend there is still a deficit - when there isn't. They have been corrected twice by the auditor general: https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/manitoba-numbers-game-561473592.html And what is the primary reason that they have a 9 million surplus? Increased transfer payments from Ottawa.
