Game Day Thread - Montreal @ Winnipeg - 7:30pm
TBURGESS replied to TrueBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Tonight's game is a should win. We are the better team in the standings and on the field. Montreal only scores about 8 points a game on the road. Even with Willy under siege, we should be able to put up more than 8 points. Still... Montreal has a very good defence that gets after the QB with the front 4. They should be able to shut down our run because everyone can and get lots of pressure. If they can force a few turnovers, they can keep the score close and maybe even pull off a win. Their offense isn't much to watch, but Whittaker could have a big night and they could own the TOP. If they can complete a few deep balls, they could steal a game. I'm expecting a close game without much scoring and the Bombers pulling out a win. -
Do you wear your Bomber gear to work on game day?
TBURGESS replied to gbill2004's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
Nope. Wouldn't be useful. Not in Vancouver. -
Best helmets by a long shot so far IMHO.
-
From a credible source?
-
For me these will always be the PP uniforms (Pigeon Poop).
-
After an afternoon to digest them... Nope. Won't buy one. Don't expect 100's of them at the game either. We don't have a strong military tie in.
-
Wait a few months and get it for half price or less.

I see where you're coming from but... you're basing everything on the assumption that the eastern teams will always be bad. The same number of teams will be without playoff revenue with or without a single division. With a single division, it will always be the worst teams. I don't think the East vs West is what makes the Grey Cup a national celebration. I'd rather have the two best teams play. I do believe that we need as many teams in the CFL as possible and that losing any would cause major concerns. Giving the east free spots on the Bingo card might allow more of them to be viable. Maybe it's one reason that the CFL has lasted so long.
-
One of the issues is the lost opportunity. If they'd designed a uni as nice as BC's, (Example from a non-designer:Royal Blue background, gold piped numbers, and a helmet with the Bomber brand on it), they'd sell thousands of the things. The talk would be about using them as our standard unis instead of how ugly we're expecting them to be.

My top is well secured..... Just not impressed with that look, even on a limited basis.....for the club I've supported for 47 years (ISO's comment above) Not even against "change", in the general concept....if it is done with some style and class. and yes, if people like this, and are willing to pay the freight.....more power to them. These jersies aren't for you, or Iso, or anyone else who's supported the club for years and years. It's an attempt to make the CFL relevant to younger people. How does a bowling ball helmet, or tartan, or Watermellon make the CFL relevant to younger people?
-
Interesting statement. How would that work?
-
1 division please. The whole east vs west thing doesn't work anymore. Best teams should make the play offs. Worst teams shouldn't.
-
Personally, I'd only buy the Royal Blue., but folks have a choice of which of the 4 uni's they will buy. I doubt the new ones will make up much of the total and most will be 'instead of', not 'in addition to' the other Jerseys.
-
Horrible helmets. Smirking Hank instead of smiling. IMO so far: BC Toronto Ottawa Regina I expect the Riders to stay on the bottom as the rest of the jerseys come out, but you just never know.

I am completely 100% sold on O'Shea and I like some of what Walters has done but he still has to show me a lot in terms of american scouting to get fully on board. That we have to use Romby Bryant and a hobbling Vega because the other options we have aren't good enough is a concern. I'll give him time but he's gotta do better next year in that area. Maybe it's just the transition to a new scouting staff who knows but I expect better. I'm guessing Romby is an O'Shea choice as he was on Toronto last year. -
How good is our offensive play calling?
TBURGESS replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
ENOUGH!!! Stop hanging off of MB's ahem.... OC abilities. MB's an average OC. He looks good when you compare him to Crowton but using Crowton as a measuring stick is insane. He's one of the worst OC's we've ever had. Willy's the biggest difference between this year and last year. Hall & Goltz running MB's offense was a disaster last year and would be this year too. We're having to throw the ball 40 times a game to stay competitive. Willy's taking a beating and our OC's not changing anything to help him out. A run game is very important and will get more important the later it gets in the season. We don't have one right now. Our best offensive game was the first one. The last two games have been lots of 2 and outs with a few big plays and we've lost the TOP big time. -

I'm a bit disheartened right now... It will become full fledged if we lose to Montreal. We are way ahead of where I thought we'd be... That means I've upped my expectations. We could have beaten the Riders... We could have lost to Montreal, Hamilton and Ottawa. Every team gets a short week.... Riders won theirs on the road. We didn't even come close. We've had great luck on the penalty call front.... Except for the last game, but they were all actual penalties IMHO. Lots of big upgrades at QB, Receiver, DB and kicker... Lots of work to do on our O line, D line, Tackling, Running, Stopping the Run. I'm sold on Miller, Walters and the change of the whole management/Scouting structure and the number of coaches. I'm neutral on O'Shea and still not sold on our OC or DC. -
We got out coached and out played. The D ran out of gas. The O line couldn't stop their blitzes and stunts. Willy got hit hard and often and couldn't handle the pressure. Under 200 yards passing and 48 of it was the 2nd last play. IIRC, Toronto took more penalties than we did and they had a lot of yards called back too. Forget about this game. Nothing we can do about it. Time to look forward to the Montreal game. They are exactly the team we need to turn this around, unless they find a running game and some accuracy at QB.
-
Big A. Small numbers. Still way better than Regina's watermelon jerseys.
-
This games no gimmi. Toronto's coming off of a bye week and are probably still plenty pissed at the embarrassment we laid on them in the first game of the season. We're coming off a very short week and the last game was extremely physical and we're on the road. That being said, looking at the depth charts, who the heck is Ricky Ray going to throw the ball to? Their RB's don't scare me at all. I doubt they will get a lot of pressure, so Willy could have a field day against them. The only way I see them beating us is to run the ball and complete a lot of short passes to stay on the field. Our D could run out of steam in the 4th if they own the time of possession and I don't see them doing that. Stay away from penalties and turnovers, and this one should be ours.
-
I'll be shocked if Brink makes any difference to the Al's O. Smiths still a better QB than Brink even with his accuracy issues. I gotta admit I heard circus music when I read the title.

They are overly emotional. Reflection of the HC or reflection of the players they hired? Probably a bit of both. Everyone knows that Stewart is a hot head and is going to take some penalties and it doesn't matter if the HC is PLAP, Burke or Austin. -
Do they really? I want you to actually justify that comment because I see a team that lost because they turned the ball over when they got it and that isn't affected by the Riders picking up meaningless rushing yards (and yes they were meaningless because they didn't result in a hell of a lot of points) Cuz you asked so nicely.... Rider's offense was almost non-existent before they started running Messam. Continue with that and our offense gets more chances with the ball, their defense gets tired due to lopsided TOP, they lose the field position battle and the game. The yards weren't meaningless, although your posts are getting more and more so. As I thought, you're going with the "just because" reasoning. The Bombers got the ball back plenty of times with plenty of time left and they utterly failed to move the ball. Now in your world apparently more chances would have made it better? I dunno about that, we've seen this offense bog down before against certain defenses and it doesn't matter how many times they get the ball back. Willy wasn't feeling it clearly, he was throwing dangerous passes, they couldn't get the run game going... More opportunities with the ball I don't think would have helped, and to be quite honest, I think without Messam the Riders were a more dangerous team because they would have actually tried passing the ball rather than settling into the conservative 6 yards a carry game they did and they might have broken a big play or two and scored more points. I'll give up 100+ yards in a half if the qb barely cracks 100 passing. As I thought, you don't know reasoning when you see it. You want it to be about 1 thing and you've decided that's turnovers. Anything else is illogical to you. You can't just take away our bad plays and say if we didn't have them we would have won. It's true, but it's simplistic and unrealistic. Playing your game, Regina would take away the first 'Illegal contact' penalty on our only drive and we wouldn't have scored a TD or a FG in that drive. They'd take away the 13 men in the huddle penalty and have scored FG at the end of the half. They'd take away the trip in the endzone that cost them the second TD and possibly another INT. 2 penalties and 1 bad play and all of a sudden, we've lost 14 points and they've gained 3. OMG, we weren't even close! LOL. Football games are won and lost on many plays by many players. Close games come down to a handful of plays which if they went the other way would change the winner and loser. My last point, although I suspect you've stopped reading already... If we'd have signed Messam instead of Regina we'd have won the last game even if he didn't touch the ball because he couldn't hurt us.

Botched hold on a FG cost them the win against Calgary. Bad gun snap on the 2 yard line cost them a TD last night. Costly penalties & turnovers. The Cats have a suicide tendency to do stupid things at critical times. Is that just bad luck or do some players have character issues that Austin has to weed out? This is happening too much for it just to be a coincidence or an isolated event. Some players choke under pressure. I don't think it's luck as much as it's being 'almost' good enough to win coupled with losing their first string QB and 3 starting O lineman plus others. LeFevour is getting better each game out, but that O line is still a big stinking pile. Hamilton is taking a bunch of dumb penalties. Some of that's on the coaching staff. Some on the players. Some on trying to do a little too much like getting one extra hit in. Some on backups getting beat and having to grab to survive. As the games are really close these mistakes are magnified much like the last couple of years in Bomberland. -
